0:09 A sermon by the honorable Sheikh,

0:11 Khalid Ibn ‘Abdullah al-Hammudi,

0:14 may Allah preserve him.

0:15 Known for his virtue,

0:18 and described by his goodness, generosity, and bounty.

0:22 We bear witness that our master, our prophet,

0:25 and our beloved, Muhammad, is the servant of Allah and His messenger,

0:29 His chosen one, and His intimate friend.

0:32 We bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah,

0:35 who never strayed,

0:37 never faltered,

0:39 never was humiliated,

0:41 never grew weary, never transgressed, and never flagged.

0:45 He never strayed,

0:47 for wisdom guided him,

0:49 and Allah supported and directed him.

0:52 He never faltered,

0:54 for Allah was his guide,

0:56 and Jibril spoke to him and called upon him.

1:00 He never was humiliated,

1:02 for honor was his companion and victory his ally.

1:06 He never transgressed,

1:08 for he was a man of integrity, protection, and piety.

1:13 He never grew weary or flagged,

1:16 for he possessed a noble resolve.

1:19 May the Lord send blessings upon you from His highness,

1:23 as do the angels throughout all His heavens,

1:26 and the believers, having answered His command,

1:30 racing with longing to His call.

1:33 Send blessings and peace upon him so that you may gain,

1:37 tenfold, for your Lord is vast in His bounty.

1:41 O Lord, send blessings upon him as long as the light shines,

1:44 and nations rejoice in the overflow of his radiance.

1:48 O Allah, send blessings, peace, and increase,

1:51 upon Your servant, Your messenger, Your prophet, and Your beloved, Muhammad,

1:56 and upon his family and his Companions,

1:58 and grant them abundant peace until the Day of Judgment.

2:02 To proceed, O servants of Allah,

2:04 I advise you and myself to fear Allah,

2:07 for it is the command of Allah to us and to those before us.

2:11 “Unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth. And We charged those who received the Scripture before you, and (We charge) you, that ye keep your duty toward Allah. And if ye disbelieve, lo! unto Allah belongeth whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, and Allah is ever Absolute, Owner of Praise.” (4:131)

2:17 O Lord, O Lord,

2:19 make us all among Your pious servants,

2:22 and among Your successful party.

2:24 O Allah, answer our prayer.

2:26 O community of believers,

2:28 we begin with that which is best,

2:30 and the best of speech is the speech of Allah.

2:33 Allah, the Exalted in His majesty, says,

2:36 after seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan:

2:39 “Messengers indeed have been denied before thee, and they were patient under the denial and the persecution till Our succour reached them. There is none to alter the decisions of Allah. Already there hath reached thee (somewhat) of the tidings of the messengers (We sent before).” (6:34)

2:48 "...until Our victory came to them."

2:57 The Sunnah of Allah, the Exalted, has always been

3:00 that the prophets and those who follow their path

3:04 are the most severely tested of people.

3:06 Patience is the refuge of the prophets,

3:10 and those who face trials,

3:12 in every time and place.

3:15 Our topic, O servants of Allah,

3:18 is this act of worship,

3:20 which has no limit or count before Allah.

3:24 Our topic is patience,

3:26 which is the restraining of the soul

3:29 to what the Sharia requires,

3:32 in our minds,

3:33 our tongues,

3:35 and our limbs.

3:37 As for our minds,

3:39 we are certain of their inadequacy

3:41 to encompass the wisdom of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic,

3:45 in what He has decreed and ordained.

3:47 He, the Glorified, says:

3:48 "But perhaps you hate a thing

3:51 and it is good for you."

3:52 “Warfare is ordained for you, though it is hateful unto you; but it may happen that ye hate a thing which is good for you, and it may happen that ye love a thing which is bad for you. Allah knoweth, ye know not.” (2:216)

3:55 "...and it is evil for you."

3:57 Allah knows,

3:59 and you do not know.

