0:13 In the pre-dawn hours lies a secret known only to the sincere lovers of Allah.

0:18 Those to whom it was revealed through their long standing in that beautiful time.

0:24 Until they began to steal away from themselves in the deep silence of the night.

0:29 While life has cast its deep slumber upon the living.

0:34 So that the night might disclose to them a new facet of that hidden secret.

0:40 The atmosphere at that time is draped in a garment of tranquility.

0:45 And far from the jostling crowds and preoccupations.

0:50 Truly, those who prostrate and supplicate in the pre-dawn hours have tasted.

0:54 The delight of happiness, which those who turn away from these sacred moments are deprived of.

1:00 They have tasted the sweetness of comfort.

1:03 Until their hearts were calmed and their breasts expanded.

1:07 The calamities of their worldly life became light for them.

1:11 And their pains became easy to bear.

1:14 They have been quenched by the nectar of happiness in the depth of the pre-dawn hours through two paths.

1:22 The first path:

1:24 What is found in those moments filled with prayer and intimate conversation with Allah.

1:29 Of comfort and delight.

1:31 Which Allah the Exalted bestows upon those who abandon the desire for sleep.

1:36 And stand before their Lord, bowing and prostrating.

1:41 The second path:

1:43 Allah’s response to the supplication of those who stand in the pre-dawn hours.

1:47 As for the first path:

1:50 Whoever struggles against his own self to persist in worship during that blessed hour.

1:57 And performs his standing there before Allah well.

2:00 Then Allah clothes his heart in a fabric of happiness that surpasses description in beauty and endurance.

2:08 This is because he preferred what Allah loves over what his own self loves.

2:13 Thus, that delight he attains is his immediate reward.

2:19 Allah the Exalted says:

2:22 “Only those believe in Our revelations who, when they are reminded of them, fall down prostrate and hymn the praise of their Lord, and they are not scornful,” (32:15)

2:28 “Only those believe in Our revelations who, when they are reminded of them, fall down prostrate and hymn the praise of their Lord, and they are not scornful,” (32:15)

2:37 “Who forsake their beds to cry unto their Lord in fear and hope, and spend of that We have bestowed on them.” (32:16)

2:49 ﴾And from what We have provided them, they spend.﴿

2:54 ﴾No soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes as reward for what they used to do.﴿

3:10 The righteous have spoken about this.

3:15 Abu Sulayman al-Darani said: "The people of the night find more pleasure in their night than the people of amusement find in their amusement."

3:24 "Were it not for the night, I would not love to remain in this world."

3:29 He also said: "If Allah were to compensate the people of the night for the reward of their deeds with the delight they find,"

3:39 "That would be more than the reward of their deeds."

3:45 Some scholars said: "There is no time in this world that resembles the bliss of the people of Paradise,"

3:52 "Except for the sweetness of intimate conversation that the devoted find in their hearts at night."

3:59 Some of them said: "The delight of intimate conversation is not of this world; rather, it is from Paradise."

4:08 "Allah the Exalted revealed it to His close friends, and no one else finds it."

4:13 Ibn al-Munkadir said: "Nothing remains of the delights of this world except three: standing in prayer at night,"

4:22 "Meeting brothers, and praying in congregation."

4:27 Sufyan said: "When the night comes, I rejoice, and when the day comes, I grieve."

4:36 Thabit al-Bunani said: "There is nothing I find in my heart,"

4:42 "More delightful to me than standing in prayer at night."

4:45 For there is nothing more delightful to the lovers than the times of seclusion in intimate conversation with their Beloved.

4:53 Who is the healing of their hearts and the ultimate end of their desires.

4:58 As for the second path, the hour of the pre-dawn is an hour for the answering of supplications.

5:06 There is no doubt that its people call upon Allah the Exalted therein with many supplications.

5:13 Among them is the supplication for the relief of their distress and the removal of their worries and sorrows.

5:20 Perhaps Allah will answer their supplication, and thus they become happy.

5:27 It is also an hour of nearness to Allah.

5:31 Whoever is near to Allah, He answers his supplication.

5:37 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

5:41 "Our Lord, Blessed and Exalted is He, descends every night to the lowest heaven,"

5:48 "When the last third of the night remains."

5:51 "He says: 'Who is calling upon Me, that I may answer him?'"

5:56 "'Who is asking Me, that I may give him?'"

6:00 "'Who is seeking My forgiveness, that I may forgive him?'"

6:04 And he, peace be upon him, said:

6:07 "The closest the Lord is to the servant is in the depth of the latter part of the night."

6:13 So if you are able to be among those who remember Allah at that hour, then be so.

6:21 So, O you who are surrounded by sorrows and hardships,

6:25 And bound by pains and vexations,

6:29 Whose life has become constricted,

6:33 Whose delights have become clouded,

6:36 Who has been cut off from his hopes,

6:38 And has fallen short of reaching his goal:

6:41 Be among the people of the pre-dawn, standing and supplicating.

6:45 Increase your connection to those sweet moments.

6:49 And persist in standing well during them.

6:53 You will find that joys will pour upon you in abundance.

6:58 That pains will lighten,

7:01 And sorrows will depart.

7:06 Once you have become one of the people of worship in the hour of the pre-dawn,

7:10 Beware of cutting yourself off from that while you are able.

7:15 For cutting it off breeds gloom,

7:18 And deprives one of happiness.

7:20 Ibn Rajab said:

7:22 A scholar used to stand in prayer at the pre-dawn.

7:25 He slept through it for several nights.

7:28 He saw in his dream two men standing over him.

7:32 One of them said to the other:

7:35 "This man used to be among those who seek forgiveness at the pre-dawn hours,"

7:40 "But he has abandoned that."

7:42 O you who once had a heart, but it has turned away.

7:46 O you who once had a time with Allah, but it has gone.

7:51 The standing of the pre-dawn feels lonely for you.

7:54 The fasting of the day asks about you.

7:57 The nights of connection reproach you:

8:01 "You have changed toward us by keeping company with others,"

8:06 "And you have shown abandonment; we were not like this."

8:10 "You swore that you would not turn away from this love,"

8:14 "Yet you turned away from the old covenant, while we have not."

8:19 "Nights when we used to drink from your connection,"

8:23 "And my heart has yearned for those nights."

8:33 The happiness of humanity.
