0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:03 Echoes from the Pulpit.
0:06 The Name of Allah, As-Salam (The Source of Peace).
0:09 A sermon by the honorable Sheikh
0:11 Khalid Ibn 'Abdullah al-Humudi,
0:14 may Allah preserve him.
0:15 Praise be to Allah, the Sovereign, the Holy, the Source of Peace,
0:22 the Possessor of Majesty and Honor.
0:26 I praise Him for His immense bounties,
0:29 and for His abundant and magnificent favors,
0:33 the greatest of which is the blessing of Islam.
0:37 To You belongs all praise, as befits the majesty of Your Countenance
0:40 and the greatness of Your dominion.
0:43 Praise that fills Your heavens and fills Your earth,
0:46 and fills all that lies between them,
0:49 and fills whatever else You will thereafter.
0:52 You are the One worthy of praise and glory;
0:55 the most truthful thing a servant can say,
0:57 and we are all Your servants.
0:59 O Allah, to You is all praise until You are pleased,
1:02 to You is all praise when You are pleased,
1:04 and to You is all praise after You are pleased.
1:08 I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, alone, without partner,
1:13 “All that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth glorifieth Allah; unto Him belongeth Sovereignty and unto Him belongeth praise, and He is Able to do all things.” (64:1)
1:19 the Reliever of anxiety,
1:21 the Remover of distress,
1:23 the Responder to the call of the desperate.
1:26 Say to the soul, if it has lost its hope,
1:30 and despair has weakened its strength:
1:34 "Trust in Allah; how many souls have feared
1:37 the world, yet its Creator has sufficed them."
1:42 I bear witness that our master, our Prophet, and our beloved, Muhammad, is the servant of Allah and His Messenger,
1:50 His chosen one and His intimate friend.
1:53 He would recite the Qur'an,
1:55 and his eyes would overflow with tears.
1:59 He would stand in prayer at night until his feet became swollen.
2:04 Woe to those who strayed from his path and disobeyed him,
2:08 and honor to those who clung to his Sunnah and sought refuge in his protection.
2:14 Pebbles glorified Allah in his palm,
2:18 and the trunk of the palm tree groaned when he left it and turned away.
2:26 So he touched it with his compassionate hands and comforted it.
2:31 O you who hope for the best intercession,
2:35 send blessings and peace upon Ahmad.
2:39 May the Possessor of Majesty send blessings and peace upon him,
2:43 as long as a pilgrim calls out or a pilgrim in ihram completes his rites.
2:47 And upon his kin, whose excellence is established,
2:51 and upon his Companions, who were resolute,
2:55 who were generous and exalted,
2:57 who shone and protected,
2:59 who adorned and guided.
3:01 They were like stars in all six directions.
3:05 And upon the Tabi'un who followed them in righteousness, for they
3:09 transmitted what they had preserved from them.
3:13 O Allah, send blessings, peace, and increase in grace
3:16 upon Your servant, Your Messenger, Your Prophet, and Your beloved, Muhammad,
3:21 and upon his family and his Companions,
3:24 and whoever is guided by his guidance,
3:26 follows his Sunnah, and treads his path,
3:29 and grant them abundant peace until the Day of Judgment.
3:34 To proceed, O servants of Allah,
3:36 I advise you and myself to fear Allah.
3:39 “O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah with right observance, and die not save as those who have surrendered (unto Him)” (3:102)
3:44 “O ye who believe! Observe your duty to Allah with right observance, and die not save as those who have surrendered (unto Him)” (3:102)
3:47 O community of believers,
3:50 among the greatest means and causes for attaining piety
3:54 is the servant’s knowledge of his Lord.
3:57 For whoever knows Allah,
4:00 fears Him, loves Him, and hopes in Him,
4:04 relies upon Him, turns to Him in repentance,
4:08 longs to meet Him,
4:11 and finds comfort in His nearness, His majesty, and His greatness.
