In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.

Treasures of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah).
0:06
The beginning of the call.
0:10
Revelation was granted to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
0:14
and he was given the glad tidings of prophethood.
0:17
Then the revelation ceased for a period,
0:20
after which it returned to him a second time following three years.
0:25
This phase is known as
0:27
the period of prophethood (Nubuwwah)
0:29
prior to the full apostolic mission (Risalah).
0:31
And the Prophet (peace be upon him) began
0:33
inviting those closest to him
0:35
to the religion of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted.
0:37
The very first
0:39
to embrace Islam with the Prophet (peace be upon him)
0:41
among women
0:43
was Khadijah;
0:44
among freed slaves,
0:46
Zayd Ibn Harithah;
0:48
among young boys,
0:50
'Ali Ibn Abi Talib;
0:52
among free men,
0:54
Abu Bakr al-Siddiq;
0:56
and among slaves,
0:58
Bilal Ibn Rabah.
1:00
On the authority of Hammam Ibn al-Harith,
1:02
from 'Ammar Ibn Yasir,
1:04
who said:
1:06
"I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
1:08
when there was no one with him except five slaves,
1:10
two women,
1:12
and Abu Bakr."
1:14
And there embraced Islam through Abu Bakr
1:16
al-Siddiq:
1:18
al-Zubayr Ibn al-'Awwam,
1:20
'Uthman Ibn 'Affan,
1:22
Sa'd Ibn Abi
1:24
Waqqas,
1:26
and 'Abd al-Rahman Ibn 'Awf,
1:28
may Allah be pleased with them.
1:30
And on the authority of 'Amr Ibn 'Abasah al-Sulami
1:32
(may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
1:34
"I came to the Messenger of Allah
1:36
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
1:38
at the very beginning of his mission while he was in Mecca,
1:40
and he was at that time
1:42
in hiding. So I said:
1:44
'What are you?'
1:46
He replied: 'I am a prophet.'
1:48
I asked: 'And what is a prophet?'
1:50
He said:
1:52
'Allah has sent me.'
1:54
I asked: 'Ah,
1:56
Allah has sent you?'
1:58
He said: 'Yes.'
2:00
I asked: 'With what has He sent you?'
2:02
He replied: 'That you worship Allah
2:04
alone without any partner,
2:06
destroy the idols,
2:08
and uphold the ties of kinship.'
2:10
He said: I said:
2:12
'How excellent is that which He has sent you with!
2:14
And who has followed you in this?'
2:16
He replied:
2:18
'A free man and a slave.'"
2:20
He said:
2:22
"Later, 'Amr used to say:
2:24
'I certainly saw myself
2:26
when I was one-fourth of Islam.'"
2:28
He said: "So I embraced Islam,
2:30
and said: 'Shall I follow you,
2:32
O Messenger of Allah?'
2:34
He said: 'No,
2:36
rather return to your people,
2:38
and when you hear that I have
2:40
openly triumphed, then come to me.'"
2:42
And on the authority of Ibn Mas'ud
2:44
(may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
2:46
"I was a young lad,
2:48
tending the sheep of 'Uqbah
2:50
Ibn Abi Mu'ayt in Mecca,
2:52
when the Messenger of Allah
2:54
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
2:56
and Abu Bakr came upon me,
2:58
having fled in secret from the polytheists.
3:00
He said: 'O young boy,
3:02
do you have any
3:04
milk to give us a drink?'
3:06
I said: 'I am entrusted with them,
3:08
so I cannot give you any drink.'
3:10
He said:
3:12
'Do you have a young ewe
3:14
that has not yet mated with a ram?'
3:16
I said: 'Yes.'
3:18
So I brought it to them both,
3:20
and Abu Bakr held it fast,
3:22
while the Messenger of Allah
3:24
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
3:26
stroked the udder and supplicated.
3:28
The udder filled with milk,
3:30
and Abu Bakr brought him a hollowed-out
3:32
rock in which he milked it.
