0:15 Presents:
0:17 Glimpses from the Lives of the Tabi'un
0:21 By Dr. 'Abd al-Rahman Ra'fat al-Basha,
0:26 May Allah have mercy on him.
0:30 Al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym,
0:32 May Allah have mercy on him.
0:43 Hilal ibn Isaf said to his guest, Mundhir al-Thawri:
0:47 "Shall I not take you, O Mundhir, to the Shaykh,
0:50 That we might renew our faith for an hour?"
0:52 Mundhir replied, "Indeed!
0:54 By Allah, nothing brought me to Kufa
0:57 Except the desire to meet your Shaykh,
0:59 Al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym,
1:01 And the longing to spend an hour absorbing his faith.
1:05 But have you sought permission for us to visit him?
1:08 For I have been told
1:10 That ever since he was afflicted with paralysis,
1:12 He has confined himself to his home,
1:14 Devoted himself entirely to his Lord,
1:16 And turned away from meeting people."
1:18 Hilal said,
1:20 "He has been this way ever since Kufa came to know him.
1:24 His illness has changed nothing about him."
1:27 Mundhir said, "Very well,
1:30 But you know that such men
1:34 Have delicate dispositions.
1:36 Do you think we should initiate conversation with the Shaykh
1:38 And ask him about what we wish,
1:40 Or should we remain silent
1:42 And listen to whatever he wishes to impart?"
1:44 Hilal replied,
1:46 "If you were to sit with Al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym
1:48 For an entire year,
1:50 He would not speak to you
1:52 Unless you spoke to him first,
1:54 Nor would he initiate speech unless you asked him.
1:57 For he has made his speech remembrance
2:00 And his silence contemplation."
2:02 Mundhir said,
2:04 "Let us proceed to him then, with the blessing of Allah."
2:07 They then went to the Shaykh.
2:09 When they entered his presence, they greeted him with peace and asked,
2:13 "How is the Shaykh feeling this morning?"
2:15 He replied,
2:17 "I have awakened weak and sinful,
2:19 Consuming my provision and awaiting my appointed time."
2:22 Hilal said to him,
2:24 "I could bring you a skilled physician to treat you.
2:27 Do you permit me to call one for you?"
2:30 He replied,
2:32 "O Hilal!
2:33 Indeed, I know that medicine is real.
2:36 But I considered 'Ad, Thamud,
2:39 And the Companions of the Rass,
2:41 “And (the tribes of) A'ad and Thamud, and the dwellers in Ar-Rass, and many generations in between.” (25:38)
2:44 And I looked at their eagerness for worldly life
2:46 And their desire for its pleasures—
2:49 Yet they were far mightier than us in strength
2:52 And possessed greater power.
2:54 Among them were physicians,
2:56 And among them were the sick.
2:58 Yet neither did the healer endure,
3:00 Nor did the healed!"
3:02 Then Al-Rabi' let out a deep sigh
3:04 A deep sigh, and said:
3:06 "If physical illness were the true disease,
3:09 We would have sought its cure."
3:11 Mundhir then asked for clarification, saying:
3:14 "What then is the disease, O noble Shaykh?"
3:17 He replied,
3:18 "The disease is sins."
3:20 Mundhir asked,
3:23 "And what is the cure?"
3:25 He replied,
3:26 "The cure is seeking forgiveness."
3:28 Mundhir asked,
3:30 "And how is the healing attained?"
3:32 He replied,
3:34 "By repenting and never returning to the sin."
3:37 Then he gazed intently at us and said:
3:40 "Beware of the hidden inner states! Beware of the hidden inner states!
3:42 Attend to the secret deeds that are hidden from people,
3:46 Yet are fully manifest to Allah Almighty.
3:49 That is, clearly visible to Him;
3:51 Seek their remedy!"
3:53 Mundhir asked,
3:55 "And what is their remedy?"
3:57 The Shaykh replied,
3:59 "Sincere repentance."
4:01 Then he wept until his tears soaked his beard.
4:06 Mundhir said to him,
4:08 "Do you weep, when you are who you are?"
4:10 He replied,
4:12 "Far from it!
4:13 Why should I not weep,
4:15 When I have known a people compared to whom we are like thieves?"
4:19 —He meant the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them.
4:23 Hilal said:
4:25 "While we were in that state,
4:27 The Shaykh's son entered upon us,
4:29 Greeted us, and said,
4:31 'O my father,
4:33 My mother has prepared a fine sweet halva dish for you,
4:37 And it would gladden her heart if you ate from it.
4:40 Shall I bring it to you?'
4:42 He said, 'Bring it.'
4:44 When his son went out to fetch it,
4:46 A beggar knocked at the door.
4:48 The Shaykh said, 'Let him in.'
