0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:03 Echoes from the pulpit.
0:07 Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah,
0:09 Allah will compensate him with something better than it.
0:12 A sermon by the honorable Sheikh,
0:14 Khalid Ibn Abdullah al-Hammudi,
0:17 May Allah preserve him.
0:18 Praise be to Allah, as we say,
0:26 And better than what we say.
0:30 Praise be to Allah, the Ever-Living, the Eternal, who neither dies nor passes away.
0:36 Praise be to Allah, who has wisdom in every matter,
0:40 Even if human intellects fall short of grasping it.
0:43 We praise Him, Blessed and Exalted is He, with a praise
0:47 That is connected to glorifying Him.
0:50 And I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
0:55 Who loves those who call upon Him and place their hope in Him.
0:59 I have placed my hope in You, my Lord, yearning,
1:03 That my hope may never be disappointed throughout my life.
1:08 And I bear witness that our master, our prophet, and our beloved, Muhammad, is the servant of Allah and His messenger,
1:16 His chosen one and His intimate friend.
1:19 Radiant of face,
1:21 Bright of countenance,
1:24 Sparkling with dazzling light,
1:28 And brilliant radiance,
1:30 And manifest splendor.
1:33 If you were to see him, you would see the sun rising.
1:38 Majestic and dignified,
1:41 His face sparkling like the moon on the night of the full moon.
1:47 The Messenger of Allah is the most precious thing we possess,
1:50 Dwelling in our hearts and our eyes.
1:54 Like a rain that came to the world and revived,
1:58 Hearts with the message, so we were guided,
2:02 To his lights, willingly and lovingly,
2:05 For the goodness the Lord brought to us.
2:09 Do not ask me who he is, for he is
2:13 The man of noble character and virtues, Muhammad.
2:17 O Allah, send prayers, peace, and increase blessings,
2:20 Upon Your servant, messenger, prophet, and beloved, Muhammad,
2:25 And upon his good and pure household,
2:29 And upon his noble and blessed Companions,
2:32 And grant him abundant peace until the Day of Judgment.
2:36 To proceed, O servants of Allah,
2:39 I advise you and myself to fear Allah.
2:42 “Then, when they have reached their term, take them back in kindness or part from them in kindness, and call to witness two just men among you, and keep your testimony upright for Allah. Whoso believeth in Allah and the Last Day is exhorted to act thus. And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, Allah will appoint a way out for him,” (65:2)
2:45 “And will provide for him from (a quarter) whence he hath no expectation. And whosoever putteth his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. Lo! Allah bringeth His command to pass. Allah hath set a measure for all things.” (65:3)
2:48 “And for such of your women as despair of menstruation, if ye doubt, their period (of waiting) shall be three months, along with those who have it not. And for those with child, their period shall be till they bring forth their burden. And whosoever keepeth his duty to Allah, He maketh his course easy for him.” (65:4)
2:54 O community of believers,
2:57 Our topic today is one that everyone needs.
3:01 It is that our human nature
3:04 Makes us prone to error.
3:07 Yes, every son of Adam is a sinner,
3:11 And the best of sinners are those who repent.
3:14 Who is there who has never done wrong?
3:17 And who is there who possesses only goodness?
3:19 In short, our topic
3:23 Is the lesson and meaning of this incident,
3:26 And the event you are about to hear.
3:30 So lend me your ears,
3:33 And reflect and ponder with your hearts.
3:36 Ibn Rajab, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned
3:39 In the biography of the judge Abu Bakr al-Ansari al-Bazzaz,
3:44 That he said:
3:45 "I was residing in Makkah, may Allah protect it,
3:49 When one day I was struck
3:52 By severe hunger,
3:54 And I could find nothing
3:58 To sustain my life.
4:01 So I went out looking for food,
4:04 But I found none.
4:05 Then I found a silk bag,
4:08 Tied with a silk cord as well.
4:12 He said: I took it,
4:14 And brought it to my house,
4:16 And untied it.
4:17 I found inside it a pearl necklace,
4:20 The likes of which I had never seen before.
4:23 He said: I tied it and returned it as it was,
4:27 Then I went out looking for food.
4:29 Suddenly, I saw an old man calling out and saying:
4:32 'Whoever has found our bag,
4:35 With such-and-such description,
4:37 Shall have five hundred gold dinars.'