3:34
Then he drank,
3:36
he and Abu Bakr, and then I drank.
3:38
Then he said to the udder:
3:40
'Shrink,'
3:42
and it shrank back to how it was.
3:44
Sometime later,
3:46
I came to the Messenger of Allah
3:48
(peace be upon him) and said:
3:50
'Teach me some of this
3:52
speech!' So he said,
3:54
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:
3:56
'You are a boy destined to be taught.'
3:58
And I learned directly from his mouth
4:00
seventy surahs,
4:02
in which no one
4:04
can dispute with me."

Treasures of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah):
4:08
The conversion to Islam of Abu—
4:12
Abu Dharr al-Ghifari,
4:14
may Allah be pleased with him.
4:17
Among those who embraced Islam at the very
4:19
beginning was Abu Dharr al-Ghifari,
4:21
and his story is as
4:23
follows:
4:25
Abu Dharr said: "We departed
4:27
from our tribe, Ghifar,
4:29
who used to treat the sacred month as permissible.
4:31
I set out along with my brother
4:33
Unays and our mother,
4:35
and we stayed with a maternal uncle of ours.
4:37
Our uncle treated us honorably
4:39
and was good to us,
4:41
but his people envied us and said to him:
4:43
'Whenever you leave your family,
4:45
Unays goes in to them behind your back'—
4:47
implying that he
4:49
was betraying him with his family.
4:51
So our uncle came
4:53
and repeated to us what had been said to him,
4:55
meaning he disclosed and divulged what
4:57
was told to him.
4:59
So I said to him: 'As for your past
5:01
kindness, you have tarnished it,
5:03
and we shall never join together
5:05
with you after this.'
5:07
So we brought our small herd of camels close,
5:09
loaded our belongings onto them,
5:11
left our uncle,
5:13
and departed.
5:15
Our uncle covered his head with his garment
5:17
and began to weep.
5:19
We traveled until we reached
5:21
the vicinity of Mecca.
5:23
Then Unays competed in a poetic contest wagering our herd of camels
5:25
against an equal number.
5:27
They went to a soothsayer who judged in favor of Unays,
5:29
so Unays came back to us
5:31
with our herd and an equal number with it."
5:33
That is to say, Unays
5:35
was a poet
5:37
who arrived at a place near Mecca,
5:39
and rivaled people
5:41
in poetry with a wager of a she-camel
5:43
for a she-camel.
5:45
Then they sought judgment from the soothsayer,
5:47
who ruled that Unays
5:49
was the better poet, so he won both camels.
5:51
Abu Dharr said
5:53
to the narrator from him, 'Abdullah
5:55
Ibn al-Samit: "And I used to pray,
5:57
O nephew, before
5:59
I met the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon
6:01
him) by three years."
6:03
I asked—
6:05
'Abdullah Ibn al-Samit—:
6:07
"For whom?" He said: "For Allah."
6:09
I asked:
6:11
"And which direction did you face?"
6:13
He said: "I faced wherever
6:15
my Lord directed me.
6:17
I would pray in the evening
6:19
until, toward the end of the night,
6:21
I would collapse like a discarded garment
6:23
until the sun rose high over me."
6:25
Abu Dharr said:
6:27
"Then my brother Unays
6:29
said to us: 'I have some business
6:31
in Mecca, so look after matters for me
6:33
with my mother until I go
6:35
and return.'
6:37
So Unays set off until he reached Mecca,
6:39
but he was delayed in returning—
6:41
meaning he took a long time.
6:43
Then he returned, so I said: 'What did you do?'
6:45
He said:
6:47
'I met a man in Mecca who follows your religion,
6:49
"claiming that Allah
6:51
has sent him."
6:53
Abu Dharr said: "I asked,
6:55
'So what do the people say?'
6:57
He replied: 'They say
6:59
he is a poet, a soothsayer,
7:01
and a sorcerer.'