4:01 As for our tongues,

4:03 we do not exceed

4:05 what the Truth has informed us

4:07 regarding His allies,

4:09 who, when struck by calamity, say:

4:11 “Who say, when a misfortune striketh them: Lo! we are Allah's and lo! unto Him we are returning.” (2:156)

4:15 "Indeed we belong to Allah,

4:17 and indeed to Him we will return."

4:20 And regarding our limbs,

4:22 we must hold fast to patience,

4:24 and not display discontent.

4:26 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

4:29 "He is not one of us

4:31 who strikes his cheeks, tears his clothes,

4:34 and calls out with the call of the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah)."

4:37 Narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim.

4:39 There is a question, O servants of Allah:

4:42 Are we in need of patience?

4:45 We say: Yes,

4:47 because this world

4:49 is a house of trials and worries,

4:51 and anxieties and sorrows,

4:53 that melt the heart

4:54 and weaken the body.

4:56 Ya'qub (Jacob), peace be upon him,

4:58 lost his sight

5:00 from the intensity of his weeping over the loss of Yusuf (Joseph), peace be upon him.

5:04 He found no recourse but to complain to Allah,

5:07 and patience

5:08 was his refuge and shelter.

5:11 "So patience is most fitting."

5:12 “And they came with false blood on his shirt. He said: Nay, but your minds have beguiled you into something. (My course is) comely patience. And Allah it is Whose help is to be sought in that (predicament) which ye describe.” (12:18)

5:16 I ask,

5:17 ‘Ali Ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him:

5:20 "O Commander of the Faithful,

5:22 what is the mightiest of the armies of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic?"

5:26 He replied: "The mountains,

5:28 yet iron cuts the mountains,

5:30 so iron is stronger.

5:32 Fire melts iron,

5:35 so fire is stronger.

5:37 Water extinguishes fire,

5:40 so water is stronger.

5:41 Clouds carry water,

5:44 so clouds are stronger.

5:46 The wind toys with the clouds,

5:48 so the wind is stronger.

5:50 A human being shields himself from the wind

5:52 with his garment and his hand,

5:54 so the human is stronger.

5:56 Sleep overcomes the human,

5:59 so sleep is stronger.

6:01 Worry overcomes sleep,

6:03 so worry is stronger.

6:05 Therefore, the mightiest of the armies of Allah, the Almighty and Majestic,

6:10 is worry."

6:11 Secondly,

6:12 we are in need of patience

6:14 because the will of Allah is inevitable.

6:18 Whatever He wills comes to pass,

6:19 whatever Allah wills happens,

6:21 and whatever He does not will, does not happen.

6:24 Who are you, O servant of Allah?

6:26 Are you anything more than a speck in His universe?

6:29 Who are you

6:30 to object to the decree and command of Allah?

6:34 So be content and be patient,

6:36 and seek your reward from Allah.

6:38 As for the types of patience,

6:40 they are three.

6:41 The first of them:

6:43 Patience in obedience.

6:45 Our connection with Allah, O servants of Allah,

6:48 is not a connection of days and seasons,

6:51 like those who do not know Allah except in Ramadan.

6:54 When Ramadan ends,

6:56 they return to the sins they were committing before.

7:00 Our goal is to meet Allah

7:03 upon the word: "There is no god but Allah,

7:06 Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

7:08 “And serve thy Lord till the Inevitable cometh unto thee.” (15:99)

7:11 Meaning death.

7:12 He, the Glorified, said:

7:14 "Lord of the heavens and the earth

7:16 and whatever is between them,

7:18 so worship Him and have patience for His worship."

7:21 “Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them! Therefor, worship thou Him and be thou steadfast in His service. Knowest thou one that can be named along with Him?” (19:65)

7:24 The more a servant increases in patience in obedience,

7:29 the more he increases in love for it,

7:31 and longing for it.

7:32 One of the righteous

7:34 would have his bed spread for him after the Isha prayer,

7:38 and he would place his hand upon it and say:

7:41 "By Allah, you are soft,

7:43 but the bed of Paradise is softer than you."

7:46 Then he would stand to pray

7:48 until the dawn broke.

