A praise that our Lord loves and with which He is pleased,

I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner,

The Ever-Living, the Praiseworthy,

The Lord of the Glorious Throne,

The Doer of what He wills,

The Judge, the Just, who is never unjust to His servants.

To Allah I have entrusted a matter I do not fully comprehend,

I lack the strength to bear it, yet I shall accept it.

O Lord, were it not for You, there would be no support and no one else,

For You are sufficient, and You are Allah.

I bear witness that our master, our Prophet, and our beloved, Muhammad, is the servant of Allah and His Messenger,

His chosen one and His intimate friend,

Possessor of noble character,

Sound judgment,

And truthful speech.

He is more entitled to the believers than their own selves,

And dearer to them than their own souls.

Sending blessings upon him in the public assembly is mandatory,

And it is a gift for his Ummah.

So send blessings upon the best of creation, Muhammad,

That the misery of sorrows may be removed from you.

Send blessings upon him abundantly, then rejoice

In his company in the Garden of the Most Merciful.

Upon Your servant, Messenger, Prophet, and beloved, Muhammad,

I advise you and myself to fear Allah,

“O ye who believe! Guard your duty to Allah, and speak words straight to the point;” (33:70)

That He may rectify your deeds for you,

And forgive you your sins.

“He will adjust your works for you and will forgive you your sins. Whosoever obeyeth Allah and His messenger, he verily hath gained a signal victory.” (33:71)

The earth is surging with disasters and changes,

And humanity is taken by surprise by calamities and punishments.

Allah turns the hearts of His servants and shows them signs,

And tribulations that cause hearts to tremble,

And attach them to the Knower of the Unseen.

Cosmic signs striking humanity here and there,

Why? Perhaps they might return,

Perhaps they might remember,

Perhaps they might humble themselves in supplication.

“If only, when Our disaster came on them, they had been humble! But their hearts were hardened and the devil made all that they used to do seem fair unto them!” (6:43)

Among the cosmic phenomena

That deserve for us to pause

For reflection and remembrance,

And which shake the earth from time to time,

Is the phenomenon of earthquakes.

How much we need to pause before this phenomenon

With a perspective of faith,

Far from the purely materialistic analysis

That builds no faith and purifies no soul.

Servants of Allah,

Indeed, the earthquake and earthquakes

Are a sign among the signs of Allah on His earth,

And a decree among the decrees of Allah in His dominion.

He afflicts with them whom He wills by His wisdom,

And averts them from whom He wills.

He is not questioned about what He does,

While they will be questioned.

Earthquakes and seismic tremors

Are warning messages

From the Almighty, the Compeller.

And We send not the signs except as a warning.

Indeed, the phenomenon of earthquakes

Is a most profound cosmic sign,

At which souls shudder,

And hearts are torn with fear.

Behold the state of the earth

As it cracks, splits, and changes;

It is no longer the earth

That people knew, settled upon,

Dwelt within,
5:04
And found comfort in. This earth,

Which Allah made a stable dwelling,

In the blink of an eye,

And a moment’s notice,

Allah changes its state from one condition to another.

While people are heedless in their worldly lives,

Or persisting in their diversion,

Or while they are asleep,

Suddenly, the solid, still earth

Begins to convulse.

Ceilings collapse,

Buildings sway,
5:34
And walls scatter.

Minds are bewildered,

Eyes stare in horror,

Hearts reach the throats,

Limbs are mangled,

Blood flows,

Severed limbs,
5:49
Scattered bodies,
5:51
And corpses under the rubble,

Moaning and suffering.

People emerge with the trembling of the earthquake,

Wounded,

Dazed,
6:02
Displaced,
6:03
Walking,
6:05
But in no particular direction,

Seeking,
6:08
But with no destination.

No houses to save them,

Nor towers to shelter them.

It is a sudden, fleeting shock

That cannot

Be expressed by the tongue,

Or depicted by the pen.

How many lessons and admonitions

Are in the sign of the earthquake,

Of which we are heedless!

How many messages

Are in the phenomenon of earthquakes for humanity,

Addressing them
6:37
Through the language of reality, not just words.

The first of those messages says:

How great is the power of the Creator, glory be to Him,

And how severe is His punishment!

Exalted is His greatness,
6:50
And majestic is His power.

If He intends evil for a people,

There is no turning it back,

And they have, besides Allah,
6:58
No protector or helper.

There is no repelling His decree,

And no escaping His command.

