0:00 In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
0:03 Treasures of the Seerah.
0:08 The Entry into Makkah.
0:10 On the morning of the seventeenth of Ramadan,
0:16 the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) set out toward Makkah.
0:20 He commanded al-'Abbas to detain Abu Sufyan at the narrow pass of the valley,
0:25 so that he could watch the army as it marched by.
0:27 So he did so,
0:29 and the tribes began to pass by,
0:31 each tribe carrying its banner.
0:35 Every time a tribe passed by him,
0:37 Abu Sufyan would ask, "O 'Abbas, who are these?"
0:40 He would answer, "Sulaym."
0:42 Abu Sufyan would say,
0:44 "What do I have to do with Sulaym?"
0:47 Then another tribe would pass by him,
0:49 and he would ask, "O 'Abbas, who are these?"
0:52 He would reply, "Muzaynah."
0:54 He would say, "What do I have to do with Muzaynah?"
0:58 This continued until all the tribes had passed.
1:01 Not a single tribe passed by without him asking al-'Abbas about them,
1:05 and whenever al-'Abbas informed him, he would say,
1:08 "What do I have to do with the tribe of so-and-so?
1:10 We have no power to fight all these people."
1:14 This went on until the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) passed by him in his green squadron,
1:19 comprising the Emigrants and the Ansar,
1:22 with nothing visible of them except their eyes behind their iron armor.
1:26 Abu Sufyan said,
1:27 "Glory be to Allah, O 'Abbas!
1:29 Who are these?"
1:31 He replied,
1:32 "This is the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
1:36 along with the Emigrants and the Ansar."
1:39 Abu Sufyan said,
1:41 "No one has the power or capacity to withstand these people."
1:45 Then he said,
1:46 "By Allah, O Abu al-Fadl,
1:48 the kingdom of your nephew has become grand today!"
1:52 Al-'Abbas said,
1:54 "O Abu Sufyan!
1:56 Indeed, it is prophethood."
1:58 He replied,
1:59 "Then yes, indeed,
2:01 it is prophethood."
2:03 The banner of the Ansar was with Sa'd ibn 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him).
2:08 As Sa'd passed by Abu Sufyan, he said to him,
2:12 "Today is the day of fierce battle!
2:14 Today the sacred sanctuary is made permissible!
2:17 Today Allah has humiliated Quraysh!"
2:20 So when the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came parallel to Abu Sufyan,
2:25 Abu Sufyan said to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
2:29 "O Messenger of Allah,
2:31 did you not hear what Sa'd said?"
2:33 He asked,
2:34 "And what did he say?"
2:36 He replied,
2:37 "He said such and such."
2:39 Whereupon 'Uthman and 'Abd al-Rahman ibn 'Awf said,
2:42 "O Messenger of Allah,
2:44 we do not feel safe from him launching an assault against Quraysh."
2:48 But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,
2:51 "No, rather today is a day in which the Ka'bah will be venerated.
2:55 Today is a day in which Allah has honored Quraysh."
2:59 Then he sent word to Sa'd,
3:01 took the standard away from him,
3:03 and handed it to his son, Qays.
3:06 It was also said
3:07 that the standard was not taken away from Sa'd's house;
3:10 and it was said
3:11 that it was handed to al-Zubayr.
3:13 And Allah knows best.
3:15 Then Abu Sufyan entered Makkah
3:17 and called out to Quraysh,
3:19 "A force has come upon you against which you have no power!
3:22 So whoever enters the house of Abu Sufyan shall be safe!"
3:26 They said,
3:27 "May Allah ruin you!
3:28 What good is your house to us?"
3:31 He said,
3:32 "And whoever locks his door behind him shall be safe,
3:36 and whoever enters the Sacred Mosque shall be safe."
3:39 So the people dispersed into their homes and into the Sacred Mosque,
3:43 and the Mother of the Cities (Makkah) lay awake,
3:45 its movements paralyzed by terror.
3:48 Men hid behind locked doors,
3:52 anxiously awaiting their fate in silent dread.
3:55 Yet all honor belongs to Allah, His Messenger, and the believers.
4:01 Treasures of the Seerah.
4:06 The Day of al-Khandamah.
4:10 A group of men marched out intending to fight in defense,
4:14 among them 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl,
4:16 Safwan ibn Umayyah,
4:18 Suhayl ibn 'Amr,
4:19 and Himas ibn Qays,
4:21 along with others who accompanied them.
