In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:03
Echoes from the pulpit.
0:07
A woman who debated with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
0:12
A sermon by the honorable Sheikh,
0:15
Khalid Ibn Abdullah al-Hammudi,
0:17
May Allah preserve him.
0:19
Praise be to Allah, the One, the Unique,
0:25
The Eternal Refuge,
0:28
Who neither begets nor is born.
0:30
“And there is none comparable unto Him.” (112:4)
0:32
Praise be to Allah.
0:34
Praise that cannot be bounded or enumerated.
0:36
O Allah, to You belongs all praise, our Lord, until You are pleased.
0:40
And to You belongs praise when You are pleased.
0:42
And to You belongs praise after You are pleased.
0:45
And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone,
0:49
With no partner.
0:51
“All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah; unto Him belongeth Sovereignty and unto Him belongeth praise, and He is Able to do all things.” (64:1)
0:53
And He is capable of all things.
0:55
Indeed, by Allah,
0:58
He is capable of all things.
1:02
So, O servant of Allah,
1:04
Do not be troubled if your burdens have grown heavy,
1:07
For the kindness of Allah in the heavens and earth is greater.
1:10
That which you hope for will come to you one day,
1:13
So do not be impatient for it, even if it is delayed.
1:17
And I bear witness that our master and our Prophet,
1:20
And our beloved, Muhammad, is the servant of Allah and His Messenger,
1:24
His chosen one and His intimate friend.
1:28
The chosen Messenger,
1:30
And the selected Prophet.
1:33
May the peace of Allah be upon you, O beacon of guidance,
1:36
As long as the days rejoice at your arrival.
1:39
Souls have called out to you in their longing,
1:42
And pens have been adorned with your hadith.
1:45
O Allah, send peace, blessings, and increase,
1:48
Upon Your servant, Messenger, and Prophet,
1:51
And Your beloved, Muhammad,
1:53
And upon his good and pure family,
1:57
And upon his noble and blessed Companions,
2:00
And grant them abundant peace,
2:02
Until the Day of Judgment.
2:04
Now then, O servants of Allah,
2:06
I advise you and myself to fear Allah.
2:09
“Then, when they have reached their term, take them back in kindness or part from them in kindness, and call to witness two just men among you, and keep your testimony upright for Allah. Whoso believeth in Allah and the Last Day is exhorted to act thus. And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, Allah will appoint a way out for him,” (65:2)
2:12
“And for such of your women as despair of menstruation, if ye doubt, their period (of waiting) shall be three months, along with those who have it not. And for those with child, their period shall be till they bring forth their burden. And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, He maketh his course easy for him.” (65:4)
2:16
O servants of Allah,
2:19
We begin today
2:22
With supplication and praise.
2:25
As for the supplication,
2:28
For those who performed Hajj,
2:30
And those who did not,
2:32
We say to the pilgrims:
2:34
May Allah accept your Hajj,
2:37
Reward your efforts,
2:39
Forgive your sins,
2:41
And answer your prayers.
2:43
And for those who did not perform Hajj,
2:45
We say to them:
2:47
May Allah accept your righteous deeds,
2:50
During those blessed days,
2:53
And place everything you offered
2:55
And did in the balance of your good deeds.
2:58
As for the praise,
3:00
It is for the government of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques,
3:03
And for everyone who served the pilgrims.
3:06
May Allah reward you,
3:08
Bless you,
3:10
Perpetuate this great blessing upon you,
3:14
And make this work
3:16
Purely for His noble sake,
3:20
And cause us all to benefit from it.
3:22
“The day when wealth and sons avail not (any man)” (26:88)
3:25
“Save him who bringeth unto Allah a whole heart.” (26:89)
3:28
As for our topic today, O servants of Allah,
3:31
We shall pause today with you,
3:33
In these precious minutes,
3:36
With one of the stories of the Qur'an.
3:40
This story
3:42
Caused the high heavens to tremble.
3:45
This story
3:47
Carries within it lessons and indications
3:51
That make the Muslim woman
3:54
Hold her head high,
3:56
With pride and dignity,
3:58
For the attention Islam has given her.
4:01
Let us listen, O servants of Allah,
4:04
Let us listen together to the story of this woman,
4:08
Whom Allah the Exalted immortalized
4:11
In His glorious Qur'an,
4:13
To be a lesson and an example,
4:15
Not just for women, no,
4:17
But for men and women alike.
4:21
Her story is
4:23
That her husband was a very old man
4:26
Whose temperament had become difficult.
4:28
She said: "He came to me one day,
4:30
And I argued with him about something, so he became angry,
4:33
And said: 'You are to me as the back of my mother.'"
4:36
He likened her to his mother.
4:38
And if a man likens his wife to his mother,
4:42
Intending prohibition,
4:44
Then his wife has become forbidden to him.
4:46
But after his temper cooled,
4:50
And his heart settled,
4:52
He wanted to have relations with her,
4:54
But she said to him: "No,
4:56
Do not come near me until I ask the Messenger of Allah."