If He intends a thing,

He only says to it,

"Be," and it is.

Before the greatness of Allah, the firm mountains have crumbled,

And from fear of Him,

The hard rocks have split.

How much we need

To examine ourselves,

Our veneration of our Lord’s station,

Our submission to Him,

And our reverence,

In the face of these terrifying changes.

How much we need

To perceive the greatness of Allah,

While we are showered with desires,

Surrounded by doubts,

Attached to material things,

And competing in outward appearances.

O Lord,

O Lord, protect us,

And take charge of our affairs.

Among the messages of earthquakes

Is that on the day they shake with their trembling,

It is as if they are addressing the people of the earth

Regarding the helplessness of the created,

The weakness of the created,

The poverty of the created,

And their lack of resourcefulness.

And that the created,

No matter how much they transgress and oppress,

No matter how much they act arrogantly and pridefully,

And no matter how much power and progress they are granted,

“And whoso respondeth not to Allah's summoner he can nowise escape in the earth, and he hath no protecting friends instead of Him. Such are in error manifest.” (46:32)

This human remains,

Regardless of what they have reached or become,

Poor and humiliated,

Having, besides Allah,

No protector or helper.

This human remains,

Even if they discover the atom,

Ascend to space,

Build missiles

That cross continents,

And monitor the locations of earthquakes

And their magnitudes,

They remain weak and bewildered

Before this divine soldier.

No military power,

No arsenal of war,

And no advanced technology

Can reduce the scale of these material losses,

Let alone prevent them

Or delay them.

And another message

That these earthquakes preach to us:

For what we see today

Of terrifying destruction
9:11
And tragic scenes
9:13
Is but a small part
9:15
And a brief glimpse

Of the earthquake of a Great Day.

If the people of the earth

are struck by
9:23
a slight movement
9:25
and minor tremors
9:27
in a matter of seconds,

not even reaching a full minute,

and in a limited area,
9:33
then how shall it be for us, O people of faith?

“When the earth is shaken with a shock” (56:4)

And the mountains are crumbled to dust.

What will be our state

when the earth and the mountains are lifted

and leveled in a single crushing blow?

It is a quake that brings no death,

but it holds infinite terror.

“When Earth is shaken with her (final) earthquake” (99:1)

And the earth casts out its burdens.

“And man saith: What aileth her?” (99:3)

“Lo! We warn you of a doom at hand, a day whereon a man will look on that which his own hands have sent before, and the disbeliever will cry: "Would that I were dust!"” (78:40)

and every pregnant woman will miscarry.

Indeed, the convulsion of the Hour

is a momentous thing.

On the day you see it,

“On the day when ye behold it, every nursing mother will forget her nursling and every pregnant one will be delivered of her burden, and thou (Muhammad) wilt see mankind as drunken, yet they will not be drunken, but the Doom of Allah will be strong (upon them).” (22:2)

whenever they witnessed such catastrophes.

When the sun eclipsed during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

and the people saw it,

he went out to prayer in alarm,

dragging his garment in haste.

The earth shook during the time of 'Umar,

warning against sins during times of catastrophe

does not mean accusing people of negligence

or labeling them as corrupt.

Rather, these are messages from Allah.

"And We send not the signs

avert calamities

through abundant seeking of forgiveness,

“But Allah would not punish them while thou wast with them, nor will He punish them while they seek forgiveness.” (8:33)

while they are seeking forgiveness.

And ward off the disasters of time through good deeds,

“In truth thy Lord destroyed not the townships tyrannously while their folk were doing right.” (11:117)

while its people are reformers.

Return to your Lord truly and sincerely,

just as the best of your Ummah returned,

those who combined righteous deeds

with the fear of Allah during their crises.

We seek refuge in Allah

from being among those who combine sins

with a sense of security from the plan of Allah.

And do not forget your brothers and those afflicted,

for they are in great distress

and severe trial.

For they have been struck by the earthquake,

displacement,

and the scarcity of food,

clothing, and medicine.

Among the ways to support them, O servants of Allah,

is supplication,

and what a great support and aid that is!

Then, carrying their burden,

remembering them,

and reciprocating the feelings of Islamic brotherhood and love.

Then, giving charity to them

through official channels

and trusted institutional organizations,

such as the Sahem platform,

to help the victims.

May Allah reward our leader and his Crown Prince

for this initiative.

We ask Allah to be gentle with our brothers.
