0:37 I do not know why some insist on clinging to the past,
0:44 And persist in weeping over what has already transpired,
0:48 And dwelling in prolonged sorrow over the griefs and pains that occurred therein.
0:53 Why, then, this attachment to what has elapsed and vanished?
0:57 Is it rational for a person to remain imprisoned in the cell of the past,
1:02 Forgetting the freedom of the present and the future?
1:05 Islam always calls upon the Muslim to look forward, toward the Hereafter.
1:12 For what has passed is finished,
1:15 Serving only as a lesson and a warning.
1:18 The door to the past must be bolted shut, never to see the light,
1:22 Because it has passed and ended.
1:24 Neither sorrow can restore it,
1:26 Nor can anxiety mend it.
1:28 It is impossible to reverse a tear that has fallen from the eye,
1:32 Just as it is impossible to return a child to the womb of its mother.
1:36 Some wise people say:
1:38 "The past is to be folded away, not recounted."
1:41 So why do some people abandon work and diligence,
1:45 Claiming that the past justifies their stagnation and surrender?
1:50 Reading from the ledger of the past is a waste of the present,
1:54 And a tearing apart of one's efforts.
1:56 Allah the Almighty mentioned in His Noble Book
2:00 The accounts of the nations of old,
2:02 And He, the Almighty, said:
2:04 ﴾That was a nation which has passed on. It will have [the consequence of] what it earned, and you will have what you have earned.﴿
2:12 ﴾And you will not be asked about what they used to do.﴿
2:19 From this verse, we understand
2:21 That the past has passed and ended,
2:24 And there is no benefit in dissecting the corpse of time
2:27 Or trying to turn back the wheels of history.
2:30 Whoever returns to the past
2:32 Is like one who grinds flour that is already ground, as the saying goes.
2:36 Rational people do not look backward,
2:40 Nor do they turn their gaze to the rear,
2:42 Because the wind blows and moves forward,
2:46 Water springs forth and flows forward,
2:49 And the caravan travels forward.
2:52 These are the laws of life.
2:54 So for those who oppose them,
2:56 And for those who turn backward,
2:58 Nothing in life changes;
3:00 Rather, it is we who must change.
3:03 Allah the Almighty said:
3:05 ﴾Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people﴿
3:10 ﴾until they change what is in themselves.﴿
3:15 Therefore, fix your eyes upon what is in front of you,
3:18 And do not cast your gaze backward,
3:20 Lest you stumble on the path and fall.
3:23 Let hope be connected to your footsteps,
3:26 To guide you along the correct path,
3:29 And enable you to set forth with full confidence,
3:32 To reach your goal and your objective.
3:35 Would that every worker, youth, and striver,
3:38 Every patient and persistent soul,
3:40 Would direct their gaze toward the distant horizon.
3:43 There is no harm in taking lessons from the past,
3:46 And there is no harm in taking from history
3:49 An opportunity to correct one's mistakes.
3:51 The harm lies only
3:53 In imprisoning ourselves in the corridors of the past,
3:56 Instead of setting out toward reform and construction.
4:00 These are concepts that have faded in an age
4:03 From which the sun of the future never sets.
4:06 Yet some among us wish to block
4:09 The light of the sun with their own hands—but how could they ever do that?
4:12 For every morning, the sun calls out:
4:15 "This is a new day, and tomorrow is a promising future."
4:19 So leave behind the tales of bygone times,
4:22 And turn toward life,
4:24 For what has passed is gone,
4:26 And what has passed will not return.