4:59
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
5:02
"These are the limits of Allah,
5:05
And whoever transgresses the limits of Allah,
5:07
Has wronged himself."
5:09
Look, O servants of Allah,
5:11
At this woman,
5:13
Whose principle in life was:
5:16
"There is no obedience to a created being
5:18
In disobedience to the Creator."
5:20
Here is Aws
5:22
Ibn al-Samit,
5:24
Her husband,
5:25
And the person most beloved to her,
5:27
Demanding his right from her as a wife,
5:30
Yet she swears
5:31
Not to allow him access to her
5:34
Until she consults the Messenger of Allah,
5:37
Peace be upon him,
5:39
And asks him about this matter,
5:42
Because *zihar* (the declaration of a wife as one's mother) in the pre-Islamic era
5:44
Meant divorce,
5:46
And she did not know
5:48
Whether Islam had upheld what was practiced
5:50
In the pre-Islamic era,
5:52
Or if Islam had another ruling.
5:54
So she went to the Messenger of Allah,
5:57
Peace be upon him,
6:00
And listen to how she presented her case,
6:03
With a style
6:05
That the tongue is unable to express.
6:08
She said: "O Messenger of Allah,
6:10
Aws married me when I was young,
6:14
Desirable to him.
6:16
But when I grew old and my family died,
6:19
He declared *zihar* upon me,
6:21
Making me like his mother.
6:23
O Messenger of Allah,
6:25
I have small children by him;
6:28
If I leave them with him, they will be lost,
6:30
And if I take them with me, they will go hungry."
6:33
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to her:
6:37
"O Khawlah, I see you
6:40
As having become forbidden to him."
6:42
She said: "O Messenger of Allah,
6:44
Do not say that,
6:46
For I am alone,
6:48
I have no family other than him."
6:50
And the Prophet, peace be upon him,
6:52
Said: "O Khawlah,
6:54
I see you as having become forbidden to him."
6:57
She said: "O Messenger of Allah,
6:59
He did not utter a divorce,
7:01
He only uttered *zihar*,
7:03
Saying: 'You are to me as the back of my mother.'"
7:05
He, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
7:08
"O Khawlah, I see you as having become forbidden to him."
7:12
She said: "O Messenger of Allah,
7:14
He is my cousin and my husband,
7:17
And I have no family other than him."
7:19
He said: "I see you as having become forbidden to him."
7:22
So she began to debate with the Messenger of Allah,
7:24
While the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, kept saying:
7:28
"O Khawlah, I see you as having become forbidden to him."
7:33
So she wept and raised her hands to the sky,
7:36
And said: "O my Lord, O my Lord,
7:39
O Allah, I complain to You of my situation,
7:42
My loneliness, and my poverty before You,
7:45
O my Lord."
7:46
So, what do you think happened
7:49
After she turned to Allah,
7:51
And prayed, wept, and complained of her state to Allah?
7:56
Suddenly, the Trustworthy Gabriel, peace be upon him,
8:00
Fluttered with the wings of mercy
8:02
Upon the beloved Muhammad, peace be upon him,
8:06
With a Qur'an to be recited until the Day of Resurrection.
8:10
And listen to what our Lord, the Almighty and Majestic, said:
8:13
I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.
8:16
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
8:19
“Allah hath heard the saying of her that disputeth with thee (Muhammad) concerning her husband, and complaineth unto Allah. And Allah heareth your colloquy. Lo! Allah is Hearer, Knower.” (58:1)
8:26
And she complains to Allah,
8:28
And Allah hears your dialogue.
8:33
Indeed, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Seeing.
8:36
Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:
8:40
"O Khawlah, rejoice!"
8:42
She said: "Good news, O Messenger of Allah?"
8:45
And he recited the verses to her.
8:47
How great is Khawlah bint Tha'labah,
8:50
Regarding whom Allah revealed
8:52
A Qur'an to be recited until the Day of Resurrection,
8:56
And legislated for her sake an important aspect
9:00
Of the aspects of Islamic law,
9:03
Which raised the status of the Muslim woman,
9:06
And preserved her dignity,
9:08
For all time.
9:10
May Allah be pleased with her and grant her satisfaction,
9:12
And may Allah be pleased with all the Companions.
9:15
May Allah bless me and you with the Great Qur'an,
9:18
May Allah benefit me and you through the verses and the wise reminder contained therein.
9:22
I say what you hear, and I ask Allah for forgiveness.
9:24
For myself and for you, so seek His forgiveness.
9:26
How fortunate are those who seek forgiveness.
9:28
All praise is due to Allah.
9:32
I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah.
9:36
And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
9:40
To proceed, O servants of Allah:
9:43
Indeed, Surah al-Mujadilah, O servants of Allah,
9:46
Is a magnificent and wondrous surah.
9:48
Yes, the jinn marveled at the Qur'an.
