The Expulsion of Banu Qurayzah.
0:13
Jibril, peace be upon him, came
0:16
to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
0:19
and asked, "Have you laid down your weapons?"
0:22
He replied, "Yes." Jibril said,
0:25
"As for us, we have not laid down our weapons yet.
0:28
Advance against these people;
0:31
Allah commands you to do so."
0:34
So the Prophet (peace be upon him) set forth,
0:37
commanded the people, and said,
0:39
"None of you should pray 'Asr
0:42
except at Banu Qurayzah."
0:44
The Muslims set out in prompt obedience
0:46
to the command of the Prophet, peace be upon him,
0:49
toward Banu Qurayzah,
0:51
hastening their pace.
0:52
He gave the standard to 'Ali Ibn Abi Talib,
0:55
appointed Ibn Umm Maktum in charge of Madinah,
0:59
and advanced until he halted at the fortresses of
1:01
Banu Qurayzah,
1:03
besieging them for twenty-five nights.
1:06
Their chieftain, Ka'b Ibn Asad, made proposals to them,
1:09
saying,
1:10
"Either you embrace Islam
1:12
and join Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
1:15
in his religion;
1:17
or you kill your children
1:19
and go out to fight until you are all slain
1:22
to the very last man;
1:24
or you launch a surprise attack on the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
1:28
and his Companions on the Sabbath,
1:30
when the Muslims feel secure from your harm."
1:33
But they rejected all of them.
1:36
Thereupon he said to them,
1:37
"By Allah, you are like donkeys,
1:40
accepting nothing at all!"
1:42
At that point, one of them stepped forward and said,
1:45
"O Messenger of Allah,
1:47
we surrender to the judgment of Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh."
1:50
This was because 'Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul,
1:53
as mentioned earlier,
1:55
had interceded for Banu Qaynuqa',
1:58
and the Prophet (peace be upon him) had spared them for his sake.
2:02
So these people sought the arbitration of Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh
2:05
because he had been their ally in the pre-Islamic era (Jahiliyyah).
2:09
They said, "Perhaps he will defend us
2:12
just as 'Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul defended
2:15
Banu Qaynuqa'."
2:17
Yet they did not realize the vast difference between 'Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul,
2:20
the arch-hypocrite,
2:22
and Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh,
2:24
who was among the foremost of the righteous, may Allah be pleased with him.
2:27
So they said, "We submit to the judgment of Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh,
2:31
just as our brethren submitted to the judgment of 'Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul."
2:36
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered
2:39
that Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh be brought.
2:42
He had been wounded in his medial arm vein, may Allah be pleased with him.
2:45
When he arrived,
2:47
the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
2:50
"Stand up for your chieftain,"
2:53
meaning Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him),
2:56
"and help him down from the donkey he has arrived upon."
2:59
Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) said,
3:03
"Pass judgment upon your allies."
3:05
So they began clamoring to him,
3:07
"Be benevolent, O Abu 'Amr, toward your allies,
3:10
just as others showed benevolence!"
3:12
Thereupon Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh said,
3:14
"The time has come for Sa'd not to fear, for the sake of Allah, the blame of any blamer."
3:19
He then said,
3:21
"My judgment concerning them is
3:23
that their fighting men be executed,
3:25
and their women and children be taken as captives."
3:27
The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
3:31
"You have judged concerning them with the judgment of Allah."
3:35
So the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded
3:37
the execution of their combatant men
3:39
and the taking of their women and children as captives.

3:46
The Expedition of Banu al-Mustaliq,
3:51
in the sixth year of the Hijrah,
3:55
also known as the Expedition of al-Muraysi'.
3:58
It took place in the sixth year,
4:00
though it is also said to have occurred at the end of the fourth year of the Hijrah.
4:04
The cause of this expedition was
4:06
that the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
4:09
received word that the chieftain of Banu al-Mustaliq,
4:12
al-Harith Ibn Abi Dirar,
4:14
had rallied his people and whichever Arabs he could gather,
4:17
intending to wage war against the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
4:22
So the Prophet (peace be upon him) dispatched
4:25
Buraydah Ibn al-Husayb
4:27
to verify the matter.
4:29
He went to them, met al-Harith Ibn Abi Dirar,
4:32
and spoke with him,
4:33
then returned to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
4:37
informing him that they indeed intended to fight him.
