Among the forms of permissible pleasures are:

The pleasure of eating and drinking.

The pleasure of intimacy.

The pleasure of happiness in achieving one's goals.

The pleasure of well-being.

The pleasure of companionship with others.

The pleasure of looking at beautiful things, and so on.

What is observed regarding these pleasures

is that man wants to reach their perfection and attain their ultimate end.

He desires their continuity and that they do not depart.

And who among us does not love the permanence of enjoyment and reaching its utmost limit?

But can a person reach the permanence of pleasure and attain its ultimate end?

The answer is that this is a goal that cannot be attained,

and a wish that cannot be reached in this abode.

For this worldly life is not the abode of eternity and recompense.

It is merely a passage to the everlasting abode,

and a sample of what is to come therein.

And a sample or a specimen does not contain everything.

Let it not deceive you after long experiences;

The world entices with its connection, yet it will be severed.

Like dreams of sleep or a vanishing shadow,

the intelligent person is not deceived by such things.

Therefore, the world was fashioned with hardships,

so that man does not rely upon it and forget Paradise and the meeting with Allah the Exalted.

Among what the hand of hardship touches in this world

are the pleasures within it.

Pleasures in this world are tainted in three ways:

Before obtaining them, during them, and after them.

For a person does not attain them except after fatigue or the pain of needing them.

Once he reaches them, they are accompanied by some annoyances,

such as their failure to fulfill everything he desires in terms of suitability.

And as for the portion of enjoyment,

that feeling does not last for him.

Rather, he begins to feel boredom and a desire to move on to a new pleasure.

This is why some people live in grief and repression,

when not everything they want regarding pleasure is realized for them.

And do not look forward in this world to reaching its perfection.

For if a person were to keep searching for perfection in this pursuit,

he would be like the thirsty one who drinks from sea water;

You must be content with the lawful,

and do not seek enjoyment in the forbidden.

For forbidden pleasure is a disaster in this world and the Hereafter.

So if your soul longs for a pleasure that is forbidden,

then promise yourself the attainment of its lawful equivalent in Paradise.

Al-Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

"The believer is suddenly confronted by something that pleases him;

he says, 'By Allah, I desire you, and you are indeed among my needs,

but by Allah, there is no way to reach you.'

Far be it; a barrier has been placed between me and you."

Thirdly, let religion and reason be the guide for the pleasure you seek.

For religion defines for you the correct path to pleasure,

and sound reason chooses for you the appropriate place and time for it.

It may even advise you to stay away from it entirely.

Fourthly, there is a pleasure whose path few humans follow,

and even fewer reach its ultimate end.

This pleasure is the experience of the taste of acts of worship and feeling their sweetness and suitability.

So drink deeply from this pleasure, and you will find rest.

"Poor are the people of this world;

they left the world without having tasted the best thing in it."

It was asked, "And what is the best thing in it?"

abundant, not scarce;

and diverse, not limited.

So prepare yourself with a sincere preparation to reach that.
