Misk al-Khattab (8) - If you meet Uwais al-Qarni

0:03 Within the embrace of Allah, happiness pours into the hearts.

0:11 Seek ever-greater closeness to the Most Merciful.

0:24 by Sheikh Usama Bahr, may Allah preserve him.

0:28 Whoever obeys the Lord dissolves into the sweetest of feelings.

0:35 If you meet Uways al-Qarani,

0:37 for Allah, the Exalted,

0:42 may elevate a person whom people might consider lowly,

0:46 and may lower a person whom people might consider great.

0:50 This is a truth we learn

0:53 through the story of Uways al-Qarani.

0:56 For the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said

0:59 to our masters 'Umar and 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both:

1:04 "If you meet Uways, ask him to seek forgiveness for you and to pray for you."

1:10 For he has a mother, and he has a white patch [on his skin].

1:13 Who is this man who would seek forgiveness for 'Umar,

1:17 the giant of Islam,

1:19 and for 'Ali, the knight of Islam?

1:23 The journey to search for Uways al-Qarani began

1:27 by 'Umar and 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with them.

1:31 They waited for ten years after the passing of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

1:36 watching for Uways during the Hajj season,

1:39 until the following year arrived.

1:43 A delegation from Yemen came,

1:45 and our master 'Umar said to the leader of the delegation,

1:48 after inviting them to a feast:

1:51 "Is there among you a man who is fair-skinned and has a white patch?"

1:55 The man said, "Perhaps you know him;

1:58 he is obscure, tending our camels."

2:02 So they went to him, and 'Umar said to him,

2:05 "What is your name?" He replied, "I am 'Abdullah [a servant of Allah]."

2:09 Our master 'Ali said, "We know that everyone under the heavens is a servant of Allah,

2:16 but what is the name your mother gave you?"

2:19 He asked, "Who are you two?"

2:22 Our master 'Umar said, "I am 'Umar, and this is 'Ali."

2:26 He stood up on his feet

2:29 and said, "The Commander of the Faithful and the son-in-law of the Messenger of Allah!

2:33 May Allah reward you with the best reward on behalf of Islam.

2:37 You have attained the honor of companionship [with the Prophet],

2:40 whereas I have not seen the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

2:45 Our master 'Umar said to him,

2:48 "O Uways, how do you imagine the Messenger of Allah?"

2:52 He replied, "I imagine him as a light that sparkles and fills the horizon."

2:57 'Umar wept out of longing for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

3:02 and said, "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

3:07 requested that you seek forgiveness for us and pray for us."

3:10 He replied, "I do not single anyone out in my prayers,

3:14 but I make them general."

3:16 'Umar said, "Admonish me, O Uways."

3:20 He said, "Seek the mercy of Allah when you obey Him,

3:24 and avoid His disobedience when you fear His punishment,

3:27 and let your hope in Him never be severed."

3:30 'Umar asked, "Where do you intend to go?"

3:34 He replied, "I intend to go to Kufa."

3:36 'Umar said, "Shall we provide you with some provision?"

3:39 He said, "No."

3:41 'Umar said, "Shall we speak to the governor of Kufa on your behalf?"

3:45 He said, "No.

3:47 I wish to be among the common folk, obscure and unknown."

3:51 Then he went on his way.

3:53 Uways died in a tent for the Muslims,

3:57 obscure, known by no one.

4:00 This story confirms for us

4:04 that there are people whose station with Allah is high.

4:09 Here is Uways al-Qarani,

4:11 who did not see the face of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

4:14 yet 'Umar and 'Ali speak of him,

4:17 and they are who they are,

4:19 and he commands them, if they meet Uways,

4:22 to have him seek forgiveness and pray for them.

4:25 There is no doubt that there are many like Uways,

4:29 and that Allah, the Exalted, loves them for the purity of their hearts and deeds,

4:34 even if they are among the common folk.

4:37 These are the true standards

4:40 by which a person should be known.

4:43 It is not wealth, nor position,

4:45 nor status, nor lineage;

4:47 these are the standards that Allah, the Exalted, considers.

4:50 So reflect upon that.

4:52 Within the embrace of Allah, happiness pours into the hearts.

5:01 Seek ever-greater closeness to the Most Merciful,

5:05 so that joy may embrace you.

5:09 Attach your soul to your Lord and fill the surroundings with light;

5:17 for whoever obeys the Lord dissolves into the sweetest of feelings.

5:24 For there is darkness, then light, and revelation thereafter.

5:32 If Allah wills a thing,

5:36 He says to it, "Be," and it is.
