0:27 Everyone who obeys the Lord dissolves into the sweetest feeling.

0:34 The matter is one of refinement.

0:37 I am not speaking of refinement in terms of food and drink.

0:43 Although refinement is a beautiful word,

0:46 It carries within it the meaning of gentleness,

0:49 Good companionship, and proper conduct,

0:52 Avoiding embarrassment and the wounding of people’s feelings,

0:56 Through hurtful words, gestures, or the like.

0:59 People have come to recognize,

1:01 And it has become a matter of custom among them,

1:03 That when they wish to praise someone, they say,

1:07 "So-and-so has refinement,"

1:09 Or, "He is a person of refinement."

1:11 And when they wish to disparage him, they say,

1:14 "So-and-so lacks refinement,"

1:16 Or, "He has no refinement."

1:18 And so it goes.

1:20 Refinement, in this sense,

1:22 Pertains more to the abstract than to the sensory.

1:26 The seat of refinement in the abstract

1:28 Revolves around the intellect, the soul, and the heart.

1:31 While its seat in the sensory realm

1:34 Does not extend beyond the tongue.

1:36 Islam has encouraged the human being to possess refinement.

1:40 Even though refinement is supposed to come naturally from a person without prompting.

1:45 Nevertheless,

1:47 Islam encouraged the Muslim, when coming to prayer,

1:50 To be in a state of purity,

1:52 To adorn himself at every mosque,

1:55 To arrive with tranquility and dignity,

1:58 To lower his voice while communing with his Lord,

2:02 And not to come to the mosque having eaten garlic, onions, or the like,

2:07 Which might cause discomfort to the worshippers.

2:10 Here, the matter is one of refinement.

2:12 Islam calls for this.

2:15 Is it not part of the etiquette of zakat

2:17 That it be given to the poor in secret,

2:19 So as not to embarrass the needy?

2:21 Truly, the matter is one of refinement.

2:24 Were not the pilgrims commanded to maintain tranquility and avoid harming their brothers?

2:29 Is fasting not among the greatest things that refine the senses,

2:32 Elevate one's taste, and uplift the soul?

2:35 Does it not involve empathy for others,

2:38 And a sense of what they suffer from the deprivation of poverty and the humiliation of need?

2:42 You find this refinement in acts of worship.

2:45 Likewise, regarding prohibitions and forbidden acts,

2:48 You find warnings against a lack of refinement,

2:51 Or the weakening of its aspect.

2:53 Among the signs of a person’s happiness

2:56 Is to be blessed with a sound, refined taste.

2:59 For if he is such,

3:01 He knows how to enjoy life,

3:04 How to respect the feelings of others,

3:07 And how to bring joy to them.

3:09 The person of sound refinement

3:12 Is capable of drawing people toward him.

3:15 Indeed, sound refinement in a person

3:17 Elevates him to the point of choosing gentle words,

3:21 And appropriate conduct that prevents embarrassment.

3:25 Moreover, the person of sound refinement

3:27 Shuns conflict and intense anger.

3:30 So reflect upon that.

3:32 For the matter is one of refinement,

3:34 Nothing more and nothing less.

3:49 Strive so that joy may embrace you.

3:53 Attach your soul to your Lord,

3:58 And fill the surroundings with light.

4:01 Amazing!

4:02 For the one who obeys the Lord,

4:05 Dissolves into the sweetest feeling.

4:09 Darkness, then light,

4:14 And life after terror.

4:18 ﴾When Allah wills a thing, He says to it, "Be," and it is.﴿
