0:02 The breeze of dawn.

0:08 Raise your hands and receive glad tidings.

0:14 Perhaps times pass you by when the earth, for all its vastness, feels narrow.

0:20 When the doors to your needs are closed, despite their breadth.

0:25 And you find yourself in severe distress and prolonged sorrow.

0:29 You look to your right,

0:31 And see only closed paths.

0:35 You look to your left,

0:37 And see only impenetrable barriers.

0:41 You look before you,

0:43 And see only the mazes of helplessness swirling before your eyes.

0:49 You search the corners of life for a hand to reach out to you,

0:55 To rescue you from the depths of your sorrows,

0:58 And take you to the shores of your aspirations.

1:03 Yet you continue to cry out and cry out,

1:06 Waving your hands to the right and the left,

1:10 Hoping a compassionate eye might see you and come to your aid.

1:15 But you do not find what you seek.

1:20 Yet I reproach you, my companion in life, for this action you have taken,

1:26 Having found that it failed to meet your needs.

1:30 Why were you content to look in all four directions,

1:34 And did not look upward?

1:37 Why did you extend your hands to this person and that,

1:41 Convincing yourself that they held the fulfillment of your request?

1:45 Would it not have been more fitting for you to raise your head to the heavens,

1:51 And extend your hands, calling upon the Lord of the worlds?

1:55 In Him, you find healing for your illness,

1:59 Sufficiency for your poverty,

2:02 Happiness in your time of sorrow,

2:05 Relief in your time of distress,

2:08 Strength to sustain you in your weakness,

2:11 And power to rescue you in your hour of helplessness.

2:15 You find with Allah, my friend, joy in the persistence of those who call upon Him,

2:20 A love for the supplication of the humble,

2:24 And haste in answering the prayers of the distressed.

2:28 “Is not He (best) Who answereth the wronged one when he crieth unto Him and removeth the evil, and hath made you viceroys of the earth? Is there any Allah beside Allah? Little do they reflect!” (27:62)

2:34 And a generosity that is not diminished by the giving to those who ask.

2:39 O My servants,

2:41 If the first of you and the last of you,

2:44 And your humans and your jinn,

2:46 Were to stand in one place and ask of Me,

2:50 And I were to give every person what they asked for,

2:54 That would not decrease what I have,

2:57 Any more than a needle decreases the sea when it is dipped into it.

3:02 Indeed, supplication is a great door among the doors of happiness,

3:06 Of uncovering distress and grief,

3:09 Of bringing down security in times of fear,

3:13 Of well-being in times of illness,

3:16 Of tranquility in times of anxiety,

3:19 And of salvation in the jaws of destruction.

3:22 It is the Sunnah of the prophets and the righteous servants of Allah,

3:26 During the intensification of trials.

3:29 The Qur'an has recorded salvation through supplication,

3:32 Regarding His prophets, peace be upon them.

3:35 Through it, Nuh was saved from killing and drowning,

3:39 Ayyub was healed from his illness,

3:42 Yunus emerged from the three darknesses,

3:47 And Zakariyya was granted a child after barrenness.

3:51 As for our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:56 How often he supplicated, how often he taught the Ummah to supplicate,

4:00 And urged them toward it.

4:03 On the authority of Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

4:06 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

4:09 "No servant ever says,

4:12 When struck by anxiety or sorrow:

4:15 'O Allah, I am Your servant, son of Your servant, son of Your maidservant,

4:19 My forelock is in Your hand,

4:22 Your command over me is ever executed,

4:25 Your decree over me is just,

4:28 I ask You by every name that is Yours,

4:31 By which You have named Yourself,

4:34 Or revealed in Your Book,

4:37 Or taught to any of Your creation,

4:40 Or kept hidden in the knowledge of the unseen with You,

4:43 That You make the Qur'an the spring of my heart,

4:47 The light of my chest, the remover of my sorrow,

4:49 And the departure of my anxiety,'

4:52 But that Allah will remove his anxiety,

4:55 And replace his sorrow with joy."

4:59 They asked, "O Messenger of Allah,

5:02 Should we not learn these words?"

5:05 He said, "Yes,

5:08 It is fitting for anyone who hears them to learn them."

5:11 And the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said

5:14 To Mu'adh Ibn Jabal, may Allah be pleased with him:

5:17 "Shall I not teach you a supplication to call upon,

5:20 That even if you had a debt like a mountain,

5:23 Allah would pay it off for you?

5:26 Say, O Mu'adh:

5:30 'O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty,

5:33 “Say: O Allah! Owner of Sovereignty! Thou givest sovereignty unto whom Thou wilt, and Thou withdrawest sovereignty from whom Thou wilt. Thou exaltest whom Thou wilt, and Thou abasest whom Thou wilt. In Thy hand is the good. Lo! Thou art Able to do all things.” (3:26)

5:36 You give sovereignty to whom You will, and You take sovereignty away from whom You will,

5:39 “Say: O Allah! Owner of Sovereignty! Thou givest sovereignty unto whom Thou wilt, and Thou withdrawest sovereignty from whom Thou wilt. Thou exaltest whom Thou wilt, and Thou abasest whom Thou wilt. In Thy hand is the good. Lo! Thou art Able to do all things.” (3:26)

5:42 In Your hand is all good,

5:44 Indeed, You are over all things competent.

5:47 The Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter,

5:50 You give them to whom You will,

5:53 And withhold them from whom You will,

5:56 Grant me mercy that will make me independent of,

5:59 Any mercy from anyone else.'"

6:03 Muhammad Ibn 'Ali passed by Muhammad Ibn al-Munkadir,

6:06 And said,

6:09 "Why do I see you looking sorrowful?"

6:13 He replied, "It is because of a debt that has burdened me,"

6:16 Meaning it has weighed heavily upon him.

6:18 Muhammad Ibn 'Ali said,

6:20 "Open for yourself the door of supplication."

6:23 He said, "Yes."

6:24 Then he said,

6:26 "A servant is blessed in a need,

6:29 When he persists in supplicating to his Lord regarding it,

6:31 Whatever that need may be."

6:35 So, O you who seek a goal,

6:38 Filled with anxiety and distress,

6:41 Persist in supplication,

6:43 Until it is opened for you.

6:45 And when it is opened for you,

6:47 You will see a lush garden,

6:49 Of happiness and tranquility.

6:52 Its beauty will make you forget the images of adversity,

6:55 Its fragrant scent will dispel,

6:58 The odors of sorrow,

7:00 And the touch of its blossoms will soften,

7:03 The touch of pains and aches.

7:06 So take refuge in supplication,

7:08 And do not take refuge in anything else.

7:10 Your supplications will embrace the pillars of the heavens,

7:13 And Allah will reach you with His bounty and His goodness.

7:17 We have experienced the ages and their turns,

7:22 And passed through the aftermath of hardships and ease.

7:26 We did not grieve for a world that passed away,

7:29 And we did not take refuge in anything but supplication.
