Al-Hasan Ibn Salih, may Allah have mercy on him, said:

Who passed away in the year 169 AH:

"People are in need of this knowledge for their religion,

just as they are in need of food and drink for their worldly lives."

If people realized the importance of knowledge,

and their spiritual thirst for it,

they would think of it just as they do food and drink,

they would hasten toward it and strive for it,

and they would elevate themselves in their love for it.

And just as they love food and drink,

which contribute to maintaining health and worldly survival,

so too is knowledge; there is no religion without it,

nor is there uprightness apart from it,

nor is there happiness devoid of it.

Among the necessities of knowledge are:

The fiqh of prayer and all other acts of worship,

safety from innovations and deviations,

knowing what is pure and virtuous,

a remedy for confusion and doubts,

victory over the self and its desires,

and curbing the reins of the enemy and regrets.

And when everyone becomes certain of this need,

and considers it an urgent necessity,

they will dedicate themselves to acquiring it.

Schools will be built and universities will be highlighted,

and throngs of people will gather from every place,

for the sake of knowledge, love, and acquisition.

Books will be printed,

and libraries will become like restaurants,

in every place and on every street.

Indeed, mosques will be nourished with them,

and lessons and study circles will be filled with them,

because the matter is no longer a luxury or a Sunnah,

but a religious obligation,

and a worldly, civilizational necessity.
