He approached him and reminded him of the kinship ties between the Banu Hashim and the Banu al-Muttalib,

and reproached him for agreeing with the Quraysh on this injustice.

while the Banu Hashim are perishing, neither buying nor selling?

By Allah, I will not sit down until this oppressive and severing document is torn up."

Abu Jahl stood up and said,

"You lie, by Allah! It shall not be torn up."

At this point, Zam'ah ibn al-Aswad stood up

and said to Abu Jahl,

"You, by Allah, are the bigger liar!

We were not pleased with its writing when it was written."

Abu al-Bakhtari stood up and said,

"Zam'ah is telling the truth.

We are not pleased with what is written in it, nor do we acknowledge it."

Al-Mut'im ibn 'Adi stood up and said,

"You both speak the truth, and whoever says otherwise is a liar.

We disavow before Allah what is in it and what was written in it."

Hisham ibn 'Amr stood up and said,

"You speak the truth, and whoever says otherwise is a liar.

We disavow it before Allah."

When these five spoke in this manner before all the people,

Abu Jahl said,

"This is a matter that was decided upon overnight,

and consulted upon somewhere other than this place."

Abu Talib was present, and he said,

"Allah has informed His Messenger about the matter of the document.

My nephew has told me that Allah sent the termites upon it,

and they consumed everything in it that contained injustice, severance of ties, and oppression,

except for that which contained the name of Allah.

If my nephew is truthful, then end this boycott,

and if he is a liar, we will leave him to you."

They said, "You have spoken fairly."

Al-Mut'im ibn 'Adi went to the document,

We want a word you can give,

by which you would rule over the Arabs,

and the non-Arabs would submit to you."

They said, "A word."

Abu Jahl stood up and said,

Quraysh left the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, alone

for a period of time.

Then came the death of Abu Talib,

the uncle of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

in the tenth year of the Prophethood,

six months after they left the valley.

On the authority of Sa'id ibn al-Musayyib,

From his father, al-Musayyib, may Allah be pleased with him:

When Abu Talib was on his deathbed,

While Abu Jahl was with him,

As well as ‘Abdullah Ibn Abi Umayyah.

The Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said

To his uncle, Abu Talib:

"O my uncle,

Say: 'There is no god but Allah,'

A word by which I may plead for you before Allah."

The Prophet kept repeating it, and they kept repeating theirs,

"He is upon the creed of ‘Abd al-Muttalib."

"I will surely seek forgiveness for you as long as I am not forbidden from doing so."

Then the word of Allah, Blessed and Exalted be He, was revealed:

“It is not for the Prophet, and those who believe, to pray for the forgiveness of idolaters even though they may be near of kin (to them) after it hath become clear that they are people of hell-fire.” (9:113)

“It is not for the Prophet, and those who believe, to pray for the forgiveness of idolaters even though they may be near of kin (to them) after it hath become clear that they are people of hell-fire.” (9:113)

And that was revealed as the word of Allah, Blessed and Exalted be He:

“Lo! thou (O Muhammad) guidest not whom thou lovest, but Allah guideth whom He will. And He is Best Aware of those who walk aright.” (28:56)

There are many benefits to be derived from this story,

Was deeply eager for Abu Talib to embrace Islam.

By Allah, had Abu Talib said that word,

That he visited a Jewish boy

While he was on his deathbed,

And said to him, "Say: 'There is no god but Allah.'"

The boy turned to his father,

And his father said to him, "Obey Abu al-Qasim."

So the boy said, "I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

And that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah," then he died.

Saying, "Praise be to Allah who saved him from the Fire."

By Allah, had Abu Talib said it,

Allah would have saved him from the Fire.

By Allah, we all wished that Abu Talib had said it,

And by Allah, we would never have been saddened,

And we would never be saddened if Abu Talib had believed.

We wish for all people to believe,

But we must adhere to the texts,

Which state that Abu Talib, the uncle of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, did not embrace Islam,

Even though he supported him, defended him,

Protected him, and went out with him to the mountain pass (al-Shi‘b).

Yet, despite all this, he died in a state of polytheism.

Who joined Abu Jahl in preventing Abu Talib from responding to the command of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

Embraced Islam in the year of the Conquest (of Makkah),

And it is mentioned that he was martyred at Hunayn.

After the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was saddened by the death of his uncle Abu Talib,

With the news of the death of Khadijah, the Mother of the Believers, may Allah be pleased with her.

Carrying a vessel containing stew, food, or drink.

When she reaches you,

Convey to her the greeting of peace from her Lord,

And give her glad tidings of a house in Paradise made of hollowed pearls,

Where there is neither noise nor fatigue."