9:52
They said, "Indeed, we have heard an amazing Qur'an."
9:55
Indeed, Surah al-Mujadilah, O servants of Allah,
9:58
There is not a single verse among its verses,
10:01
But that the majestic name, Allah,
10:05
Is present in every verse.
10:08
This is because this incident
10:10
Relates to the most sacred of matters,
10:13
And the most critical of issues,
10:16
Which is married life.
10:18
For when a home was on the verge of collapse,
10:21
The heavens trembled.
10:23
So where do the Muslims stand regarding this great lesson?
10:27
Where are those who are negligent in this regard,
10:30
Leading to the ruin of their families?
10:32
Where are they in relation to the hadith of the Prophet, peace be upon him?
10:36
"A believing man should not hate a believing woman;
10:39
If he dislikes a trait in her,
10:41
He will be pleased with another."
10:43
Narrated by Muslim.
10:44
We see today,
10:46
With great regret,
10:48
Those who let divorce roll off their tongues
10:50
As easily as water flows down from a mountain,
10:53
With complete ease.
10:55
And if he wants to swear an oath upon himself,
10:57
Or upon someone else,
10:59
He says, "I swear by divorce."
11:01
Then, when he breaks his oath,
11:03
He falls into distress,
11:05
And begins asking for solutions
11:07
That might save him from this predicament.
11:10
And some of them are overtaken by Satan,
11:13
Satan takes hold of them,
11:15
Just as he does during moments of anger,
11:17
So he divorces his wife three times,
11:19
All at once.
11:21
Indeed, some who do not fear Allah—
11:24
Yes, some who do not fear Allah—
11:26
When their gaze falls upon a woman,
11:29
Satan tempts them with her,
11:32
And their heart becomes attached to her,
11:34
Even though she is married.
11:36
So he attempts to corrupt her against her husband,
11:39
So that her husband might divorce her.
11:41
Whoever is in this state,
11:43
Upon him is a grave sin.
11:46
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
11:49
"He is not one of us who corrupts a woman against her husband,
11:52
Meaning, he ruins her relationship with her husband,
11:55
Or a slave against his master."
11:57
Narrated by Abu Dawud.
11:58
And some women, too,
12:00
Ask their husbands for a divorce
12:02
Without any valid reason.
12:04
The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
12:06
"Any woman
12:08
Who asks her husband for a divorce
12:10
Without a valid reason,
12:12
The fragrance of Paradise is forbidden to her."
12:15
Narrated by Ibn Majah.
12:17
Therefore, our duty, O servants of Allah,
12:19
Is to have taqwa of Allah within ourselves.
12:21
Our duty is to uphold marital rights.
12:24
And our duty is to adorn ourselves
12:27
With patience and deliberation in all matters.
12:29
Yes, beautify your lives, O servants of Allah,
12:33
With patience, for by Allah,
12:36
And by Allah, and by Allah,
12:38
The outcome of patience is praiseworthy,
12:42
In this world and the Hereafter.
12:44
O Allah, make us among the patient.
12:47
O Allah, make us among the patient.
12:49
Our Lord, grant us
12:51
From our spouses and our offspring
12:53
Comfort for our eyes,
12:54
And make us leaders for the righteous.
12:57
O Allah, rectify our wives,
12:59
And rectify our intentions,
13:01
And rectify our offspring,
13:03
And rectify our conditions,
13:05
And rectify the conditions of the Muslims everywhere.
13:08
O Allah, we ask You for Your pleasure and Paradise,
13:11
And we seek refuge in You from Your wrath and the Fire.
13:14
O Allah, grant us security in our homelands,
13:16
And rectify our leaders and those in authority over us.
13:19
O Allah, grant victory to our soldiers on the borders,
13:21
And grant victory to our oppressed brothers everywhere,
13:24
Above every land and beneath every sky.
13:27
O Allah, O Mighty One,
13:29
Just as You have gathered us upon this floor,
13:32
Gather us beneath Your Throne,
13:34
As brothers, loving one another,
13:36
Facing one another on thrones of dignity.
13:38
O Allah, have mercy on us with Your mercy,
13:40
Which encompasses all things.
13:42
Our Lord, forgive our fathers,
13:44
And our mothers,
13:46
And have mercy on them as they raised us when we were small.
13:48
My Lord, have mercy on them both as they raised me when I was small.
13:51
My Lord, have mercy on them both as they raised me when I was small.
13:54
O Allah, we love You,
13:56
So do not withhold Your bounty from us because of our sins.
13:59
Grant us a good end.
14:00
Take our souls while You are pleased with us.
14:03
Grant us repentance before death,
14:05
The testimony of faith at the time of death,
14:07
And Paradise and bliss after death.
14:09
O Allah, we have called upon You as You commanded us,
14:12
So answer us as You have promised us.
14:14
“Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)” (37:180)
14:17
And peace be upon the messengers.
14:19
And all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