7:50 Even ‘Umar was asked,

7:52 may Allah be pleased with ‘Umar,

7:54 and with all the Companions,

7:57 he was asked, may Allah be pleased with him:

7:59 "What is the most beloved thing to your soul?"

8:01 He replied: "Striking with the sword,

8:03 and fasting in the summer."

8:05 And the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

8:08 says in the authentic hadith:

8:11 "Shall I not guide you

8:12 to that by which Allah wipes away sins

8:15 and raises ranks?

8:17 Performing wudu (ablution) thoroughly despite difficulties,

8:20 taking many steps to the mosques,

8:23 and waiting for the next prayer after the current one.

8:25 That is the true ribat (steadfastness)."

8:29 Secondly:

8:31 Patience in refraining from disobedience.

8:33 So protect yourself, O servant of Allah,

8:35 protect yourself from everything that brings you near to sin.

8:38 In your sight:

8:40 "The eyes commit adultery,

8:41 and their adultery is the gaze."

8:43 And in your tongue:

8:45 "Restrain this for yourself,"

8:47 and he pointed to his tongue.

8:49 "O Mu'adh,

8:51 And what will cast people into the Fire upon their faces

8:54 but the harvest of their tongues?

8:57 And regarding your stomach,

8:58 let nothing unlawful enter it.

9:00 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

9:03 "Allah is Pure,

9:05 and He accepts only that which is pure."

9:08 And regarding your private parts,

9:09 do not commit adultery.

9:11 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

9:13 "Whoever guarantees for me what is between his jaws

9:16 and what is between his legs,

9:18 I guarantee Paradise for him."

9:20 Patience, too,

9:22 is the third of these,

9:24 specifically patience in the face of calamities.

9:25 The Muslim, O servants of Allah,

9:27 is certain of the preordainment of what Allah has written for His servants.

9:32 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

9:35 "Allah ordained the measures of all creation

9:38 fifty thousand years before He created the heavens and the earth."

9:41 Fifty thousand years.

9:43 Consider Ayyub, peace be upon him;

9:46 he was tested in his own person,

9:47 his children, and his wealth.

9:49 His wife asked him—

9:51 that is, she asked him to pray to Allah to remove the affliction,

9:53 even though he was a Prophet

9:55 whose supplications were answered.

9:57 He said to her:

9:59 "How long did we live in well-being?"

10:01 She replied:

10:02 "Sixty years."

10:04 He said to her:

10:05 "I am ashamed

10:07 to ask my Lord for relief

10:09 when we have not yet endured in affliction

10:11 as long as we enjoyed in well-being."

10:13 For health, O servants of Allah,

10:15 health lasts for years,

10:17 while illness lasts for days.

10:19 Well-being lasts for years,

10:21 while affliction lasts for hours.

10:24 All of it passes,

10:25 and becomes a thing of the past.

10:28 As the poet said:

10:30 "O you who are burdened by worry,

10:31 know that worry will be relieved.

10:33 Rejoice in goodness,

10:35 for the One who removes it is Allah.

10:37 Many eyes have stayed awake,

10:39 and many eyes have slept,

10:40 over matters that may or may not come to pass.

10:43 He who sufficed you against yesterday's worries

10:46 will suffice you for what is to come tomorrow."

10:49 O Allah, relieve the worries of the distressed,

10:52 and ease the anguish of those in agony,

10:54 and answer our prayers, O Lord of the worlds.

10:57 O Allah, amen.

10:59 May Allah bless me and you through the Great Qur'an,

11:01 and benefit me and you with the verses and wise reminders it contains.

11:05 I say what you hear, and I ask Allah for forgiveness for me and for you, so seek His forgiveness;

11:09 indeed, He is the Forgiving, the Merciful.

11:13 Praise be to Allah.

11:15 Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.

11:17 And the ultimate outcome belongs to the righteous.

11:19 I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

11:21 the Judge of the Day of Judgment.

11:23 And I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger, the truthful and trustworthy.

11:27 May the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, his family, and all his Companions.