4:41 He said: I said to myself,
4:43 'I am needy and hungry,
4:46 So I will take these dinars,
4:48 To benefit from them,
4:50 And return his bag to him.'
4:52 So I said to him, 'Come to me.'
4:55 He said: I took it,
4:56 And went with him to my house,
4:59 And I asked him about the mark of the bag,
5:03 And the mark of the pearls,
5:05 And the mark of the cord tied around it.
5:07 And it was exactly as he described.
5:10 He said: I took it out and handed it to him,
5:13 And he gave me the five hundred dinars,
5:16 The reward he had mentioned.
5:18 He said: I told him,
5:20 'It is my duty to return it to you,
5:23 And I will not take any reward for it.'
5:26 He said: 'You must take it,'
5:28 And he insisted upon me greatly.
5:30 He said: 'And I, by Allah, was in the greatest state of need.'
5:34 He said: So I said to him,
5:35 'By Allah, besides whom there is no god,
5:39 I will not take any reward for it from anyone,
5:42 Except from Allah.'
5:44 And I did not accept the dinars.
5:46 He said: So he left me and went on his way.
5:48 The old man returned to his country after the Hajj season.
5:52 As for what happened to Imam al-Bazzaz,
5:55 He said: I left Makkah,
5:58 And boarded a ship.
5:59 In the middle of its crashing waves and terrors,
6:03 The ship broke,
6:05 The people drowned,
6:06 And the wealth was lost.
6:08 He said: My Lord saved me,
6:11 As I remained on a piece of the ship,
6:14 Which carried me right and left,
6:16 I did not know where it was taking me.
6:20 I remained for a time in the sea,
6:22 Tossed by the waves,
6:24 From place to place,
6:26 Until it cast me onto an island,
6:29 Where there was an illiterate people,
6:32 Who could neither read nor write.
6:34 He said: I sat in their mosque,
6:36 And stood up to recite.
6:38 He said: The people of the mosque had no sooner seen me,
6:41 Than they gathered around me.
6:43 There was no one left on the island who did not say,
6:46 'Teach me the Qur'an.'
6:48 He said: So I taught them the Qur'an,
6:50 And I received much good,
6:53 And I received a great deal of good,
6:55 As a result of that.
6:57 He said: Then I saw in that mosque,
7:00 A torn copy of the Qur'an,
7:03 So I took its pages to mend them.
7:06 They said, 'Do you know how to write?'
7:08 I said, 'Yes.'
7:09 They said, 'Teach us writing.'
7:11 I said, 'There is no harm in that.'
7:12 So they gathered and brought their children,
7:15 And their youth,
7:16 And I began teaching them,
7:18 And I received great good from that.
7:21 They became fond of him,
7:22 And said to him after that,
7:24 They said, wanting him to stay with them,
7:28 'We have an orphaned girl,
7:31 Who possesses some worldly wealth,
7:33 And we want to marry you to her,
7:36 And you shall stay with us on this island.'
7:39 He said: I refused,
7:40 But they insisted,
7:42 And compelled me,
7:43 So I could not resist their persistence and insistence,
7:47 Except to answer their request.
7:50 So they prepared her for me,
7:52 And brought her to me,
7:54 Her male relatives escorted her,
7:56 And I sat with them.
7:57 And as I looked at her,
8:00 Behold, that necklace,
8:03 Which I had seen in Makkah,
8:05 The very same one,
8:06 Was hanging around her neck.
8:09 I was astonished,
8:10 And I had no other concern at that moment,
8:13 But to look at this necklace.
8:15 Her relatives said,
8:17 'O Sheikh,
8:18 You have broken the heart of this orphan,
8:21 You do not look at her,
8:22 But you only look at that necklace.'
8:25 He said: I told them,
8:27 'This necklace has a story.'
8:29 They said, 'And what is it?'
8:31 He said: So I told it to them.
8:34 They shouted,
8:35 And clamored with the declaration of Allah's oneness and greatness,
8:37 Until their voices reached the corners of the island.
8:40 I said, 'Subhan Allah,
8:42 What is the matter with you?'
8:43 They said, 'The old man,
8:45 Who took the necklace from you in Makkah,
8:48 Is the father of this girl.
