0:10 “O ‘A’ishah, they are those who pray, give charity, and whose hearts are fearful.”
0:20 In these blessed days, people turn toward acts of obedience and increase in them.
0:27 This is part of Allah’s grace upon the people.
0:30 It is also due to what Allah has specifically favored this virtuous month with,
0:33 such as the chaining of the devils, the closing of the gates of Hell, and the opening of the gates of Paradise.
0:40 As people turn toward various forms of obedience,
0:44 such as prayers, charity, and the recitation of the Qur’an,
0:48 you find them also supplicating, asking Allah to accept these deeds from them.

0:59 Allah the Exalted said:
1:01 “Lo! those who go in awe for fear of their Lord.” (23:57)
1:08 “And those who believe in the revelations of their Lord,” (23:58)
1:14 “And those who ascribe not partners unto their Lord,” (23:59)
1:19 “And those who give that which they give with hearts afraid because they are about to return unto their Lord,” (23:60)
1:27 “And those who give that which they give with hearts afraid because they are about to return unto their Lord,” (23:60)
1:32 “These race for the good things, and they shall win them in the race.” (23:61)
1:40 When ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, read this verse,
1:45 she thought it referred to the disobedient.
1:49 So she asked the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about the verse.
1:53 She said, “O Messenger of Allah,
1:56 “And those who give that which they give with hearts afraid because they are about to return unto their Lord,” (23:60)
2:00 are they those who commit errors and perform sins?”
2:04 He replied, “No, O ‘A’ishah.
2:08 They are those who pray, give charity, and whose hearts are fearful.”
2:13 Narrated by al-Tabarani in al-Awsat.
2:16 Ibn Kathir, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
2:19 “They give their charity
2:21 while fearing that it will not be accepted from them,
2:24 because of their fear that they may have fallen short in fulfilling
2:27 the conditions of giving.”
2:29 This is a matter of compassion and caution.
2:33 The people of faith perform righteous deeds,
2:36 yet they fear that their deeds will not be accepted
2:39 due to their shortcomings or a lack of sincerity.
2:43 Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
2:46 “The fear of those among the salaf who feared
2:48 that their deeds would not be accepted
2:50 stemmed from their fear that they had not performed the deed
2:53 in the manner commanded.”
2:55 Al-Hasan al-Basri said:
2:57 “By Allah, they performed acts of obedience
2:59 and strove in them,
3:01 yet they feared that they would be rejected.”
3:04 Indeed, the believer combines excellence with fear,
3:07 while the hypocrite combines wrongdoing with a sense of security.
3:11 Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
3:14 “Allah the Exalted described the people of felicity
3:17 as having excellence coupled with fear,
3:19 and described the wretched as having wrongdoing coupled with a sense of security.”
3:23 This fear of the non-acceptance of deeds
3:26 led them to hasten toward good works,
3:29 just as Allah the Almighty described them.
3:32 “These race for the good things, and they shall win them in the race.” (23:61)
3:35 Al-Sa‘di, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
3:38 “Meaning, in the arena of hastening toward acts of goodness,
3:41 their concern is what draws them closer to Allah,
3:44 and their intent is directed toward what saves them from His punishment.”
3:48 So, every good deed they heard of,
3:51 or for which an opportunity arose,
3:53 they seized it and hastened to perform it.
3:57 This fear is praiseworthy,
3:59 because it led them to hasten toward good works.
4:02 Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
4:05 “His fear of falling short in obedience
4:08 is a sign of the perfection of his obedience.”
4:10 This instruction from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
4:14 to ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,
4:17 left its mark on her life
4:20 and on her hastening toward good works.
4:23 Whoever enjoys reading her fragrant biography
4:26 will find confirmation of this in many examples from her life.
4:31 Indeed, she said at the time of her death, out of the intensity of her fear:
4:35 “I wish I were a thing forgotten and out of sight.”

5:15 We love ‘A’ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, we pray for her, and we name our daughters after her.
5:23 We ask Allah to grant us fear of Him in private and in public,
5:27 and to make us among those who hasten toward good works and are foremost in them.
5:33 We shall continue in a future meeting, if Allah wills, and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
