0:56 Regarding this surah,

0:58 I have three reflections. The first reflection

1:00 concerns what has been narrated about the circumstances of its revelation.

1:02 It was mentioned that 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him,

1:06 said: "While we were with the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in a cave at Mina,

1:10 'By the emissary winds sent forth' (al-Mursalat) was revealed to him."

1:13 The word "al-Mursalat" was omitted here—

1:15 "in it,"

1:16 meaning in this cave.

1:18 "And indeed, he was reciting it,

1:20 while I was taking it directly from his mouth,

1:22 and his mouth was still moist with it..."

1:24 to the end of the hadith.

1:26 The takeaway here,

1:28 and the point I wish to dwell upon,

1:30 is the sheer precision

1:32 in receiving and transmitting the Qur'an.

1:34 For our religion

1:36 is one built upon oral reception

1:38 and absolute precision in that transmission.

1:40 Ponder how Ibn Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him,

1:42 remembers

1:44 the exact place where

1:46 this surah was revealed, with complete accuracy,

1:48 and remembers

1:50 his own state and that of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

1:52 as well as the exact moment

1:54 of the recitation

1:56 of these verses.

1:58 Indeed, this instills in us profound confidence

2:00 in this religion,

2:02 which has been preserved and handed down to us

2:04 with a transmission unlike

2:06 that of any other religion

2:08 on earth,

2:10 or indeed any body of knowledge on earth.

2:12 So all praise is due to Allah, first and last.

2:14 Whoever traces

2:16 instances like this will find astonishing

2:18 and marvelous details in the books of hadith,

2:20 the Seerah, and biographical accounts.

2:22 Up to this very day, the Qur'an continues

2:24 to be received through direct, oral transmission from teacher to student,

2:26 by the grace of Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He.

2:28 The second reflection

2:30 relates to His saying, Exalted is He:

2:32 "Woe, that Day, to the deniers."

2:34 For this verse

2:36 is repeated, as is readily apparent, in this surah

2:38 many times.

2:40 Whatever is repeated in the speech of Allah,

2:42 Glorified and Exalted is He,

2:44 must possess immense significance.

2:46 However, when something is repeated

2:48 and we fail to give it due heed,

2:50 its impact upon our souls weakens,

2:52 leading to an outcome

2:54 entirely contrary to what was intended;

2:56 instead of that repetition serving

2:58 as a prompt for greater mindfulness,

3:00 it turns into a cause

3:02 for skimming through quickly without reflection.

3:04 Therefore,

3:06 each of us should increase

3:08 in vigilance and care.

3:10 Matters that are reiterated in the Shari'ah

3:12 carry great importance

3:14 and profound wisdom,

3:16 and we should pay closer attention to them

3:18 lest their impact upon our souls diminish

3:20 due to mere familiarity and repetition.

3:22 The same applies

3:24 here in this surah,

3:26 and to this specific verse:

3:28 "Woe, that Day, to the deniers," for it is repeated

3:30 across many places.

3:32 One ought to consult books of Tafsir

3:34 regarding the reason for its repeated occurrence,

3:36 and one must reflect,

3:38 not rushing past it heedlessly,

3:40 but rather granting it each time

3:42 a measure of deliberate attention

3:44 and contemplating its words:

3:46 "Woe, that Day,

3:48 to the deniers."

3:50 Doing so leaves a tremendous impact upon the heart.

3:52 The third reflection

3:54 is that this surah is predominantly characterized

3:56 by themes of warning and intimidation,

3:58 far more than good tidings,

4:00 in contrast to Surah al-Insan,

4:02 which we previously reviewed.

4:04 Therefore,

4:06 whoever reads the Qur'an

4:08 and continuously completes its recitations

4:10 time after time

4:12 will attain balance,

4:14 kept upright through the uprightness of the Qur'an,

4:16 far removed from exaggeration

4:18 where excess is unwarranted.

4:20 One who stays close to the Qur'an

4:22 lives between fear and hope,

4:24 encouragement and deterrence.

4:26 Even so,

4:28 one needs to ponder why encouragement abounds

4:30 in one surah

4:32 while deterrence predominates in another,

4:34 thereby learning from the wisdom of this Wise Book.

4:36 And may the peace and blessings of Allah

4:38 be upon the Messenger of Allah,

4:40 upon his family and Companions,

4:42 and upon whoever follows his guidance.

4:44 All praise is due to Allah, first and last, outwardly and inwardly.