4:41
Once the Prophet (peace be upon him) had verified
4:44
the truth of the report,
4:46
he rallied the Companions and ordered them to march forth.
4:49
A group of hypocrites also marched out with him,
4:52
because the hypocrites outwardly displayed Islam
4:56
while concealing disbelief.
4:58
When al-Harith Ibn Abi Dirar heard
5:01
of the departure of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
5:05
he was gripped by severe fear,
5:07
and the Arabs who were with him dispersed.
5:11
When the Prophet (peace be upon him) reached
5:14
al-Muraysi',
5:16
which was a watering hole belonging to Khuza'ah,
5:18
the banner of the Muhajirun was with Abu Bakr as-Siddiq,
5:22
and the banner of the Ansar was with Sa'd Ibn 'Ubadah.
5:26
Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said
5:29
that no actual battle took place between them;
5:32
rather, the Prophet (peace be upon him) launched a surprise raid on them at the water
5:37
after most of their combatants had fled,
5:40
taking their offspring captive and seizing their wealth.
5:43
As recorded in Sahih al-Bukhari:
5:46
"The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, raided Banu al-Mustaliq
5:51
while they were heedless."
5:53
Among the captives taken during this expedition was
5:56
Juwayriyah bint al-Harith,
5:58
the daughter of the chieftain of his people.
6:00
She fell to the share of Thabit Ibn Qays,
6:03
who entered into a contract of manumission (mukatabah) with her.
6:05
Mukatabah means that he says to her,
6:08
"You shall have your freedom provided that you pay me an amount of money,"
6:12
such as one hundred or two hundred dinars,
6:15
according to whatever terms they mutually agreed upon.
6:18
When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, heard of that,
6:22
he paid the contract amount on her behalf
6:24
and then married her, peace be upon him, as a free woman.
6:28
When the Muslims heard that the Prophet (peace be upon him)
6:32
had married Juwayriyah,
6:35
they emancipated all the captives and offspring of Banu Khuza'ah in their possession,
6:39
saying,
6:41
"They are the in-laws of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."
6:45
Two notable incidents involving the arch-hypocrite,
6:48
'Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul,
6:51
occurred during that expedition.
6:53
Treasures of the Seerah.
6:56
“They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not.” (63:8)
7:05
'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, had a hired worker
7:09
named Jahjah al-Ghifari.
7:12
Jahjah jostled with Sinan Ibn Wabr al-Juhani at the water,
7:17
and they began to fight.
7:19
The Juhani shouted,
7:21
"O people of the Ansar!"
7:23
while Jahjah shouted,
7:26
"O people of the Muhajirun!"
7:28
Thereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,
7:32
"Do you invoke the slogans of Jahiliyyah while I am still among you?
7:36
Leave it, for it is foul and rotten!"
7:39
When 'Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul heard of this,
7:43
he said,
7:44
"Have they actually done it?
7:46
They rival us and outnumber us in our own land!
7:50
By Allah, the case between us and them
7:52
is just as the ancient saying goes:
7:54
'Fatten your dog and it will devour you!'
7:57
By Allah, if we return to Madinah,
8:00
“They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not.” (63:8)
8:03
Then he turned to those present with him and said to them,
8:07
"This is what you have brought upon yourselves!
8:10
You settled them in your land
8:12
and shared your wealth with them.
8:15
By Allah, had you withheld from them what is in your hands,
8:19
they would have moved to a land other than yours!"
8:22
Zayd Ibn Arqam, may Allah be pleased with him, overheard these words,
8:26
and he was only a young boy.
8:29
So he went to his uncle and informed him,
8:32
and his uncle informed the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.
8:36
'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, was present with him,
8:39
so 'Umar said, "O Messenger of Allah,
8:42
command 'Abbad Ibn Bishr to execute him!"
8:45
But the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied,
8:49
"How will it be, O 'Umar,
8:51
if people say that Muhammad kills his own companions?"
8:55
Then the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, remained silent.
8:59
When the people set out on the march,
9:01
Usayd Ibn Hudayr, may Allah be pleased with him, came to him,
9:05
and the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said to him,
9:09
"Have you not heard what your companion said?"
9:13
He asked, "And what did he say?"
