Thus we established Joseph in the land that We might teach him the interpretation of events. And Allah was predominant in His career, but most of mankind know not.” (12:21)

Death is among the things Allah the Exalted has decreed for His servants.

So when one completes their appointed time,

And has received their full provision,

The messenger of death descends upon them,

And drives them to the abode of the Hereafter.

“But Allah reprieveth no soul when its term cometh, and Allah is Informed of what ye do.” (63:11)

And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.

As for this life,

We were not born into it

Except to depart from it through death.

And our days in it do not increase

Without our share of it decreasing.

How wondrous is this life!

Everything it has given us, it has taken away.

Everything we have added to it, we have lost.

And everything it has brought together, it has scattered.

Many a person is honored in it in the morning,

Only to be mourned by evening.

I offer you condolences, not because I am certain

Of immortality, but because it is the way of the faith.

For the one offering condolences will not remain after the deceased,

Nor will the one being consoled, even if they live for a while.

Death comes in this life to all its inhabitants;

It does not distinguish between young and old,

The commanded and the commander,

The beloved and the despised,

The righteous and the wicked,

Or the one who desires death and the one who fears it.

Whoever the arrow of fate misses today,

Will be struck by it tomorrow.

When a son of ‘Umar ibn ‘Abd al-‘Aziz died,

‘Umar addressed the people and said:

"Praise be to Allah, who has made death inevitable,

A duty upon His servants,

Making the strong and the weak equal in it,

As well as the noble and the lowly."

﴾Every soul shall taste death.﴿

So let those of understanding among them know

That they are heading toward their graves,

Alone with their deeds.

My Muslim brother,

A person is happy living with those they love,

Tasting joy in their presence,

And seeing delight in their remaining.

Then death descends,

And takes the soul of a child from their parents,

Or a mother or a father

From among their children,

Or a spouse from their spouse,

Or a relative from their relative,
3:14
Or a beloved from their beloved.

And there, upon the heart of the afflicted lover, descends

The intensity of sorrows,

Making their world narrow after it had been vast,

And dark before them after it had been bright,

And clouding its purity

After it had been clear.

In this state, we say:

O you who are afflicted by the loss of a loved one or relative,

Do not occupy your heart with grief for what has passed,

But occupy it with preparation for what is to come.

Know that your love for the departed

Will not keep them with you,

That your grief for them will not bring them back to you,

And that your constant tears will not water them with the water of life

So that they may return to it anew.

You know that you are not the only lover

Whose beloved has departed due to the arrival of their appointed time.

How many people do you know who have parted from those they love

In circumstances they were deeply attached to?

How many did our Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, lose

During his life among his relatives and loved ones?

His mother died when he was six years old,

And his compassionate grandfather, ‘Abd al-Muttalib, died

When he was eight years old.

His loyal wife died,
4:45
And his merciful uncle, Abu Talib,
4:48
In the same year.

All his sons and daughters died during his lifetime,

Except for Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her.

He was grieved by the killing of his uncle Hamzah and his companions at Uhud,

And he was also grieved by the people of al-Raji‘ and Bi’r Ma‘unah.

Yet with all these sorrows,

The world remained bright before the eyes of the Messenger of Allah,

With his optimistic outlook upon it,

And his soul content with the decree of Allah upon him.

Yes, he wept for days,

And there is no blame in tears.

Indeed, he said after the death of his son Ibrahim:

"The eye weeps and the heart grieves,

And we say nothing except what pleases our Lord,
5:41
And we are indeed saddened by your departure, O Ibrahim."

Those tears fell,

And they extinguished the blaze of the aching heart.

Perhaps the shedding of tears follows with relief

From anguish, or heals the sorrow of the distressed.

So let your affliction over the death of a believing loved one be light upon you,

For what is with Allah is better for them than what you have.

And perhaps the reward you have for seeking the reward of Allah in your affliction

Is what will console you in your calamity.

So why should your grief and distress be prolonged?

And if your affliction is the death of a child,

Do not let your sorrow extend,

For they are heading to Paradise,

And will be an intercessor for their parents on the Day of Resurrection.

It is enough that they have rested from the toil and burdens of this world.

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

"When the child of a servant dies,

Allah says to His angels:

'Have you taken the child of My servant?'

They say: 'Yes.'

'Have you taken the fruit of his heart?'

They say: 'Yes.'

'What did My servant say?'

'He praised You and said: To Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.'

'Build for My servant a house in Paradise,

And name it the House of Praise.'"

A Bedouin fell ill and it was said to him:

"Where am I being taken?"

"Then why would I dislike going to the One from whom no good is seen

For it will ease with the passing of time.

So seek help in reaching solace

Through the vehicle of beautiful patience,

Reflecting on the abundant reward,

And contemplating the lack of benefit in prolonged grief.

You were possessive of the one you were afflicted by,

But you found solace when time passed.

And the best of your fortune in calamity is
8:17
That patience meets you when it descends.
