I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah alone, having no partner,

Our topic today concerns an important matter

into which many people fall.

However, I shall preface it with this introduction:

A group were once discussing among themselves

the accounts of Ma‘n Ibn Za’idah,

and stories of his generosity, admiring his character

for his abundant forbearance and gentleness.

But they exaggerated in this greatly,

so a Bedouin stood up

and took it upon himself to make him angry.

They disapproved of his intent,
2:27
but promised him a hundred camels if he succeeded.

The Bedouin went to a camel and slaughtered it,

draped himself in its hide, and wore pieces of it as footwear,

with the raw side facing outward.

He entered upon Ma‘n and began to recite:

"Do you remember when your blanket was like the skin of a sheep?

And now you are wearing the skin of a camel?"

Ma‘n replied, "I remember, and I do not forget it."

The Bedouin said,

"Glory be to Him who gave you kingship

and taught you how to sit upon the throne."

Ma‘n said, "Indeed, Allah honors whom He wills

and humiliates whom He wills."

"I am not a Muslim if I live for an age

without greeting the Prince, Ma‘n."

"Peace is better,

and there is no harm in omitting it."

"I shall depart from the lands you inhabit,

even if time is unjust to the poor."

"If you stay near us, you are welcome to reside,

and if you depart from us, may you be accompanied by safety."

"Then grant me, O son of our people, some wealth,

for I have resolved to travel."

to lighten the hardships of his travels."

"I asked Allah to let you live for an age,

for you have no equal in the wilderness.

From you comes true generosity and favor,

and the flow of your hands is like the overflowing sea."

"We gave him two thousand for insulting us,

so let him be given four thousand for praising us."

The Bedouin said,

"May my father and my soul be sacrificed for you, O Prince,

for you are unique in your forbearance,

and the rarity of your age in generosity.

I was regarding your qualities

between believing and disbelieving,

but when I tested you, the rumors seemed small,

and the strength of certainty dispelled the weakness of doubt.

Nothing drove me to what I did

except for a hundred camels

promised to me if I could make you angry."

The Prince said to him,

"There is no blame upon you,"

and he gifted him two hundred camels,

Because of it, many wives have been widowed,

and many sons and daughters have been orphaned.

In its presence, blood is shed,

and because of it, souls are lost.

One leaves the scene

with people either killed or killers.

It enters a home

that was filled with happiness and joy,

and in moments, turns it into

sorrow and grief.

the father becomes a prisoner of anxiety and addiction,

Because of it, loved ones are separated,

and friends are divided.

Through it, relationships are demolished

that were built over years,

and a rational man is transformed

by it into one of the madmen.

the greatness of the advice of the Trustworthy Advisor becomes clear,

who said to him, "Advise me."

He said, advising him,

"Do not get angry."

and from it arises an ugly demeanor,

heinous words,

despicable actions,

and wretched character.

It stirs envy, hatred,

hostility,

and the desire to take revenge on the one who caused the anger

by every possible means,

wishing evil upon him,

gloating over his misfortunes,

feeling distressed by his joy,

hiding his virtues,

and exposing his faults,

and other such evil matters.

This proves

that anger

is the collection of all evil,

and that guarding against it

is the collection of all good.

Whoever contemplates his biography,

peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

while searching for the secret of that

great praise

from the Lord of the Great Throne

in His saying, the Exalted:

“And lo! thou art of a tremendous nature.” (68:4)

he will find forbearance manifest

in his character and his situations.

Anas Ibn Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

"I was walking with the Messenger of Allah,

and he was wearing a Najrani cloak

with a thick border.

A Bedouin caught up with him,

and pulled his cloak

with a violent tug.

I looked at the side of the Messenger of Allah's neck,

and the border of the cloak had left a mark on it

from the intensity of his tug.

Then he said, 'O Muhammad,

may Allah send blessings upon Muhammad,

he said, 'O Muhammad,

order for me some of the wealth of Allah that you have.'

The Messenger of Allah turned to him,

He laughed, then ordered a gift to be given to him.

“Verily in the messenger of Allah ye have a good example for him who looketh unto Allah and the Last Day, and remembereth Allah much.” (33:21)

“And when Moses returned unto his people, angry and grieved, he said: Evil is that (course) which ye took after I had left you. Would ye hasten on the judgment of your Lord? And he cast down the tablets, and he seized his brother by the head, dragging him toward him. He said: Son of my mother! Lo! the folk did judge me weak and almost killed me. Oh, make not mine enemies to triumph over me and place me not among the evil-doers.” (7:150)

"Knowledge is only attained through learning,

and forbearance is only attained through practicing it."

Whoever seeks good will be given it,

and whoever guards against evil will be protected from it.

We seek Your forgiveness for every sin and transgression.

For You are the Trust for those who rely upon You,

and the Protection for those who entrust their affairs to You.

and reward them on our behalf with the best of rewards.

and their bad deeds with pardon and forgiveness.

rectify our leaders and those in authority over us,

grant victory to our soldiers on the borders,