4:23 They gathered at a place called al-Khandamah.
4:27 Himas ibn Qays had been preparing a weapon of his,
4:31 so his wife asked him,
4:33 "Why are you preparing this weapon?"
4:36 He said,
4:37 "For Muhammad and his companions."
4:39 She said,
4:40 "By Allah, nothing can stand against Muhammad and his companions."
4:44 He replied,
4:45 "By Allah, I hope to capture some of them to serve you."
4:49 Then he recited:
4:51 "If they advance today, I have no excuse;
4:54 here is complete armor and a long spear,
4:57 and a sharp double-edged sword quick to unsheathe!"
5:01 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) entered Makkah,
5:04 having placed Khalid ibn al-Walid in command of the right flank,
5:08 joined by Aslam, Sulaym,
5:11 Ghifar, Muzaynah, Juhaynah,
5:14 and various other Arab tribes.
5:17 He commanded him to enter Makkah from its lower elevated side,
5:20 saying,
5:21 "If anyone from Quraysh confronts you,
5:24 mow them down completely,
5:26 until you meet me at al-Safa."
5:29 Al-Zubayr was in command of the left flank,
5:33 carrying the banner of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
5:38 The battle cry of the Muslims was divided into three:
5:41 As for the Emigrants,
5:42 their battle cry was:
5:44 "O Banu 'Abd al-Rahman!"
5:47 As for the Aws,
5:48 their battle cry was:
5:50 "O Banu 'Ubayd Allah!"
5:52 And as for the Khazraj,
5:54 their battle cry was:
5:56 "O Banu 'Abd Allah!"
5:58 The army entered,
6:00 encountering no resistance whatsoever as they entered Makkah.
6:04 As for Khalid and his companions,
6:06 no polytheist met them except that they struck him down.
6:10 Among those killed alongside Khalid's force were
6:12 Kurz ibn Jabir
6:14 and Khunays ibn Khalid,
6:16 who had strayed from the main army.
6:18 Khalid then encountered the men of al-Khandamah:
6:21 'Ikrimah, Safwan,
6:23 Suhayl, Himas, and others.
6:26 They engaged them in a brief skirmish,
6:29 killing twelve men from among the polytheists,
6:32 while the rest fled in defeat.
6:34 Himas ibn Qays also fled in defeat,
6:37 rushed into his house, and said to his wife,
6:40 "Lock the door!"
6:42 She mockingly said,
6:43 "Where is what you used to say:
6:45 'If they advance today, I have no excuse;
6:48 here is complete armor and a long spear,
6:51 and a sharp double-edged sword quick to unsheathe'?"
6:54 He replied in verse:
6:55 "Had you witnessed the Day of al-Khandamah,
6:58 when Safwan fled and 'Ikrimah fled,
7:02 and the Muslim swords confronted us,
7:05 severing every forearm and skull,
7:08 striking down so that nothing was heard but muffled groans,
7:12 while behind us was their snorting and roaring—
7:15 you would not have uttered a single word of blame!"
7:19 Khalid then advanced
7:20 until he reached al-Safa and met the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
7:26 As for al-Zubayr,
7:27 he pressed forward until he planted the banner of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) near the Sacred Mosque.
7:35 Treasures of the Seerah.
7:40 His Entry (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) into the Sacred Mosque.
7:48 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up,
7:52 with the Emigrants and the Ansar before him, behind him, and all around him,
7:57 and entered the Sacred Mosque.
7:59 He approached the Black Stone and touched it,
8:02 then performed Tawaf around the House while holding a bow in his hand.
8:06 Around the House were three hundred and sixty idols,
8:10 so he began poking them with his bow while reciting:
8:14 “And say: Truth hath come and falsehood hath vanished away. Lo! falsehood is ever bound to vanish.” (17:81)
8:17 “And say: Truth hath come and falsehood hath vanished away. Lo! falsehood is ever bound to vanish.” (17:81)
8:20 “Say: The Truth hath come, and falsehood showeth not its face and will not return.” (34:49)
8:25 These had been, just a short while ago, sacred deities—
8:29 worshipped, invoked, and sought for rescue—
8:32 but now they were mere plaster and dust,
8:36 just as the Prophet of Allah, Abraham (peace be upon him), had said to his people.