11:31 And now, O servants of Allah,

11:34 we must be certain that the ultimate outcome belongs to the patient and the righteous.

11:40 Consider Yusuf, peace be upon him:

11:43 his brothers conspired against him, yet he was patient.

11:47 He was cast into a well, yet he was patient.

11:50 He was sold as a slave, though he was a free man, yet he was patient.

11:54 He worked as a servant in a palace,

11:56 though he was of noble birth, yet he was patient.

11:59 He was falsely accused of indecency, though he was chaste,

12:02 yet he was patient; he was imprisoned, though he was innocent,

12:05 and yet he was patient.

12:06 Consequently, Allah raised him to a high station,

12:10 placing the provisions and needs of the people under his care.

12:16 Eventually, his brothers came to him, miserable and in need—

12:20 the same ones who had said before:

12:22 "Kill Yusuf,

12:24 or cast him out into some land."

12:25 They were the ones who said to him that day:

12:28 "O Aziz,

12:30 adversity has touched us and our family,

12:32 and we have brought meager goods.

12:35 So fulfill for us the measure and be charitable to us."

12:38 “And when they came (again) before him (Joseph) they said: O ruler! Misfortune hath touched us and our folk, and we bring but poor merchandise, so fill for us the measure and be charitable unto us. Lo! Allah will requite the charitable,” (12:88)

12:41 Know that there is no patience

12:44 except through certainty in Allah,

12:46 His wisdom, and His justice,

12:48 and in the Last Day

12:50 and the just reward and reckoning it holds.

12:54 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

12:57 "There is no believing servant

12:59 who is struck by a calamity

13:01 and says as Allah the Almighty commanded:

13:03 'Indeed we belong to Allah,

13:05 and indeed to Him we will return.

13:08 O Allah, reward me in my calamity

13:10 and replace it for me with something better,'

13:13 but that Allah will do exactly that for him."

13:16 Narrated by Ibn Majah with a sound chain of narration.

13:18 Among the transmitted supplications is:

13:20 "O Allah, I ask You for such certainty

13:24 as will make the calamities of this world easy for me to bear."

13:27 O servants of Allah,

13:29 do not forget that piety

13:32 stands only upon the pillar of patience.

13:36 Patience is the most beautiful garment you can wear;

13:40 so be patient,

13:41 for the reward is only for those who endure through time.

13:45 Indeed, victory comes with patience,

13:47 relief comes with distress,

13:49 and indeed, with hardship comes ease.

13:51 Patience is a treasure among the treasures of goodness

13:54 that Allah does not grant

13:56 except to a servant who is noble in His sight.

13:59 Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

14:02 "We found the best of our life through patience."

14:05 The fruit of success, O servants of Allah,

14:07 the fruit of success

14:09 comes from long-suffering patience.

14:12 So be patient, and encourage patience,

14:15 and remain steadfast, and fear Allah,

14:17 that you may succeed.

14:19 O Allah, grant us patience, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer.

14:21 O Allah, make us among the patient.

14:24 O Allah, Possessor of Majesty and Honor,

14:26 relieve the worries of the distressed,

14:28 and ease the anguish of those in agony,

14:30 and settle the debts of the indebted,

14:32 and heal our sick and the sick of the Muslims,

14:35 and have mercy on our dead and the dead of the Muslims,

14:38 by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

14:40 O Allah, we ask You for Your pleasure and Paradise,

14:43 and we seek refuge in You from Your wrath and the Fire.

14:46 O Allah, grant us security in our homelands,

14:48 and rectify our leaders and those in authority over us.

14:51 O Allah, grant victory to our soldiers on the borders,

14:53 and grant victory to our oppressed brothers everywhere,

14:57 and rectify the conditions of our Muslim brothers everywhere,

15:00 by Your mercy, O Most Merciful of the merciful.

15:03 “Glorified be thy Lord, the Lord of Majesty, from that which they attribute (unto Him)” (37:180)

15:06 And peace be upon the messengers,

15:07 and praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