4:16 From the knowledge of Allah, the Almighty, spring the fountains of all goodness,
4:22 and from it flow the best of acts of worship
4:26 and the most perfect spiritual stations. Therefore,
4:29 since the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
4:33 was the most perfect of the Ummah in his knowledge of Allah,
4:37 he was the most pious and the most fearful of Him.
4:40 He, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
4:43 "By Allah,
4:45 I am the most fearful of Allah among you and the most conscious of Him."
4:49 Agreed upon.
4:52 Through the knowledge of Allah, the Exalted,
4:54 hearts are brought to life,
4:56 souls are purified,
4:58 they turn toward Allah, the Almighty,
5:01 and become preoccupied with Him.
5:03 For there is nothing sweeter to those of intellect and discernment,
5:07 nor more delicious, nor more pleasant, nor more blissful,
5:11 than the knowledge of Allah, the Exalted.
5:14 Yet, the fullness of this knowledge
5:17 and its perfection
5:18 is attained by seeing Allah, the Exalted.
5:21 For hearing about something is not like seeing it with one's own eyes.
5:24 If the servants were to witness their Lord, the Exalted,
5:28 and see His majesty, His beauty, and His perfection,
5:33 their worship, love, and reverence for Him
5:37 would reach a different state entirely.
5:39 Allah has said
5:41 in a hadith qudsi
5:43 regarding those who gathered to remember Him:
5:46 "How would it be if they had seen Me?"
5:48 The angels would say:
5:50 "If they had seen You,
5:52 they would have been even more intense in their worship of You,
5:54 more intense in their praise and glorification of You,
5:58 and more frequent in their exaltation of You."
6:01 Narrated by al-Bukhari.
6:02 However,
6:04 since seeing Him, the Exalted,
6:07 is impossible in this worldly abode,
6:09 as it does not correspond
6:11 to the capacity, strength, or state of the creation,
6:16 Allah has opened for His servants
6:18 another path
6:20 by which they may come to know Him.
6:23 He mentioned, the Exalted, in His Book
6:26 and upon the tongue of His Messenger,
6:28 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
6:30 many of His names and attributes,
6:34 and what is due to Him,
6:35 and what He is worthy of.
6:37 Thus, the goal of attaining knowledge of Allah
6:40 lies in the hands of those who contemplate the Book of Allah
6:44 and the names and attributes contained therein.
6:47 For the names and attributes of Allah, the Almighty,
6:50 and the knowledge of them,
6:51 and affirming them,
6:53 and the heart’s attachment to them,
6:55 and witnessing them,
6:57 is the beginning of the path of servitude,
7:00 its middle,
7:01 and its ultimate end.
7:03 Knowledge of the names and attributes of Allah, the Almighty,
7:06 is the spirit
7:08 by which the wayfarers travel
7:11 toward Allah, the Exalted in His majesty.
7:13 Allah sent His messengers
7:16 to make Him known through His names and attributes.
7:20 They came making Him known,
7:22 and calling people to Him.
7:24 Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said
7:27 in explaining the mission of the messengers:
7:30 "They made the Lord, to whom they called, known
7:33 through His names, His attributes, and His actions,
7:37 in a detailed manner.
7:40 He hears the voices of His creation,
7:42 sees their actions and movements,
7:45 and witnesses their inner selves
7:47 just as He witnesses their outer selves.
7:50 He commands and forbids,
7:52 He is pleased and He is angry.
7:53 He laughs at their despair
7:56 and the nearness of their relief.
7:58 He answers the call of the desperate,
8:01 He aids the distressed,
8:03 He helps the needy,
8:05 He mends the broken-hearted,
8:07 He enriches the poor,
8:09 He causes death and gives life,
8:11 He withholds and He gives.
8:13 “He giveth wisdom unto whom He will, and he unto whom wisdom is given, he truly hath received abundant good. But none remember except men of understanding.” (2:269)
8:15 He is the Sovereign of all dominion;
8:17 He gives dominion to whom He wills,
8:19 and He strips dominion from whom He wills.
8:21 He honors whom He wills,
8:23 and He humbles whom He wills.
