0:00 Our mother 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

0:10 "O 'A'ishah, you will either tell me, or the Subtle, the All-Aware will inform me."

0:16 Allah created woman,

0:21 and He clarified for us the nature of the relationship that exists between her and man.

0:26 He, Glorified and Exalted, said:

0:28 “He it is Who did create you from a single soul, and therefrom did make his mate that he might take rest in her. And when he covered her she bore a light burden, and she passed (unnoticed) with it, but when it became heavy they cried unto Allah, their Lord, saying: If thou givest unto us aright we shall be of the thankful.” (7:189)

0:34 “He it is Who did create you from a single soul, and therefrom did make his mate that he might take rest in her. 1:00 ◁ Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought. ▷

1:08 These verses indicate that it is the man who finds tranquility in the woman,

1:13 and not the other way around.

1:14 This is because the man is constantly engaged in active movement outside the home,

1:18 so he retreats to the home for tranquility,

1:21 and woman is his sanctuary of repose.

1:23 Woman, on the other hand, is ordained to remain settled within the home;

1:26 she is grounded within it, not constantly in motion outside.

1:30 Thus, venturing outside the home was an exceptional occurrence for her,

1:35 not a fundamental duty to adhere to,

1:37 let alone a right she actively demands.

1:41 Therefore, she does not seek tranquility in the man;

1:43 rather, it is he who finds tranquility in her.

1:47 Nothing appears in the Qur'an suggesting that a woman finds tranquility in a man;

1:52 rather, what is stated is that the man finds tranquility in her.

1:57 For a man to truly attain this tranquility with his wife,

2:00 he must comprehend an unchanging truth that neither fades with time

2:05 nor alters with civilizational advancement:

2:08 the nature of woman is inherently different from that of man.

2:12 Allah Almighty said:

2:14 ◁ And the male is not like the female. ▷

2:17 If a man misunderstands this reality,

2:20 he will live a life of misery.

2:23 It is of a woman's inherent nature

2:25 that she will never remain consistently on one straight path for a man.

2:29 Her shortcomings are prone to recur,

2:32 even if a man teaches and guides her repeatedly.

2:35 For this reason, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

2:39 "Indeed, woman was created from a rib;

2:42 she will never remain straight for you on any single path.

2:45 If you wish to enjoy her companionship,

2:47 you will do so while her crookedness remains in her.

2:50 But if you attempt to straighten her, you will break her;

2:52 and breaking her is divorcing her."

2:57 If a woman does not remain on one consistent path for a man,

3:02 what then is the optimal approach in dealing with her?

3:06 The optimal approach in dealing with a woman

3:09 is that which the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) guided us toward,

3:13 through both his words and his actions.

3:15 Whoever wishes to excel in dealing with his wife

3:18 must study the biography of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

3:23 with his wives,

3:24 and observe how he treated them.

3:27 An example of this is

3:28 his statement (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):

3:31 "Indeed, woman was created from a rib,

3:34 and if you attempt to straighten the rib, you will break it.

3:38 So treat her with gentle forbearance, and you will live comfortably with her."

3:40 Recorded by Ahmad.

3:42 Thus, the Prophet (peace be upon him) guided

3:44 toward practicing gentle diplomacy and forbearance (mudarah) with woman,

3:47 so that marital life may endure.

3:50 This gentle forbearance

3:51 means that a man treats his wife with kindness until he brings her back to what is right,

3:56 or steers her away from falsehood using the best possible means.

4:00 Among the practical examples from the life of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

4:04 with his wives

4:06 is this beautiful narration,

4:08 which reveals the exceptional beauty of the Prophet's character

4:13 in dealing with his wives

4:15 and exercising gentle forbearance toward them,

4:17 even when their missteps recurred out of jealousy.

4:21 Here is the account:

4:23 On the authority of Muhammad ibn Qays ibn Makhramah ibn al-Muttalib,

4:27 who said one day:

4:29 "Shall I not narrate to you concerning myself and my mother?"

4:32 The narrator said:

4:33 "We assumed he meant his biological mother."

4:37 He continued:

4:38 "'A'ishah said:

4:40 'Shall I not narrate to you concerning myself and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)?'

4:45 We said: 'Yes, indeed.'

4:47 He said:

4:48 "She said:

4:49 'When it was my night that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) spent with me,

4:55 he turned, took off his cloak, and removed his sandals,

4:59 placing them by his feet.

5:02 He spread the edge of his lower garment over his bed

5:05 and lay down.

5:06 He waited only until he thought I had fallen asleep,

5:11 then he took his cloak softly,

5:13 put on his sandals softly,

5:15 opened the door, slipped out,

5:17 and shut it softly behind him.

5:20 I pulled my shift over my head, veiled myself,

5:23 wrapped my lower garment around me,

5:25 and set out following in his footsteps,

5:27 until he arrived at al-Baqi' and stood there.

5:30 He remained standing for a long time,

5:32 then raised his hands three times,

5:35 and then turned back.

5:36 So I turned back.

5:37 He quickened his pace,

5:38 so I quickened mine.

5:40 He jogged,

5:41 so I jogged.

5:42 He ran,

5:43 so I ran.

5:44 I outpaced him, entered the house,

5:46 and had barely lain down

5:49 when he entered.

5:50 He said:

5:51 "What is the matter with you, O 'A'ish?

5:53 Why are you out of breath and heaving?"

5:55 She said:

5:56 'I replied: "Nothing."'

5:58 He said:

5:59 "You will either tell me,

6:00 or the Subtle, the All-Aware will inform me."

