'Abdullah Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

Who passed away in the year 32 AH.

"Set out as a scholar or a student of knowledge,

and do not set out as a sycophant between the two."

The pursuit of knowledge is a religious and worldly necessity,

for understanding life and acquiring its virtues,

and for guarding against its vices.

The best pursuit a servant can undertake,

and the most noble endeavor he can strive for,

is seeking knowledge and purifying his soul,

and dispelling ignorance and superstition from himself.

As Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

"Set out as a scholar or a student of knowledge."

So beware of being deprived of these stations,

for the scholar benefits the people,

and illuminates the universe with the lights of wisdom.

The student of knowledge spreads goodness and blesses his soul,

and safeguards his time and his intellect.

And beware of a life of sycophancy,

where you are aimless, lost, and fickle,

neither with the scholars nor with the students of knowledge.

The sycophant is the one who is hesitant,

who does not hold firm to an opinion,

and agrees with everyone on their views.

At times he is a lover of knowledge,

and at other times he is indifferent to it and preoccupied away from it.

If he is called to knowledge, he learns,

and if he is called to amusement, he is distracted.

He does not resolve his affairs,

nor does he address the flaws in his intellect and behavior.

When a person is first born,

and emerges into this life,

he is in dire need of knowledge,

and of understanding people and their crafts,

especially as he observes his parents, the neighbors,

the marketplace, and the mosques,

and how people benefit from one another.

His own soul compels him to seek this out,

even if he felt constrained by it at first.

But when he sees within it,

all the members of society,

he realizes its inevitability and necessity.

“And Allah brought you forth from the wombs of your mothers knowing nothing, and gave you hearing and sight and hearts that haply ye might give thanks.” (16:78)

and He gave you hearing, sight,

and hearts so that you might..."