8:25 In His hand is all good,
8:27 and He is over all things competent."
8:30 “All that are in the heavens and the earth entreat Him. Every day He exerciseth (universal) power.” (55:29)
8:32 He forgives a sin,
8:34 He relieves a distress,
8:36 He frees the captive,
8:38 He grants victory to the oppressed,
8:39 He crushes the oppressor,
8:42 He shows mercy to the poor,
8:44 He aids the distressed,
8:46 He drives destinies to their appointed times,
8:49 and He conducts them according to His system.
8:52 This is the purpose of the call,
8:55 and the essence of the message.
8:57 Therefore, O servants of Allah,
8:59 we shall pause today
9:01 with a name of Allah,
9:03 the Exalted in His majesty:
9:05 the name As-Salam.
9:07 As-Salam.
9:08 A name of His, the Exalted,
9:10 encompassing all His attributes,
9:13 indicating the transcendence of the Lord,
9:16 His holiness,
9:18 and His freedom from every defect,
9:20 and His exaltation
9:22 above that which does not befit His majesty,
9:24 His perfection,
9:26 and His greatness.
9:27 As-Salam:
9:28 He is free from every flaw.
9:30 As-Salam:
9:31 He is free from every deficiency.
9:33 He is the Source of Peace, free from all faults
9:36 and shortcomings,
9:37 due to His perfection in His Essence,
9:39 His perfection in His names,
9:41 His attributes and His actions.
9:43 The Almighty says:
9:45 He is Allah,
9:47 “He is Allah, than Whom there is no other Allah, the Sovereign Lord, the Holy One, Peace, the Keeper of Faith, the Guardian, the Majestic, the Compeller, the Superb. Glorified be Allah from all that they ascribe as partner (unto Him).” (59:23)
9:51 The Holy, the Source of Peace (al-Salam),
9:53 The Source of Peace,
9:55 The Guardian of Faith, the All-Dominant,
9:57 The Almighty, the Compeller, the Supreme in Greatness.
10:00 Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him.
10:03 His, the Almighty’s, entitlement
10:05 to this name
10:07 is more perfect than the entitlement of anything else to which it is applied.
10:11 This
10:13 is the reality of the transcendence (tanzih)
10:15 with which Allah has transcended Himself,
10:18 and with which His Messenger has transcended Him,
10:21 peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
10:23 He is the Source of Peace (al-Salam)
10:24 from having companions or children.
10:27 He is the Source of Peace
10:28 from having an equal or a peer,
10:30 or a namesake or a likeness.
10:33 And He is the Source of Peace from having a rival or a partner.
10:35 His life, may He be glorified and exalted,
10:38 is a peace from death,
10:40 a peace from drowsiness,
10:42 and a peace from sleep.
10:44 He is ever-watchful over His creation,
10:46 a peace from fatigue,
10:48 a peace from incapacity,
10:50 and a peace from weariness.
10:52 His knowledge is a peace from ignorance,
10:55 from distraction, and from forgetfulness.
10:57 His words are justice
10:59 and truth,
11:00 a peace from falsehood and injustice.
11:02 All His attributes are a peace
11:05 from anything that contradicts their perfection
11:07 or suggests any deficiency in them.
11:10 Just as He is the Source of Peace in His Essence,
11:13 and in His names and attributes,
11:15 so too, from Him, the Exalted,
11:17 comes all peace and security.
11:19 From Him, peace is sought,
11:21 and whoever seeks peace
11:23 from anyone else will not find it.
11:26 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
11:30 used to embody this name
11:32 and the attribute of peace it encompasses.
11:35 Thus, upon finishing a prescribed prayer,
11:38 he would seek forgiveness three times,
11:40 and say:
11:41 "O Allah, You are the Source of Peace,
11:44 and from You comes peace.
11:45 Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor."
11:49 Narrated by Muslim.
11:50 He, the Almighty, grants peace
11:52 to His allies from His punishment,
11:54 and He grants all of creation peace from the injustice
11:57 which He is far above.