7:03
But I have heard the words of the soothsayers,
7:05
and his speech is nothing like theirs;
7:07
and I compared his words
7:09
to the meters of poetry,
7:11
and no one's tongue can rightly claim
7:13
that it is poetry.
7:15
By Allah, he is truly truthful,
7:17
and they are indeed liars!"
7:19
Abu Dharr said:
7:21
"I said to Unays,
7:23
'Look after my affairs here until I go
7:25
and see for myself.'
7:27
So I came to Mecca and approached a man who seemed vulnerable among them—
7:29
meaning, I went to a man
7:31
whom I deemed weak among them—
7:33
and I asked,
7:35
'Where is this man whom you call
7:37
the Sabian?'
7:39
He pointed at me and shouted,
7:41
'Here is the Sabian!'
7:43
Thereupon, the people of the valley fell upon me
7:45
with clods of earth and bones,
7:47
until I collapsed unconscious
7:49
from the severe beating.
7:51
When I finally stood up,
7:53
I was covered in blood, like a red sacrificial stone altar.
7:55
So I went to the Well of Zamzam,
7:57
washed the blood off myself,
7:59
and drank of its water.
8:01
I stayed there, O nephew, for thirty
8:03
days and nights.
8:05
I had no food
8:07
except Zamzam water,
8:09
yet I grew fat until the folds of my belly
8:11
creased,
8:13
and I never felt
8:15
any pangs of hunger in my stomach.
8:17
Then, one bright, moonlit night
8:19
while the people of Mecca were asleep,
8:21
deep slumber overcame them,
8:23
meaning their ears were sealed in sleep,
8:25
so no one was circumambulating the House
8:27
except two women supplicating
8:29
the idols Isaf and Na'ilah.
8:31
As they passed by me
8:33
during their circumambulation,
8:35
I said,
8:37
'Marry one to the other!'
8:39
But they did not desist
8:41
from their invocations.
8:43
He said: When they came by me again,
8:45
I said something explicitly vulgar about the idols,
8:47
comparing them to mere wood,
8:49
without using any euphemism.
8:51
So the two women hurried away wailing
8:53
and crying out,
8:55
'If only there were someone here
8:57
from our men!'
8:59
Then the Messenger of Allah,
9:01
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
9:03
and Abu Bakr met them as they were descending.
9:05
He asked: 'What is the matter with you two?'
9:07
They replied,
9:09
'The Sabian is between the Ka'bah
9:11
and its drapes!'
9:13
The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, asked,
9:15
'What did he say to you?'
9:17
They said,
9:19
'He spoke words that filled our mouths with shame!'
9:21
Then the Messenger of Allah,
9:23
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, approached
9:25
until he touched the Black Stone,
9:27
and circumambulated the House
9:29
along with his companion,
9:31
and then offered prayer.
9:33
When he finished his prayer,
9:35
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
9:37
I was the very first person
9:39
to greet him with the greeting of Islam.
9:41
I said to him,
9:43
'Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah!'
9:45
He replied,
9:47
'And upon you, and the mercy of Allah.'
9:49
Then he asked,
9:51
'Who are you?'
9:53
I replied, 'From the tribe of Ghifar.'
9:55
He said: He lowered his hand
9:57
and placed his fingers upon his forehead.
9:59
I thought to myself,
10:01
'He disliked that I belong
10:03
to Ghifar.'
10:05
So I moved to take his hand from his forehead,
10:07
but his companion restrained me—
10:09
and he knew him better
10:11
than I did. Then the Prophet raised
10:13
his head and asked,
10:15
'How long have you been here?'
10:17
I replied, 'I have been here
10:19
for thirty
10:21
days and nights.'
10:23
He asked, 'And who has been feeding you?'
10:25
I said,
10:27
'I had no food
10:29
except Zamzam water,
10:31
yet I grew fat until the folds of my belly
10:33
creased, and I do not
10:35
feel any pangs of hunger in my stomach.'
10:37
Thereupon the Prophet,
10:39
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
10:41
'Indeed, it is blessed;
10:43
it is truly a nourishing food.'