8:41 “He said: Do they hear you when ye cry?” (26:72)
8:44 “Or do they benefit or harm you?” (26:73)
8:48 Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) entered the Sacred House of Allah;
8:53 he stepped inside the Ka'bah,
8:55 prayed there, declared Allah's greatness throughout its corners,
8:58 and affirmed the absolute oneness of Allah, the Glorified and Exalted.
9:01 Inside the Ka'bah, he saw depictions of Abraham and Ishmael casting arrows for divination,
9:08 just as the people of the Pre-Islamic Era of Ignorance used to do.
9:10 He said, "May Allah ruin them!
9:13 By Allah, they never practiced divination with arrows at all!"
9:17 He then ordered that the images be erased.
9:19 He did not pray inside the House until they were completely erased;
9:22 once they were erased,
9:24 he prayed two rak'ahs inside the House.
9:27 In this lies proof for the disliking of performing prayer in a place containing images.
9:33 Then he (peace be upon him) sat down in the mosque,
9:37 whereupon 'Ali ibn Abi Talib came to him holding the key to the Ka'bah.
9:42 He said to him, "O Messenger of Allah,
9:45 grant us the custodianship of the Ka'bah along with the provision of water to pilgrims, may Allah's blessings be upon you!"
9:50 The keys had previously been kept by 'Uthman ibn Talhah, from Banu Shaybah.
9:56 So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) asked,
10:00 "Where is 'Uthman ibn Talhah?"
10:02 So he was summoned to him,
10:03 and he said to him,
10:05 "Here is your key, O Uthman!
10:08 Today is a day of righteousness and loyalty."
10:11 Then he gave him the key
10:13 and said to him,
10:14 "Take it as an everlasting, inherited custody;
10:17 none shall strip it from you save a transgressor."
10:21 Thus, the keys to the Ka'bah remained with Banu Shaybah.
10:25 Ibn Hazm (may Allah have mercy on him) stated
10:28 that it remains today in his lineage;
10:30 and the statement of Ibn Hazm
10:31 was in the year 456 AH,
10:36 while today, in our time,
10:38 the year 1426 AH,
10:42 the key still remains with Banu Shaybah.
10:46 It is noted in the footnote
10:47 that today we are in the year 1437 AH.
10:53 And it was said
10:54 that the people of Makkah came to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
10:59 and he said to them,
11:01 "O tribe of Quraysh,
11:03 what do you think I am going to do with you?"
11:06 They replied, "Goodness!
11:07 A noble brother and the son of a noble brother."
11:11 He said,
11:12 "Then I say to you as Joseph said to his brothers:
11:16 “He said: Have no fear this day! May Allah forgive you, and He is the Most Merciful of those who show mercy.” (12:92)
11:19 'Go, for you are the free ones.'"
11:22 However, this narration is weak; its chain of transmission is not authentic.
11:25 Nevertheless, it is established that he pardoned them (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him).
11:30 Then, when the time for prayer arrived,
11:33 the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded
11:36 and instructed Bilal to ascend and call the adhan atop the Ka'bah.
11:40 Abu Sufyan ibn Harb,
11:42 'Attab ibn Asid,
11:44 and Al-Harith ibn Hisham were sitting in the courtyard of the Ka'bah.
11:48 'Attab said,
11:50 "Allah honored Asid by not letting him live to hear this,"
11:55 meaning: my father died without hearing the adhan,
11:58 so he was spared from hearing that which would enrage him.
12:01 Al-Harith said,
12:03 "If I knew it were the truth, I would have followed him."
12:07 Abu Sufyan said,
12:09 "As for me, by Allah, I shall say nothing!
12:12 For if I spoke,
12:13 these pebbles would inform upon me."
12:17 Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came out to them and said,
12:21 "I have come to know what you said,"
12:23 and he repeated it back to them.
12:26 Now, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not know the unseen,
12:30 but rather it was divine revelation from Allah, Blessed and Exalted.
12:34 Al-Harith and 'Attab said,
12:36 “When the hypocrites come unto thee (O Muhammad), they say: We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's messenger. And Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the hypocrites indeed are speaking falsely.” (63:1)
12:39 "By Allah, no one was with us who could have disclosed this,
12:43 such that we might say they informed you!"