6:04 She said:

6:05 'I said: "O Messenger of Allah,

6:07 may my father and mother be ransomed for you!"

6:09 and so I told him.'

6:10 He said:

6:11 "So you were the dark figure I saw ahead of me?"

6:14 I said: 'Yes.'

6:16 He nudged me firmly on the chest, giving me a shove that pained me,

6:20 then said:

6:21 "Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would act unjustly toward you?"

6:25 She said:

6:26 'Whatever people conceal, Allah knows it.

6:29 Yes.'

6:31 He said:

6:32 "Gabriel came to me when you saw me slip out,

6:35 and he called me softly, concealing it from you,

6:38 so I answered him softly, concealing it from you.

6:41 He would not enter upon you while you were undressed,

6:45 and I thought that you had already fallen asleep.

6:47 I disliked waking you,

6:49 and I feared that you would feel frightened being left alone.

6:52 Gabriel said:

6:53 'Your Lord commands you to go to the dwellers of al-Baqi' and seek forgiveness for them.'

6:58 She said:

6:59 'I asked:

7:00 "What should I say to them, O Messenger of Allah?"

7:03 He said:

7:04 "Say:

7:06 'Peace be upon the inhabitants of these dwellings from among the believers and the Muslims.

7:10 May Allah have mercy upon those of us who have gone before and those who come later,

7:15 and we shall, if Allah wills, join you.'"'"

7:19 Recorded by Muslim.

7:21 This narration offers several valuable reflections.

7:24 The first:

7:25 this is one of the accounts showcasing the jealousy of 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.

7:30 We notice that it resembles the account we mentioned in the previous article,

7:36 where she missed him in bed at night,

7:39 went looking for him,

7:41 assuming that he had gone to one of his other wives,

7:45 only to discover otherwise.

7:48 Yet the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) patiently repeated the same guidance to her;

7:53 he did not say to her: "We have already taught you this before,

7:57 so why do you repeat this mistake?"

8:00 That is because he (peace be upon him)

8:02 knew that a woman will never remain on a single, perfectly straight path for a man,

8:08 and that mistakes will inevitably recur on her part.

8:11 In this lies a profound lesson for all men in how they should treat their wives,

8:17 especially when they repeat a mistake.

8:20 The second reflection:

8:22 this story vividly highlights the noble character of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with his wives,

8:28 and his keen concern for their comfort.

8:31 He slipped out in complete silence so as not to wake 'A'ishah,

8:36 nor leave her feeling frightened sitting alone at night.

8:39 This reflects his noble character and profound mercy (peace be upon him),

8:44 offering another lesson for men in being mindful of their wives' comfort.

8:50 The third reflection:

8:51 jealousy caused 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

8:55 to overlook these noble considerations

8:59 that the Prophet (peace be upon him) displayed.

9:03 Rather, jealousy led her not to interpret his actions

9:08 in the best possible light;

9:11 instead, she interpreted them in the worst possible way,

9:14 believing he had gone to another of his wives on her allocated night—

9:19 an act of injustice toward a wife had he done so.

9:23 For this reason, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said to her:

9:27 "Did you think that Allah and His Messenger would act unjustly toward you?"

9:31 Meaning: that Allah and His Messenger would wrong you?

9:34 'A'ishah admitted to him that this was indeed the suspicion that crossed her mind,

9:40 saying:

9:42 "Whatever people conceal, Allah knows it.

9:45 Yes."

9:46 Jealousy does not justify a wife harboring ill assumptions about her husband,

9:51 which is why the Prophet (peace be upon him) rebuked her suspicion.

9:56 The fourth reflection:

9:58 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her,

10:01 realized that the Prophet (peace be upon him) was heading to al-Baqi' to pray for the deceased;

10:07 nevertheless, she kept watching him and did not return home,

10:12 nor did his departure put her at ease,

10:14 even though the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood praying for an extended time.

10:20 All of this was driven by jealousy,

10:22 which strips away sound reasoning when responding to events.

10:27 Fifth:

10:29 Whatever ill suspicions a wife hides concerning her husband may remain concealed from him,

10:34 but they are never hidden from Allah.

10:37 Therefore, a woman must constantly bear in mind this reality stated by 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):

10:45 "Whatever people conceal, Allah knows it."

10:49 Sixth:

10:50 A wrongful deed committed by either a husband or a wife

10:53 may leave telltale signs that reveal it,

10:57 just as happened with 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) when her heavy breathing gave her away.

11:02 For the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to her:

11:05 "What is the matter, O 'A'ish, panting with your chest heaving?"

11:09 She replied, "It is nothing."

11:12 He said, "You must tell me, or the Subtle and All-Aware will inform me."

11:17 Indeed, 'A'ishah was gasping for breath,

11:21 her stomach rising and falling from her rapid breathing,

11:25 because she had been running fast

11:28 to reach home before the Prophet (peace be upon him).

11:33 The Prophet (peace be upon him) had left her

11:36 believing she was fast asleep,

11:39 and in such a state, one is expected

11:41 to be in the utmost tranquility and rest.

11:44 Thus, this physical sign exposed her jealousy

11:49 and the resulting act of following the Prophet (peace be upon him).

11:55 So, O Muslim woman,

11:57 beware of the consequences of your jealousy

12:00 if it is not governed by the limits of the Shariah,

12:03 for it can lead you to ruin

12:05 through groundless suspicions and unseemly actions.

12:10 We shall continue in a future gathering, if Allah wills.

12:13 And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