10:45
Then Abu Bakr said,
10:47
'O Messenger of Allah,
10:49
grant me permission to host him tonight.'
10:51
So the Messenger of Allah,
10:53
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
10:55
and Abu Bakr set off,
10:57
and I went along with them.
10:59
Abu Bakr unlocked a door
11:01
and began taking handfuls of raisins from
11:03
al-Ta'if for us,
11:05
and that was the very first food
11:07
I ate there.
11:09
Then I remained for as long as I remained,
11:11
after which I came to the Messenger of Allah,
11:13
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
11:15
and he said,
11:17
'I have been shown the land of palm trees to which I shall emigrate;
11:19
I see it
11:21
to be none other than Yathrib.
11:23
Will you convey the message
11:25
from me to your people?
11:27
Perhaps Allah will benefit them through you
11:29
and reward you for them.'
11:31
So I went back to Unays,
11:33
and he asked me, 'What have you done?'
11:35
I said, 'I have
11:37
embraced Islam and believed.'
11:39
He said,
11:41
'I have no aversion to your religion;
11:43
I too have embraced Islam and believed.'
11:45
Then we went to our mother,
11:47
and she said,
11:49
'I have no aversion to your religion;
11:51
I too have embraced Islam and believed.'
11:53
So we packed our belongings
11:55
and came to our people,
11:57
the tribe of Ghifar,
11:59
and half of them embraced Islam.
12:01
They were led in prayer by Imah ibn Rahadah
12:03
al-Ghifari,
12:05
who was their chieftain.
12:07
And the other half said,
12:09
'When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arrives in
12:11
Medina, we will embrace Islam.'
12:13
When the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arrived in
12:15
Medina,
12:17
the remaining half
12:19
embraced Islam.
12:21
Then the tribe of Aslam came
12:23
and said, 'O Messenger of Allah,
12:25
our brethren have embraced Islam, so we embrace Islam
12:27
upon the same terms as they did.'
12:29
And so they embraced Islam.
12:31
Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
12:33
'Ghifar—may Allah forgive
12:35
them;
12:37
and Aslam—may Allah grant them peace.'
12:39
Treasures of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah):
12:41
The conversion to Islam of al-Tufayl
12:44
ibn 'Amr al-Dawsi,
12:46
may Allah be pleased with him.
12:48
Al-Tufayl was
12:52
an obeyed chieftain and a nobleman
12:54
among the tribe of Daws, and Daws
12:56
was in Yemen. He had
12:58
arrived in Mecca, where the nobles of Quraysh
13:00
gathered around him
13:02
and warned him against the Messenger of Allah,
13:04
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
13:06
They forbade him from meeting with him
13:08
or listening to his words.
13:10
Al-Tufayl ibn 'Amr said:
13:12
'By Allah, they continued pressing
13:14
me until I resolved
13:16
not to hear anything
13:18
from him nor speak to him,
13:20
to the point that when I went to the Sacred Mosque,
13:22
I stuffed my ears with cotton
13:24
out of fear.'
13:26
'So I went early in the morning to the Mosque,
13:28
"And there was the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
13:30
standing
13:32
praying near the Ka'bah.
13:34
So I stood close to him,
13:36
but Allah willed that He should cause me to hear
13:38
some of his words,
13:40
and I heard beautiful speech.
13:42
So I said to myself,
13:44
'May my mother be bereaved of me!
13:46
By Allah, I am a man
13:48
who is intelligent and a poet;
13:50
what is good is not hidden from me, nor what is bad.
13:52
So what prevents me
13:54
from listening to what this man says?
13:56
For if that
13:58
which he brings is good, I will accept it,
14:00
and if it is bad,
14:02
I will leave it.'
14:04
Then I waited until the Messenger of Allah,
14:06
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, turned away
14:08
to his house,
14:10
and I entered upon him
14:12
and said, 'O Muhammad,
14:14
indeed your people told me such and such,
14:16
and such,
14:18
and by Allah, they kept making me fear
14:20
your affair until I stuffed
14:22
my ears with cotton so that I would not
14:24
hear your words.