12:45 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered
12:48 the home of Umm Hani,
12:50 the sister of 'Ali ibn Abi Talib,
12:53 where he performed ghusl and prayed eight rak'ahs in her house.
12:57 Some scholars said:
12:58 This is the Sunnah of Conquest,
13:00 which certain commanders adopted as a Sunnah whenever they conquered a land;
13:05 while others said:
13:07 It was the Duha (forenoon) prayer.
13:09 Umm Hani said to the Messenger of Allah,
13:12 "The son of my mother, 'Ali, claims
13:14 that he will kill a man to whom I have granted protection—
13:17 so-and-so, the son of Hubayrah."
13:19 The Messenger of Allah replied,
13:21 "We give protection to whomever you protect, O Umm Hani."
13:24 In another narration,
13:26 she said,
13:27 "I had granted protection to two of my in-laws,
13:30 but 'Ali intended to kill them."
13:33 When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered the Mosque,
13:37 Abu Bakr came leading his father,
13:40 who was blind.
13:42 When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw him, he said,
13:47 "Why did you not leave the old man in his house,
13:49 so that I could go to him myself?"
13:52 Abu Bakr replied,
13:53 "He is more deserving of walking to you
13:55 than you walking to him."
13:58 So he seated him, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) wiped over his chest
14:04 and said,
14:05 "Embrace Islam, and you will be safe."
14:07 So he embraced Islam.
14:08 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said,
14:12 "Change this grey hair,
14:13 but avoid black."
14:16 And this family—
14:17 the family of Abu Bakr—
14:19 the grandfather embraced Islam,
14:21 namely Abu Quhafah,
14:23 the father of Abu Bakr,
14:24 making him a Companion;
14:27 Abu Bakr was a Companion;
14:29 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr was a Companion;
14:32 and Muhammad ibn 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Bakr
14:35 was also a Companion.
14:37 This is the only family containing four consecutive generations who were all Companions.
14:43 A similar distinction applies to four others,
14:47 namely 'Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr,
14:49 who was a Companion;
14:50 his mother Asma',
14:52 a female Companion;
14:53 his grandfather Abu Bakr, a Companion;
14:56 and his mother's grandfather—who is the father of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq—
15:00 likewise a Companion.
15:14 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) entered Makkah
15:18 and declared nine individuals outlawed,
15:20 as they were among the most egregious criminals,
15:24 ordering their execution
15:25 even if they were found clinging to the drapes of the Ka'bah.
15:28 They were: 'Abd al-'Uzza ibn Khatal,
15:31 'Abdullah ibn Abi Sarh,
15:34 'Ikrimah ibn Abi Jahl,
15:36 Al-Harith ibn Nufayl ibn Wahb,
15:39 Miqyas ibn Subabah,
15:41 Habbar ibn al-Aswad,
15:43 two singing slave-girls who used to sing lampoons satirizing the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
15:49 and Sarah,
15:50 a freedwoman belonging to some of Banu 'Abd al-Muttalib,
15:54 with whom the letter sent by Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah was intercepted.
15:59 As for Ibn Abi Sarh,
16:01 he came to 'Uthman seeking his protection,
16:05 so 'Uthman brought him to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and interceded for him,
16:10 and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) accepted his intercession.
16:14 As for 'Abd al-'Uzza ibn Khatal,
16:17 he was found clinging to the drapes of the Ka'bah,
16:20 so he was brought to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
16:24 who ordered his execution.
16:26 As for Miqyas ibn Subabah,
16:28 he was likewise executed;
16:30 Numaylah ibn 'Abdullah killed him.
16:33 Miqyas had previously accepted Islam,
16:36 but later apostatized,
16:38 murdered a man from the Ansar,
16:40 and fled to join the polytheists.
16:43 As for Al-Harith ibn Nufayl ibn Wahb,
16:46 he was severe in harming the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in Makkah,
16:51 so 'Ali ibn Abi Talib executed him.
16:54 As for Habbar ibn al-Aswad,
16:57 who had harmed Zaynab, the daughter of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
17:03 he fled along with 'Ikrimah,
17:05 but later embraced Islam.
17:06 As for the two singing slave-girls,
17:08 one of them was executed,
17:10 while the other sought quarter and subsequently embraced Islam.
17:13 As for Sarah,
17:15 it was said that she embraced Islam, and it was also said that she was executed.
