it is a structure.

Souls, like buildings, vary in quality.

Some are towering, cohesive structures,

others are low-lying,

some are cracked,

and others are on the verge of collapse.

Thus it is with souls;

they are varying structures.

A building can be restored and its cracks repaired,

and the soul is the same;

one can repair what has cracked or deteriorated within it.

The construction of the soul is susceptible to weakness over time,

but whoever builds their soul strongly will not be affected.

Throughout the ages, those who built their souls have faced trials,

and they succeeded in them by the grace of Allah the Exalted.

Consider Sa'd Ibn al-Rabi', may Allah be pleased with him,

who was tested in the building of his soul.

He lay wounded on the day of Uhud,

having sustained seventy blows, ranging from spear thrusts

to sword strikes and arrow wounds.

Nothing remained for him in this world

but a few final moments.

Zayd Ibn Thabit, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated:

The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent me on the day of Uhud

to search for Sa'd Ibn al-Rabi', may Allah be pleased with him, among the fallen.

He said to me:

"If you find him, convey my greeting to him,

and say to him:

'The Messenger of Allah says to you:

Tell me, how do you find yourself?'"

Zayd said:

I began searching for him among the dead,

and I found him in his final breath,

having sustained seventy blows,

between spear thrusts, sword strikes, and arrow wounds.

I said to him:

"O Sa'd,

the Messenger of Allah conveys his greeting to you,

and says:

'Tell me, how do you find yourself?'"

"And upon the Messenger of Allah be peace,

and upon you be peace.

'By Allah, I can smell the fragrance of Paradise.'

And tell my people, the Ansar:

'You have no excuse before Allah

if the Messenger of Allah is harmed

while one of you still has an eye that blinks.'"

Then his soul departed, may Allah have mercy on him.

Sa'd remained steadfast in his final moment

because the building of his soul was towering.

He left instructions for those behind him,

and taught others the lessons of steadfastness

as he bade farewell to the world.

He did not leave a will regarding his family or his wealth,

but rather he left a will regarding the Messenger of Allah.

His concern was higher and more precious;

his concern was the Message and the Messenger, peace be upon him.

May Allah be pleased with him and grant him satisfaction.

Happiness pours into the hearts.

Draw closer to the Most Merciful,

so that joy may embrace you.

Attach your soul to your Lord,

and fill the surroundings with light.

Everyone who obeys the Lord

dissolves into the sweetest of feelings.

Darkness, then light,

and life thereafter.