8:50 He used to say upon his return from Hajj,
8:53 And he would always repeat,
8:55 "By Allah,
8:56 I have not found on the face of the earth a Muslim like this man,
9:00 Who returned the necklace to me in Makkah.
9:03 O Allah, unite me with him,
9:05 So that I may marry him to my daughter."
9:08 That man passed away,
9:10 And Allah fulfilled his prayer after his death,
9:13 And Allah married you to his daughter.'
9:15 He says: So I remained with her for a period of time,
9:18 And she was the best of wives,
9:21 And I was blessed with two children from her.
9:23 Then she passed away, may Allah have mercy upon her.
9:26 So I inherited the necklace, along with my two children.
9:29 He said: Then the two children passed away.
9:32 One after the other.
9:34 So I inherited the necklace from both of them.
9:36 He said: I sold it for one hundred thousand dinars.
9:39 And after some time, it happens
9:41 that someone says: "This is from the remnants
9:45 of the price of that necklace."
9:46 May Allah’s mercy be upon them all.
9:48 Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah,
9:50 Allah will compensate him with something better than it.
9:53 This is what we desire, O servants of Allah.
9:55 And this is our topic.
9:57 Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah,
10:00 Allah will compensate him with something better than it.
10:02 Indeed, desires have authority over the soul,
10:05 and a hold,
10:07 and a firm grasp upon the hearts.
10:09 Thus, abandoning them is difficult,
10:10 and finding freedom from them is arduous.
10:13 But whoever fears Allah, He will suffice him,
10:16 and whoever seeks His help, He will aid him.
10:19 “And will provide for him from (a quarter) whence he hath no expectation. And whosoever putteth his trust in Allah, He will suffice him. Lo! Allah bringeth His command to pass. Allah hath set a measure for all things.” (65:3)
10:22 The hardship is only felt
10:24 in abandoning familiar habits and customs
10:27 by one who leaves them for other than the sake of Allah.
10:29 As for the one who leaves them sincerely for the sake of Allah,
10:33 he will find no hardship in abandoning them,
10:36 except at the very first moment,
10:38 to test whether he is truthful or lying in his abandonment.
10:42 If he perseveres through that hardship for a little while,
10:46 it will transform,
10:47 and turn into delight.
10:49 And the more the desire for the forbidden increases,
10:52 and the soul yearns to commit it,
10:55 the greater the reward for abandoning it becomes,
10:58 and the recompense is multiplied
11:00 for struggling against the soul to find freedom from it.
11:03 So, O servants of Allah,
11:05 hold fast to this and act upon it,
11:07 and be certain of its reward.
11:10 Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah,
11:12 Allah will compensate him with something better than it.
11:15 I ask Allah to compensate us all with every good
11:19 in this world and the Hereafter.
11:21 O Allah, answer our prayer.
11:22 May Allah bless me and you through the Great Qur'an,
11:25 and benefit me and you with the verses and the wise reminder it contains.
11:29 I say what you hear, and I seek Allah's forgiveness for myself and for you.
11:32 So seek His forgiveness,
11:33 for He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.
11:39 All praise is due to Allah.
11:40 I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
11:43 and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.
11:46 May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
11:49 To proceed, O servants of Allah:
11:51 Whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah, as we mentioned,
11:55 Allah will compensate him with something better than it.
11:57 And the compensation from Allah
11:59 comes in various forms.
12:02 The most sublime and greatest thing a person is compensated with
12:06 is intimacy with Allah,
12:08 His love, the tranquility of the heart through His remembrance,
12:12 its strength and vitality,
12:14 and being pleased with one's Lord,
12:16 along with the reward he encounters in this world,
12:20 and the perfect reward that awaits him in the Hereafter.
12:25 And here for you, O servants of Allah,
12:27 here for you, in brief,
12:29 are some examples
12:31 of certain matters
12:32 which, if a person leaves them for the sake of Allah,
12:36 Allah will compensate him with something better than them.
12:38 Firstly:
12:39 Abandoning the act of begging from people,
12:41 placing hope in them,
12:43 and debasing oneself before them.
12:45 Whoever attaches his hope to Allah alone,
12:49 Allah will compensate him with something better than what he left.
12:52 He will grant him the happiness of the heart,
12:54 self-respect,
12:56 and independence from the creation.
12:58 Whoever stops objecting to the decree of Allah,
13:01 and submits to his Lord in all his affairs,
13:04 Allah will grant him contentment and certainty,
13:06 and will show him of a good outcome
13:09 that he could never have imagined.