14:26
Then Allah willed that He should cause me to hear
14:28
your words, and I heard beautiful
14:30
speech.' So he presented—
14:32
so the Messenger of Allah,
14:34
peace be upon him, presented
14:36
Islam to me
14:38
and recited the Qur'an to me.
14:40
And by Allah, I had never heard
14:42
speech better than it,
14:44
nor a matter more just than it.
14:46
So I embraced Islam and bore
14:48
the testimony of truth.
14:50
And I said, 'O Prophet of Allah,
14:52
indeed I am an obeyed man among my people,
14:54
and I am returning
14:56
to them to call them
14:58
to Islam,
15:00
so pray to Allah to make a sign for me
15:02
that will be a help to me against them
15:04
in that to which I call them.'
15:06
So he said,
15:08
'O Allah, grant him a sign.'
15:10
He said: 'So I went out
15:12
to my people until,
15:14
when I was at the mountain pass
15:16
that overlooks the settlement,
15:18
a light fell between my eyes
15:20
like a lamp.
15:22
So I said, "O Allah, place it somewhere other than
15:24
my face, for I fear
15:26
they might think it is a disfigurement."
15:28
So it moved and fell upon the tip of my whip,
15:30
and the people of the settlement began
15:32
looking at that light
15:34
from the tip of my whip
15:36
shining like a lantern
15:38
as I was descending upon them
15:40
from the mountain pass,
15:42
until I reached them and was among them in the morning.
15:44
So when I arrived,
15:46
my father came to me—
15:48
and he was an elderly man—
15:50
and I said, "Keep away from me,
15:52
my father,
15:54
for I am not of you, nor are you of me."
15:56
He said, "Why, my son?"
15:58
I said,
16:00
"I have embraced Islam and followed the religion of Muhammad,
16:02
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him."
16:04
He said,
16:06
"O my son, your religion is my religion."
16:08
I said,
16:10
"Then go and wash, and purify
16:12
your clothes, then come to me
16:14
so that I may teach you of what I have been taught."
16:16
So he went,
16:18
washed, and purified his clothes,
16:20
then he came, and I presented
16:22
Islam to him, and he embraced Islam.
16:24
Then my wife came to me,
16:26
and I said, "Keep away from me,
16:28
for I am not of you, nor are you of me."
16:30
She said,
16:32
"Why, may my father and mother be sacrificed for you?"
16:34
I said,
16:36
"Islam has separated me and you,
16:38
and I have followed the religion of Muhammad,
16:40
peace be upon him."
16:42
She said,
16:44
"Then my religion is your religion."
16:46
So I said, "Then go
16:48
to the sanctuary of Dhu Ash-Shara and purify yourself
16:50
from it."
16:52
She said, "May my father and mother be sacrificed for you,
16:54
do you fear anything for the children from Dhu Ash-Shara—
16:56
any harm?"
16:58
I said, "No,
17:00
I guarantee that."
17:02
She said, "So she went and washed,
17:04
then she came,
17:06
and I presented Islam to her,
17:08
and she embraced Islam."
17:10
Then I called Daws to Islam,
17:12
but they were slow to respond to me.
17:14
Then I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
17:16
in Mecca
17:18
and said, "O Messenger of Allah,
17:20
they were slow to respond to me,
17:22
so supplicate against them."
17:24
But the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said,
17:26
"O Allah,
17:28
guide Daws.
17:30
Return to your people, call them,
17:32
and be gentle with them."
17:34
He said: "So I continued in the land of Daws,
17:36
calling them to Islam,
17:38
until he migrated—
17:40
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him—
17:42
to Medina,
17:44
and Badr, Uhud,
17:46
and Al-Khandaq passed.
17:48
Then I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
17:50
with those who had embraced Islam with me
17:52
from my people,
17:54
while the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
17:56
was at Khaybar,
17:58
and he assigned us a share alongside the Muslims.