4:50 When the beggar reached the courtyard of the house,
4:52 I looked at him,
4:54 And he was an elderly man
4:56 In tattered clothes,
4:58 With drool running down his chin,
5:01 And his facial features clearly showed he was mentally impaired.
5:05 Hardly had I raised my eyes from him
5:07 When the Shaykh's son returned
5:09 Carrying the dish of halva.
5:11 The father gestured to him
5:13 To place it before the beggar.
5:16 So he placed it before him,
5:18 And the man set upon it,
5:20 Devouring its contents voraciously
5:23 While his saliva dripped over it.
5:26 He kept eating
5:28 Until he had finished everything on the dish.
5:31 His son then said to him,
5:33 'May Allah have mercy on you, father!
5:36 My mother went to great trouble to make this sweet dish for you,
5:40 And we longed for you to eat from it,
5:43 Yet you fed it to this man
5:45 Who does not even know what he ate!'
5:48 The Shaykh replied, 'O my son,
5:50 Even if he does not know,
5:52 Allah knows.'
5:55 He then recited the words of the Exalted and Almighty:
5:58 ﴿You will never attain righteousness
6:00 Until you spend from that which you love.
6:04 And whatever you spend,
6:08 Allah is fully Aware of it.﴾
6:13 While he was in that state,
6:15 A man from among his relatives entered upon him
6:18 And said, 'O Abu Yazid,
6:21 Al-Husayn ibn Fatima has been killed—peace be upon him
6:24 And upon his mother!'
6:26 He said, 'Indeed, to Allah we belong,
6:29 And to Him we shall return.'
6:31 Then he recited the words of the Exalted:
6:34 “Say: O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth! Knower of the Invisible and the Visible! Thou wilt judge between Thy slaves concerning that wherein they used to differ.” (39:46)
6:37 “Say: O Allah! Creator of the heavens and the earth! Knower of the Invisible and the Visible! Thou wilt judge between Thy slaves concerning that wherein they used to differ.” (39:46)
6:41 ﴿O Knower of the unseen and the witnessed,
6:44 You will judge between Your servants
6:46 Concerning that over which they used to differ.﴾
6:50 But the man was not satisfied with his words,
6:53 So he asked him,
6:55 'What do you say regarding his killing?'
6:57 He replied, 'I say: to Allah is their return,
7:01 And with Allah is their reckoning.'
7:04 Hilal said:
7:07 "Then, seeing that the time for the noon prayer was approaching,
7:10 I said to the Shaykh,
7:12 'Exhort me.'
7:13 He said,
7:15 'O Hilal, let not
7:17 The abundance of people's praise delude you,
7:19 For people know nothing of you
7:22 Except your outward appearance.
7:24 Know that you are bound for your deeds,
7:27 And that every deed not intended for
7:30 The Countenance of Allah comes to naught.'
7:32 Mundhir then said to him,
7:34 'And exhort me as well, may you be rewarded with good.'
7:37 He said,
7:39 'O Mundhir,
7:40 Fear Allah regarding what you know;
7:43 And as for that whose knowledge has been kept from you,
7:45 Entrust it to the One who knows it.
7:47 O Mundhir,
7:49 Let no one among you say,
7:51 "O Allah, I repent to You,"
7:53 And then fail to repent,
7:55 For that would be a lie.
7:57 Rather, let him say,
7:59 "O Allah, accept my repentance,"
8:01 For that is a supplication.
8:04 And know, O Mundhir,
8:06 That there is no good in speech
8:08 Except in proclaiming Allah's oneness,
8:10 Praising Allah,
8:12 Declaring Allah's greatness, glorifying Allah,
8:15 Asking Him for good,
8:17 Seeking His refuge from evil,
8:19 Enjoining good,
8:21 Forbidding evil,
8:23 And reciting the Qur'an.'
8:25 Mundhir then said to him,
8:27 'We have sat with you
8:29 "Yet we have never heard you recite poetry,
8:32 though we have seen some of your companions
8:34 recite it."
8:36 He replied:
8:38 "There is nothing you utter here
8:40 but that it is recorded and will be read out
8:42 against you there;
8:44 and I would hate to find in my record
8:46 a line of verse
8:48 being read out against me on the Day the Account
8:50 is established."
8:53 Then he turned to all of us
8:55 and said: "Constantly remember
8:57 death,
8:59 for it is your awaited, absent visitor.
9:01 And when an absent one's absence has lasted long,
9:03 his return is imminent,
9:05 and his kin eagerly await him."