13:11 Whoever stops chasing after this world,
13:14 Allah will gather his affairs for him,
13:16 place his richness in his heart,
13:18 and the world will come to him while it is submissive.
13:21 Whoever stops cheating in buying and selling,
13:24 the people's trust in him will increase,
13:26 and their demand for his goods will grow.
13:29 Whoever leaves usury
13:31 and ill-gotten gains,
13:32 Allah will bless his provision,
13:35 and open for him the doors of goodness and blessings.
13:38 Whoever stops looking at the forbidden,
13:40 Allah will compensate him
13:42 with true insight,
13:44 light, and clarity,
13:46 and a delight he finds in his heart,
13:48 and intimacy and great affection with his wife.
13:52 Whoever leaves smoking for the sake of Allah,
13:55 Allah will compensate him with health
13:57 and true happiness,
13:59 not that fleeting, illusory happiness.
14:03 Whoever stops procrastinating in paying off debts,
14:06 Allah will aid him,
14:08 and settle them on his behalf;
14:09 indeed, it becomes a right upon Allah to aid him.
14:13 Whoever stops severing ties of kinship,
14:15 and instead maintains them,
14:16 shows kindness to them,
14:18 and fears Allah regarding them,
14:20 Allah will expand his provision for him,
14:22 and prolong his legacy.
14:24 And he will continue to have a supporter from Allah
14:27 as long as he maintains that connection.
14:30 Servants of Allah,
14:31 the warnings and evils are many,
14:34 but the good is more,
14:35 by the permission of Allah.
14:37 And all praise is due to Allah.
14:38 So whoever leaves sin and evil for the sake of Allah,
14:41 Allah will compensate him,
14:43 and replace it with something immensely better.
14:46 Some might say:
14:47 "How do I know what is evil,
14:49 and what is the sign of a sin so that I may leave it,
14:52 and Allah compensates me with something better?"
14:55 We say as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said:
14:58 "Sin is that which wavers in your soul,
15:00 and you dislike that people should find out about it."
15:03 This is a principle;
15:05 proceed upon it with the blessing of Allah,
15:08 and remember that whoever leaves something for the sake of Allah,
15:11 Allah will compensate him with something better than it.
15:13 I ask Allah to compensate us all
15:16 with every good in this world and the Hereafter.
15:19 O Allah, suffice us with Your lawful provisions against Your forbidden ones,
15:21 and enrich us by Your bounty, independent of all others.
15:24 O Allah, bless for us what remains of Sha'ban,
15:27 and let us reach Ramadan
15:29 while we are in health and wellness,
15:31 and in security, faith, and safety.
15:33 O Allah, O Hearer of supplications,
15:35 O Vast in giving,
15:37 forgive our sins,
15:39 conceal our faults,
15:40 accept our repentance,
15:41 and seal our deeds with righteousness.
15:44 O Allah, forgive our fathers
15:46 and our mothers,
15:47 and our brothers and sisters,
15:49 and all the Muslims.
15:50 O Lord, whoever among them is alive,
15:53 grant them enjoyment of health and wellness in Your obedience.
15:56 And whoever among them is dead,
15:58 O Allah, reward their good deeds with further goodness,
16:02 and their evil deeds with pardon and forgiveness.
16:04 O Allah, rectify our intentions and our offspring,
16:07 grant us security in our homelands,
16:09 and rectify our leaders and those in authority over us.
16:12 Grant victory to our soldiers on the borders,
16:14 and grant victory to our oppressed brothers everywhere.
16:17 And rectify the affairs of the Muslims in every place.
16:20 O Allah, forgive the one who built this mosque.
16:23 O Allah, gather us and those we love in the Gardens of Bliss.
16:26 O Allah, just as You have gathered us upon these carpets,
16:29 gather us beneath Your Throne,
16:31 as loving brothers,
16:33 upon thrones facing one another.
16:35 O Allah, purify our hearts from hypocrisy,
16:37 our deeds from showing off,
16:39 our tongues from lying,
16:41 and our actions from treachery.
16:43 Indeed, You know the treachery of the eyes
16:45 and what the hearts conceal.
16:47 “Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)” (37:180)
16:50 Peace be upon the messengers,
16:51 and all praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