11:59 The Almighty says:
12:01 “Lo! Allah wrongeth not even of the weight of an ant; and if there is a good deed, He will double it and will give (the doer) from His presence an immense reward.” (4:40)
12:04 And because He is the Source of Peace,
12:06 and from Him comes all peace,
12:08 it is not said:
12:10 "Peace be upon Allah,"
12:12 for Allah is Himself the Source of Peace.
12:14 Narrated by al-Bukhari.
12:16 He granted peace to His prophets and messengers
12:19 because of the perfection of what they said, free from deficiency and fault.
12:23 The Almighty says:
12:24 “Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)” (37:180)
12:28 "And peace be upon the messengers."
12:30 He decreed peace
12:32 for His righteous servants,
12:34 for the Almighty said:
12:36 "Say, 'Praise be to Allah,
12:38 and peace be upon His servants whom He has chosen.'"
12:42 He singled out whom He willed of His creation by His grace
12:45 with peace upon them in the worlds,
12:47 such as Noah, peace be upon him.
12:49 He said:
12:50 “Peace be unto Noah among the peoples!” (37:79)
12:54 And peace be upon Abraham,
12:56 and Moses,
12:57 and Aaron,
12:58 and Elias.
13:00 Allah honored His prophet Yahya (John)
13:03 and singled him out with peace
13:05 in three places:
13:07 the most desolate
13:08 moments for the creation:
13:11 “Peace on him the day he was born, and the day he dieth and the day he shall be raised alive!” (19:15)
13:13 the day he dies,
13:15 and the day he is raised to life.
13:17 Allah commanded the believers to send peace
13:20 upon our Prophet Muhammad,
13:22 peace and blessings be upon him.
13:25 The Almighty said:
13:26 "O you who have believed,
13:29 invoke blessings upon him
13:30 and ask [Allah to grant him] peace."
13:32 Allah and Gabriel sent peace
13:35 upon Khadijah,
13:36 may Allah be pleased with her,
13:38 for her unique service
13:40 to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
13:43 and her support for him.
13:44 Gabriel came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
13:48 and said, "O Messenger of Allah,
13:50 this is Khadijah
13:52 who has come to you;
13:53 she has with her a vessel
13:55 containing stew,
13:57 or food,
13:58 or drink.
13:59 When she comes to you,
14:01 convey to her greetings of peace from her Lord,
14:04 the Almighty,
14:05 and from me."
14:06 Agreed upon.
14:08 Just as Gabriel, peace be upon him, sent peace
14:11 upon 'A'ishah,
14:13 for her knowledge and her intellect.
14:15 He, peace and blessings be upon him, said:
14:18 "O 'A'ish,
14:19 this is Gabriel
14:21 conveying greetings of peace to you."
14:23 Agreed upon.
14:25 Every person praying in their tashahhud
14:28 sends peace upon the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
14:31 and upon the righteous:
14:33 "Peace be upon you, O Prophet,
14:36 and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
14:38 Peace be upon us,
14:40 and upon the righteous servants of Allah."
14:43 Agreed upon.
14:45 Whoever enters a house,
14:46 it is prescribed for him to greet its inhabitants with peace,
14:49 for it is a greeting
14:51 that is blessed and good.
14:54 The Almighty says:
14:55 "But when you enter houses,
14:58 greet one another with a greeting from Allah,
15:00 meaning: let some of you greet others,
15:03 “No blame is there upon the blind nor any blame upon the lame nor any blame upon the sick nor on yourselves if ye eat from your houses, or the houses of your fathers, or the houses of your mothers, or the houses of your brothers, or the houses of your sisters, or the houses of your fathers' brothers, or the houses of your fathers' sisters, or the houses of your mothers' brothers, or the houses of your mothers' sisters, or (from that) whereof ye hold the keys, or (from the house) of a friend. No sin shall it be for you whether ye eat together or apart. But when ye enter houses, salute one another with a greeting from Allah, blessed and sweet. Thus Allah maketh clear His revelations for you, that haply ye may understand.” (24:61)
15:05 blessed and good."
