0:27 "and as for the people,"
0:28 "they eat sheep and lambs,"
0:29 "but they do not eat dogs."

0:35 "Why, then?"

0:59 A sermon by the honorable Sheikh
1:01 Khalid Ibn 'Abdullah al-Hamudi,
1:03 may Allah preserve him.
1:05 O servants of Allah,
1:08 I will speak today
1:10 about a matter
1:12 for which I will pave the way
1:14 with these three stories.
1:16 The first:
1:18 One day,
1:20 a young man graduated
1:23 from the College of Economics
1:25 and Commerce
1:27 at one of the most prestigious international universities.
1:29 After the young man finished
1:32 his studies,
1:34 he returned to his father
1:36 to help him
1:38 in the business of selling appliances,
1:40 selling electrical
1:42 and home appliances
1:44 that he owned.
1:46 After a few days
1:48 of working,
1:50 the young man noticed
1:52 that his father would donate every month
1:54 a refrigerator,
1:56 or an oven, or a washing machine,
1:58 to a needy person among the poor,
2:00 or the orphans, or the widows.
2:02 The young man was astonished
2:04 by this matter
2:06 and objected to it
2:08 strongly,
2:10 arguing that it was
2:12 a loss for the business and trade.
2:14 The young man began
2:16 to calculate the cost of these
2:18 donations
2:20 monthly and annually,
2:22 just as he calculated the amount
2:24 over ten years,
2:26 and what if these funds
2:28 had been utilized
2:30 to increase capital,
2:32 increase profit,
2:34 and expand the business and trade.
2:36 He came up with high figures
2:38 and significant sums of money
2:40 that were not to be underestimated.
2:42 And so,
2:44 he decided
2:46 to discuss this matter with his father
2:48 and tried to convince him
2:50 to stop this
2:52 action that was harming him,
2:54 for it contradicted commercial logic
2:56 and everything he had learned
2:58 of the laws
3:00 of economics and trade
3:02 in the greatest universities
3:04 of the world.
3:06 His father did nothing
3:08 but smile calmly
3:10 and ask him a question
3:12 that was extremely simple.
3:14 He said, "My son,"
3:16 "are sheep"
3:18 "more numerous, or dogs?"
3:20 The boy replied,
3:22 "Sheep are certainly more numerous."
3:24 The father asked him,
3:26 "And how many times do dogs give birth"
3:28 "in a year?"
3:30 "And how many times do sheep give birth?"
3:32 The boy said,
3:34 "Dogs give birth more than once,"
3:36 "and each time,"
3:38 "five or six,"
3:40 "and perhaps more,"
3:42 "while sheep"
3:44 "do not give birth in a single year"
3:46 "to more than one lamb or two at most."
3:48 The father continued,
3:50 saying,
3:52 "And do people"
3:54 "eat the meat of sheep and lambs,"
3:56 "or the meat of dogs?"
3:58 The young man's astonishment increased
4:00 at the questions,
4:02 and he did not know what his father
4:04 wanted to say to him.
4:06 But he replied in any case,
4:08 saying,
4:10 "Of course, people"
4:12 "eat sheep and lambs."
4:14 The father said to him,
4:16 "As long as dogs,"
4:18 "and as long as people"
4:20 "eat sheep and lambs,"
4:22 "and do not eat dogs,"
4:24 "why, then,"
4:26 "is the number of sheep"
4:28 "many times over the number of dogs?"
4:30 The young man fell silent
4:32 and could not answer
4:34 this question.
4:36 The father continued his hadith, saying,
4:38 "My son,"
4:40 "these matters"
4:42 "are not taught in the greatest"
4:44 "universities in the world."
4:46 "This is barakah,"
4:48 "and this is charity,"
4:50 "and doing good,"
4:52 "which increases wealth and causes it to grow,"
4:54 "and never diminishes it."
4:56 "Indeed, it is a profitable"
4:58 "trade with Allah."
5:00 The Messenger of Allah,
5:02 peace be upon him, said:
5:04 "Wealth does not decrease"
5:06 "because of charity."
5:08 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.
5:10 This is the first story.
5:12 And listen to the second, O servants of Allah,
5:14 which
5:16 is more amazing than the first
5:18 regarding the virtue of this subject
5:20 that we are talking about.
5:22 There was
5:24 a teacher who was giving lessons
5:26 to a group
5:28 of women,
5:30 and she was urging them to give charity.
5:32 After the lesson ended,
5:34 and in order to ensure
5:36 that the teacher
5:38 was certain everyone understood the lesson well,
5:40 she opened a box
5:42 to collect charity for the poor.
5:44 Every woman present
5:46 who was attending the lesson
5:48 hastened
5:50 to give charity
5:52 with whatever money she had.
5:54 Indeed, there were even some
5:56 who did not have enough money,
5:58 so they began to give charity
6:00 from their jewelry.
6:02 Some of them took off
6:04 their earrings,
6:06 and some took off their necklaces.
6:08 Among those sitting
6:10 was an elderly woman,
6:12 well-off,
6:14 who was wearing a necklace
6:16 made of pure
6:18 pearls.
6:20 She stood up and donated this necklace.
6:22 At this point, the teacher
6:24 refused
6:26 to take it and said
6:28 to her, "This necklace"
6:30 "is very valuable,"
6:32 "I cannot accept it."
