Is acquiring it from those who are fully and perfectly grounded in it.

Part of a sound and refined scholarly methodology,

Is taking knowledge from its masters who have perfected it,

And from the scholars who have verified it.

For not everyone who pretends to be learned or assumes the role of a sheikh,

Has truly become a scholar or a sheikh.

Rather, knowledge has its sincere people,

And its skilled, firmly established masters.

So seek out such people.

Pursue their sciences.

And travel for the sake of their lessons.

For a sheikh is a key to knowledge and discernment,

Just as he is a key to piety and purity.

He is also a gateway to craftsmanship and influence.

It is a mistake to gather knowledge from those who are not its masters,

Or from certain rhetoricians or preachers,

Or from literary figures or writers,

Who are not of the people of the craft.

They may be scholars in their own specializations,

But do not mix sugar with salt,

Or water with milk.

Rather, sip from the spring and river of each science.

Among the harms of doing otherwise,

Are a lack of understanding and a weakness in mastery,

And the formation of erroneous perceptions.

Therefore, take fiqh from the jurist,

The hadith from the hadith scholar,

The science of Tafsir from those who carry it,

The language from its pioneers,

And poetry from its experts,

And the one who is audacious toward the sciences.

For their harm is greater than their benefit.