15:07 Al-Qurtubi, may Allah have mercy on him, said:
15:10 "He described it as blessed
15:12 because it contains supplication
15:13 and the seeking
15:15 of the affection of the one being greeted."
15:17 He also described it as good
15:20 because the one who hears it
15:22 finds it pleasant.
15:23 The Muslim is commanded to spread peace among the creation
15:27 by his words and his deeds.
15:29 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:
15:31 "The Muslim
15:32 is one from whose tongue and hand
15:35 the Muslims are safe."
15:37 Narrated by al-Bukhari.
15:38 Allah praised
15:40 those who respond to the ignorant with peace
15:43 and meet evil with good.
15:46 The Almighty says:
15:47 "And when the ignorant address them,
15:50 they say [words of] peace."
15:52 Peace, O servants of Allah,
15:54 is both security and supplication.
15:56 Among the beauty of Islam
15:59 and its perfection
16:00 is that it extended this
16:02 to both the living and the dead.
16:04 No one is more in need of supplication
16:07 than those who have departed this life.
16:09 It was the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
16:12 when he came to the graveyard,
16:14 to say:
16:15 "Peace be upon you,
16:18 O abode of a believing people."
16:20 Narrated by Muslim.
16:21 O Allah, grant us peace,
16:23 and protect us,
16:25 and place us in Your sanctuary, Your security, and Your protection.
16:28 O Allah, You are the Source of Peace,
16:31 and from You comes peace.
16:32 Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.
16:35 May Allah bless me and you with the Great Qur'an,
16:38 and benefit me and you with the verses and the wise reminder it contains.
16:42 I say what you hear, and I seek Allah's forgiveness for me and for you, so seek His forgiveness,
16:46 for He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
16:51 Praise be to Allah,
16:53 and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,
16:55 and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
17:01 To proceed, O servants of Allah:
17:03 Knowledge of the names and attributes of Allah
17:07 is the most noble of sciences.
17:09 Through it, one attains the love of Allah,
17:11 His veneration, the fear of Him, and hope in Him.
17:15 The more a servant's knowledge of this increases,
17:18 the greater his devotion to Allah becomes,
17:21 and the more he adheres to His commands and prohibitions.
17:24 Allah, the Almighty,
17:27 He loves His Names and His Attributes.
17:30 He loves for the effects and implications of these to be manifest in His creation.
17:34 Therefore, magnify Allah, O servants of Allah.
17:37 Magnify Allah as He truly deserves to be magnified.
17:40 And accord Him the reverence due to Him.
17:42 Do not look at the insignificance of the sin.
17:45 Rather, look at the greatness of the One whom you have disobeyed.
17:50 O Allah, You are As-Salam (The Source of Peace).
17:52 From You comes peace.
17:54 Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.
17:56 O Allah, grant us security and keep us safe from every evil.
18:00 Protect us with Your protection.
18:01 And guard us with Your care.
18:03 O Allah, forgive our sins.
18:05 Conceal our faults.
18:06 Accept our repentance and seal our deeds with righteousness.
18:10 O Allah, grant us security in our homelands.
18:12 Reform our leaders and those in authority over us.
18:15 Grant victory to our soldiers at the borders.
18:17 And grant victory to our oppressed brothers everywhere.
18:20 O Allah, grant us success in every deed that You love and are pleased with.
18:23 Adorn us with Your beautiful veil of concealment.
18:25 And beneath that veil, place righteous deeds that You are pleased with.
18:29 Grant us a good end and take our souls while You are pleased with us.
18:33 O Allah, we ask You for repentance before death.
18:36 For martyrdom at the time of death.
18:39 And for Paradise and its bliss after death.
18:41 O Allah, rectify our intentions and our offspring.
18:44 O Allah, O Possessor of Majesty and Honor.
18:46 Just as You have gathered us upon these carpets.
18:49 Gather us beneath Your Throne.
18:51 As brothers who love one another, upon thrones facing one another.
18:55 “Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)” (37:180)
18:57 And peace be upon the messengers.
19:00 And praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