6:34 But the woman
6:36 insisted on donating it.
6:38 The next day,
6:40 the teacher went
6:42 to a jeweler
6:44 to sell what she had received
6:46 and then donate it
6:48 as charity.
6:50 When the jeweler
6:52 saw the valuable
6:54 The jeweler was dazzled by it,
6:56 and he said to her,
6:58 "What a precious necklace this is!
7:00 However,
7:02 to appraise it,
7:04 I must first remove
7:06 all the beads."
7:08 "Do you agree?"
7:10 The teacher agreed.
7:12 A merchant came to the teacher,
7:14 looking fearful,
7:16 and said to her, "When
7:18 I removed the beads from their place,
7:20 I found beneath them
7:22 clippings of hair
7:24 and women’s fingernails.
7:26 These things are likely
7:28 the work of sorcery."
7:30 At that moment, the teacher realized
7:32 that she was facing a story
7:34 about the virtue of charity.
7:36 The following Friday,
7:38 the teacher met the woman
7:40 who had donated the necklace,
7:42 and said to her,
7:44 "How are you?
7:46 How are your affairs?"
7:48 She replied, "I had been,
7:50 along with my children and my husband,
7:52 in a state of dispersion and estrangement,
7:54 and great mutual aversion.
7:56 But as soon as I gave the necklace in charity,
7:58 I sat with my children
8:00 and my husband
8:02 at one table
8:04 for the first time
8:06 in over twenty years.
8:08 In fact, we have begun
8:10 to converse and laugh
8:12 naturally,
8:14 as if nothing had ever happened."
8:16 Do you see, O servants of Allah?
8:18 Then the teacher said to her,
8:20 "This charity
8:22 warded off harm from you,
8:24 for the necklace had been enchanted."
8:26 The woman was astonished
8:28 and asked, "How so?"
8:30 "A close friend gifted me the necklace,
8:32 and I loved her
8:34 to the point that I would not take it off,
8:36 even while I slept."
8:38 "So praise be to Allah,
8:40 who removed the veil
8:42 from my insight,
8:44 and by His grace,
8:46 made me never to be miserable again."
8:48 As for the third, O servants of Allah,
8:50 I tell you
8:52 about a man I know closely,
8:54 and he may even be among us
8:56 in this mosque.
8:58 I have traveled with him,
9:00 and I found him to be generous
9:02 and a lover of good.
9:04 He was afflicted with an illness
9:06 that baffled the doctors,
9:08 and they were unable to treat it.
9:10 He began to say of himself,
9:12 he said, "I reached a state
9:14 known only to Allah,
9:16 of despair and exhaustion,
9:18 until I began
9:20 to await death.
9:22 Then Allah opened the way for me through charity,
9:24 so I began to give charity
9:26 every day, morning and evening,
9:28 with the intention
9:30 that Allah would heal me."
9:32 He said, "Days passed,
9:34 and I began to see
9:36 a vast difference
9:38 and a wide gap
9:40 in my health for the better,
9:42 until the appointed day came,
9:44 and I met with the attending physician.
9:46 He requested a repeat
9:48 of the tests.
9:50 When he saw them,
9:52 he was dazzled and amazed.
9:54 By Allah,
9:56 there was no trace of any illness
9:58 from what had been there before.
10:00 'What did you do?
10:02 What medicine did you take?'
10:04 When I told him,
10:06 he said, 'There is no god but Allah.
10:08 Indeed, Allah is over all things
10:10 omnipotent.'"
10:12 Do you see, O servants of Allah,
10:14 the effect of charity?
10:16 Charity is like a wide well,
10:18 which,
10:20 if you lower a bucket into it,
10:22 returns to you
10:24 full, containing blessings
10:26 that only Allah knows.
10:28 Yes, it returns to you,
10:30 your bucket, filled with blessings
10:32 that never end.
10:34 Our topic, O servants of Allah,
10:36 our topic is charity.
10:38 Charity, O servants of Allah,
10:40 and its
10:42 great impact.
10:44 Charity is a protection from the Fire,
10:46 and charity extinguishes the anger of the Almighty,
10:48 and wipes away sin.
10:50 Charity is shade for its giver
10:52 on the Day of Resurrection.
10:54 Charity is a cause for healing
10:56 from diseases of the heart
10:58 and the body.
11:00 Charity, O servants of Allah,
11:02 is a cause for winning
11:04 the supplication of the angels
11:06 for replacement and compensation.
11:08 Charity is a cause for blessing,
11:10 and a cause for entering Paradise,
11:12 and for salvation from the Fire.
11:14 Charity is a cause that
11:16 gladdens the heart,
11:18 preserves wealth,
11:20 repels calamity,
11:22 and protects against evil ends.
11:24 Charity, O servants of Allah,
11:26 covers every fault,
11:28 increases one's lifespan,
11:30 attracts the prayers of people,
11:32 and intercedes for you before Allah.
11:34 I ask Allah, the Majestic,
11:36 to make us among His servants
11:38 who do good,
11:40 among His servants who give charity,
11:42 and among His righteous, God-fearing servants.
11:44 Until our next meeting,
11:48 within the "Echo of the Pulpits" series,
11:50 and peace be upon you,
11:52 and the mercy of Allah,
11:54 and His blessings.