9:07 Then tears welled in his eyes,
9:09 and he said: "What shall
9:11 we do tomorrow,
9:13 “Nay, but when the earth is ground to atoms, grinding, grinding,” (89:21)
9:15 ◁when the earth is leveled, pounded, and crushed,▷
9:17 ◁and your Lord comes with the angels,▷
9:19 ◁rank upon rank,▷
9:21 ◁and brought that Day▷
9:23 ◁is Hell?▷"
9:25 Hilal said:
9:27 "Scarcely had al-Rabi' finished speaking
9:29 when the call for the Zuhr prayer was made.
9:31 So he turned to his son and said:
9:33 'Come, let us answer Allah's caller!'
9:35 His son said:
9:37 'Help me
9:39 carry him to the mosque, may you be rewarded
9:41 with good.' So we lifted him up,
9:43 and he rested his right arm on
9:45 his son's shoulder and his left arm on
9:47 my shoulder, and began
9:49 shuffling between us,
9:51 with his feet trailing along the ground,
9:53 dragging."
9:55 Then Mundhir said to him:
9:57 "O Abu Yazid!
9:59 Allah has indeed granted you a dispensation;
10:01 if only you would pray in your house!"
10:03 He replied: "It is
10:05 as you say,
10:07 but I heard the caller cry:
10:09 'Come to success!
10:11 Come to success!'
10:13 So whoever among you hears
10:15 the caller summon him to success,
10:17 let him answer it, even if he must crawl."
10:19 Furthermore,
10:22 who was this al-Rabi'
10:24 ibn Khuthaym?
10:26 He was an eminent figure among the Tabi'un
10:28 and one of the eight
10:30 who represented the pinnacle
10:32 of asceticism in their era.
10:34 He was of pure Arab descent,
10:36 of Mudari lineage—
10:38 meaning his ancestry traces back
10:40 to Mudar—
10:42 and converges with the Messenger of Allah,
10:44 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
10:46 through his ancestors Ilyas and Mudar.
10:48 From the tender days of his youth,
10:50 he grew up in obedience to Allah,
10:52 and from his earliest years,
10:54 he weaned himself upon piety toward Him.
10:56 His mother would sleep at night
10:58 and then awake,
11:00 only to find her young son
11:02 still standing in his prayer niche,
11:04 immersed in his intimate supplication,
11:06 absorbed in his prayer.
11:08 She would call out to him,
11:10 saying: "O my son!
11:12 O Rabi'!
11:14 Will you not sleep?"
11:16 He would reply: "How can one sleep
11:18 when night falls upon him
11:20 while he dreads
11:22 the sudden assault of enemies?"
11:24 Tears would then roll down
11:26 the cheeks of the elderly woman,
11:28 and she would pray for his welfare.
11:30 When al-Rabi' grew into manhood
11:33 and matured,
11:35 his scrupulous piety grew alongside him,
11:37 and with his growth deepened
11:39 his fear of Allah.
11:41 His mother was deeply troubled by the frequency
11:43 of his entreaties
11:45 and the intensity of his weeping in the darkness
11:47 of the night while people slept,
11:49 to the point that she began to suspect the worst.
11:51 She began calling out to him,
11:53 saying: "What is it
11:55 that has afflicted you, my son?
11:57 Have you committed a grave offense?
11:59 Have you killed a soul?"
12:01 He said: "Yes,
12:03 mother, I have killed
12:05 a soul." She said
12:07 anxiously: "And who is this
12:09 slain person, my son,
12:11 so that we may have people go
12:13 to his family in the hope that they might
12:15 pardon you? By Allah,
12:17 if the victim's family knew what you endure
12:19 of weeping
12:21 and what you suffer of sleeplessness,
12:23 they would surely take pity on you!"
12:25 He replied: "Do not speak
12:27 to anyone, for it is only
12:29 my own soul that I have slain;
12:31 I have slain it with sins."
12:34 Al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym studied
12:36 under 'Abdullah
12:38 ibn Mas'ud, the companion
12:40 of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
12:42 and the closest of the Companions
12:44 in guidance and deportment to the Prophet,
12:46 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
12:48 Al-Rabi' was attached
12:50 to his teacher
12:52 as a newborn clings to its mother,
12:54 and the teacher loved his student
12:56 as a father loves his only child.
12:58 Al-Rabi' used to enter
13:00 upon Ibn Mas'ud without asking permission,
13:02 and whenever he was with him,
13:04 no one else was permitted
13:06 to enter until al-Rabi'
13:08 had departed.
13:10 Ibn Mas'ud saw such
13:12 purity in al-Rabi''s soul,
13:14 sincerity in his heart, and excellence
13:16 in his worship
13:18 that his heart would fill with sorrow over
13:20 his having lived after the time of the Prophet,
13:22 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
13:24 and his being deprived
13:26 of his companionship.