9:16
The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied,
9:19
"He claims that if he returns to Madinah,
9:22
“They say: Surely, if we return to Al-Madinah the mightier will soon drive out the weaker; when might belongeth to Allah and to His messenger and to the believers; but the hypocrites know not.” (63:8)
9:25
Thereupon Usayd Ibn Hudayr said,
9:28
"Then you, O Messenger of Allah, can drive him out of it if you wish!
9:31
He, by Allah, is the humiliated one,
9:34
and you, by Allah, are the mighty one."
9:37
Then he said, "O Messenger of Allah,
9:40
be gentle with him. By Allah, Allah brought you to us
9:43
when his people were already stringing beads
9:46
to crown him king, so he feels
9:49
that you have stripped him of his kingdom."
9:52
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, then kept marching
9:55
with the people until morning came,
9:59
and continued until the scorching sun began to trouble them.
10:02
Then the people halted and fell fast asleep,
10:05
for the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
10:08
did not want them to talk about this matter,
10:11
so he marched them until they were exhausted,
10:14
so that when they finally arrived, they immediately slept.
10:17
As for 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy,
10:20
he learned that Zayd had informed the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
10:23
about what had happened,
10:26
so he came to the Messenger of Allah, swore an oath, and said:
10:29
"By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, I never said that;
10:32
rather, Zayd lied about me."
10:35
And those present from among the Ansar said:
10:38
"O Messenger of Allah, perhaps
10:41
the boy was mistaken in what he related,
10:44
and did not accurately recall what the man said." And so he was believed.
10:47
Zayd ibn Arqam said:
10:50
"I was struck with grief such as I had never experienced before,"
10:53
because he was accused of lying or misunderstanding.
10:56
He said: "So I stayed in my home
10:59
out of sorrow." Then Allah, the Exalted and Glorious, revealed:
11:02
"When the hypocrites come to you,
11:05
they say..."
11:08
“When the hypocrites come unto thee (O Muhammad), they say: We bear witness that thou art indeed Allah's messenger. And Allah knoweth that thou art indeed His messenger, and Allah beareth witness that the hypocrites indeed are speaking falsely.” (63:1)
11:11
"...and Allah knows that you are indeed
11:14
His Messenger, and Allah bears witness
11:17
that the hypocrites are indeed liars,"
11:21
up to His words, Exalted is He:
11:24
"They are the ones who say..."
11:27
“They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not.” (63:7)
11:30
“They it is who say: Spend not on behalf of those (who dwell) with Allah's messenger that they may disperse (and go away from you); when Allah's are the treasures of the heavens and the earth; but the hypocrites comprehend not.” (63:7)
11:33
"...and to Allah belong the treasuries
11:36
of the heavens and the earth,
11:39
but the hypocrites
11:42
do not understand."
11:45
"They say, 'If we return to Medina,
11:48
the more honorable will surely expel the humbler from it.'"
11:51
"Yet to Allah belongs all honor,
11:54
and to His Messenger,
11:57
and to the believers,
12:00
but the hypocrites
12:03
do not know."
12:06
Here, Allah, Blessed and Exalted, made it clear
12:09
that Zayd had not lied, may Allah be pleased with him;
12:12
rather, he had spoken the truth in what he reported,
12:15
and 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul
12:18
was a liar in his claim.
12:21
So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent
12:24
for Zayd, recited it to him,
12:27
and then said to him: "Indeed, Allah
12:30
has vindicated you." And 'Abdullah,
12:33
the son of 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul,
12:36
was a righteous man from among the Companions of the Prophet,
12:39
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
12:43
He stood up to his father
12:46
upon his entry into Medina
12:49
and said to him: "Are you the one who says,
12:52
'If we return to Medina, the more honorable will surely expel
12:55
the humbler from it,'
12:58
intending the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him?
13:01
By Allah, the Messenger of Allah is indeed the honorable one,
13:04
and you are the humblest!"
13:07
Thus the zeal for faith surpassed the bond of kinship.
13:10
Then he said: "By Allah, you shall not enter Medina
13:13
unless I kill you,
13:16
or the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, permits you."
13:19
At that point, the Prophet,
13:22
peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered him to let him pass,
13:25
and he entered Medina.
13:28
In another narration, he came to
13:31
the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
13:34
and said: "O Messenger of Allah,
13:37
I know that my father said such-and-such,
13:40
so if you intend to kill him,
13:43
let me be the one to kill him;
13:46
for I fear that if I see my father's killer,
13:50
I will not be able to restrain myself."