13:28 He used to say to him:
13:30 "O Abu Yazid,
13:32 had the Messenger of Allah,
13:34 peace be upon him, seen you, he would have loved you!"
13:36 He would also say to him:
13:38 "I have never looked at you
13:40 without remembering the humble and devout."
13:42 And 'Abdullah
13:45 ibn Mas'ud was not exaggerating in that,
13:47 for al-Rabi'
13:49 ibn Khuthaym attained a level of reverent fear,
13:51 scrupulous piety, and devotion
13:53 seldom matched
13:55 by anyone of his generation.
13:57 Traditions have been transmitted regarding this
13:59 that continue
14:01 to adorn the pages of history.
14:03 Among them is what
14:05 one of his companions narrated, saying:
14:07 "I accompanied al-Rabi'
14:09 ibn Khuthaym for twenty years,
14:11 and I never heard him utter a word
14:13 except that it was one that ascends;"
14:15 and he recited
14:17 the words of Him, the Mighty and Majestic:
14:19 “Whoso desireth power (should know that) all power belongeth to Allah. Unto Him good words ascend, and the pious deed doth He exalt; but those who plot iniquities, theirs will be an awful doom; and the plotting of such (folk) will come to naught.” (35:10)
14:21 ◁"and righteous deeds▷
14:23 ◁He raises."▷
14:25 And 'Abd al-Rahman
14:27 ibn 'Ajlan reported, saying:
14:29 "I stayed overnight at al-Rabi''s house one night,
14:31 and when he was certain that I had fallen
14:33 asleep, he arose to pray
14:35 and recited the words of Him, the Mighty
14:37 and Majestic:
14:39 “Or do those who commit ill-deeds suppose that We shall make them as those who believe and do good works, the same in life and death? Bad is their judgment!” (45:21)
14:41 ◁"that We will make them▷
14:43 ◁like those who believed▷
14:45 ◁and did righteous deeds,▷
14:47 ◁equal in▷
14:49 ◁their life▷
14:51 ◁and their death?▷
14:53 ◁Evil is that which▷
14:55 ◁they judge!"▷
14:57 He spent his entire night praying
14:59 with this verse,
15:01 reciting it over and over again
15:03 until the dawn broke upon him,
15:05 while his eyes poured forth
15:07 tears profusely.
15:09 Concerning al-Rabi''s awe of Allah
15:13 and his reverent fear, there are many accounts;
15:15 among them
15:17 is what a group of
15:19 His companions recounted:
15:21 "One day, we set out in the company of 'Abdullah
15:23 Ibn Mas'ud,
15:25 and with us was Al-Rabi' ibn Khuthaym.
15:27 When we reached the banks
15:29 of the Euphrates, we passed
15:31 by a huge kiln whose
15:33 fire had been stoked furiously, sending sparks flying
15:35 everywhere,
15:37 while its tongues of flame leaped upward
15:39 and its roaring crackle could be heard.
15:41 Stones had been cast into the kiln
15:43 to be burned
15:45 until they turned into quicklime.
15:47 When Al-Rabi' saw
15:49 that fire, he froze in his tracks,
15:51 seized by a violent
15:53 trembling, and he recited
15:55 the words of Allah, the Exalted and Majestic:
15:57 'When it sees them
15:59 from a distant place,
16:01 they will hear its
16:03 raging and roaring;
16:05 and when
16:07 they are hurled into a narrow
16:09 place therein, bound in chains,
16:11 they will cry out there for destruction.'
16:13 Then
16:15 he collapsed unconscious.
16:17 We stayed by his side until
16:19 he regained consciousness from his swoon,
16:21 and we carried him back to his home."
16:23 Indeed,
16:27 Al-Rabi'
16:29 ibn Khuthaym spent his entire life
16:31 anticipating death
16:33 and preparing to meet it.
16:35 When death approached him,
16:37 his daughter began to weep,
16:39 so he said to her:
16:41 "What makes you weep, my little daughter,
16:43 when boundless good
16:45 is coming to your father?"
16:47 Then his soul surrendered to its Creator.
16:55 "O Abu Yazid!
16:58 Had the Messenger of Allah,
17:00 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, seen you,
17:02 he surely would have loved you."
17:05 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud,
17:09 standing as an exemplar and paragon,
17:11 closely followed the Messenger,
17:13 never wavering throughout his days.
17:15 They were once here,
17:17 showering blessings like rain clouds
17:19 upon our lives;
17:21 thus, among us,
17:23 their memory continually soars high.
17:25 They departed,
17:27 leaving behind in our conscience
17:29 a burning question:
17:31 Has any star like them
17:33 ever risen and shone so bright?
17:35 They filled
17:37 this life with glorious deeds
17:39 through their noble actions,
17:41 and through them, the world
17:43 of humanity truly flourished.
