0:00 In the name of Allah, the Entirely Merciful, the Especially Merciful.

0:03 Treasures of the Prophetic biography (Seerah).

0:06 A courageous stance.

0:11 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, wished to reconcile with the tribes of Fazarah and Ghatafan, among others.

0:20 He spoke to Sa‘d ibn Mu‘adh and Sa‘d ibn ‘Ubadah,

0:24 who were the leaders of the Aws and the Khazraj.

0:27 He asked them, "What do you say?"

0:28 [They replied,] "We shall give Ghatafan a third of the fruits of Medina,

0:32 on the condition that they turn back."

0:34 This was because Ghatafan represented four thousand [fighters]

0:37 out of the ten thousand [besieging them].

0:39 The Quraysh had four thousand,

0:41 and the remaining tribes who came with the Quraysh

0:45 accounted for two thousand.

0:47 [The Prophet, peace be upon him,] then asked,

0:48 "O Messenger of Allah,

0:50 if Allah has commanded you to do this,

0:53 then we hear and we obey.

0:55 But if this is something you are doing for our sake,

0:57 then we have no need for it.

0:59 We and these people were once both in a state of shirk (polytheism).

1:03 By Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

1:05 they would not dare to eat a single fruit of ours,

1:08 except by purchase or as a guest.

1:10 So how could we [give them our wealth] now that Allah has honored us with Islam?

1:14 Is it now, after Allah has honored us with Islam,

1:16 guided us to it,

1:18 and granted us might through you,

1:20 that we should give them our wealth?

1:22 No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah,

1:24 we will give them nothing but the sword."

1:27 This is a rare form of courage.

1:30 They were being besieged by ten thousand,

1:32 while they were few in number,

1:34 facing betrayal and treachery from within, and hunger.

1:37 They could have used this agreement

1:40 to turn away four thousand of their enemies,

1:43 yet they refused.

1:46 The Prophet, peace be upon him, validated their opinion and said,

1:51 "By Allah, I would not do that

1:53 except that I saw that the Arabs had all targeted you from a single bow."

2:01 War is deception.

2:07 Nu‘aym ibn Mas‘ud came to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

2:13 and said, "O Messenger of Allah,

2:15 I have embraced Islam,

2:17 and I wish to fight alongside you."

2:19 He asked,

2:21 "Does anyone know of your Islam?"

2:23 He replied, "No."

2:24 He said,

2:25 "Then sow discord among them as much as you can."

2:28 He said, "I will."

2:30 So Nu‘aym ibn Mas‘ud went to the Banu Qurayzah from within [the city],

2:34 and said to them,

2:36 "O my people,

2:37 the Quraysh are a treacherous people.

2:39 If they gain victory over Muhammad and achieve what they want,

2:44 they will leave and abandon you.

2:46 Then the people of Medina will take revenge upon you."

2:49 They said, "No,

2:51 they will stand with us,

2:53 for they have made a covenant with us through Huyayy ibn Akhtab."

2:56 He said,

2:57 "I do not see [it that way];

2:59 you should take a ransom from them to guarantee your rights."

3:03 They asked, "And what is that?"

3:05 He said,

3:06 "Demand that they give you ten of their sons,

3:10 so that if they betray you, you can kill them.

3:13 They will not betray you out of fear for their children."

3:17 They said,

3:18 "That is a sound idea."

3:20 Then he went to the Quraysh

3:22 and said to them,

3:23 "You know that the Jews are a treacherous people,

3:27 and they will betray you."

3:29 They asked, "How?"

3:31 He said,

3:32 "I heard them talking;

3:34 they say they will take ten of the Quraysh

3:38 and hand them over to Muhammad

3:40 to prove to him their good intentions and that they are sincere,

3:44 and that they are with him."

3:46 So the Quraysh met with the Jews,

3:48 and the Jews said to the Quraysh,

3:51 "Give us ten of your sons

3:54 so that we may guarantee our rights."

3:56 The Quraysh said to themselves,

3:59 "Yes,

4:00 they want the ten to hand them over to Muhammad."

4:03 So they said,

4:05 "No, that will not happen."

4:07 The Jews said to themselves,

4:10 "Yes,

4:11 the Quraysh want to betray us,

4:14 therefore, do not give them the ten."

4:16 Thus, Allah, Blessed and Exalted be He, dissolved the covenant that was between them,

4:20 and granted victory to His Messenger, peace be upon him.

4:24 At that point, the Qurayzah abandoned the Quraysh,

4:27 and the Quraysh abandoned the Qurayzah.

4:30 The siege continued,

4:32 then Allah, Blessed and Exalted be He, sent soldiers from Himself,

4:36 consisting of a mighty wind

4:39 which Allah, Blessed and Exalted be He, sent against them.

4:42 They abandoned their positions

4:44 and returned to their lands, disappointed.

4:48 Treasures of the Seerah.

4:52 Delaying the ‘Asr prayer.

4:57 The Prophet, peace be upon him, was distracted from the ‘Asr prayer,

5:03 just as his brother Sulayman, peace be upon him, was distracted by his horses,

5:08 until the sun had set.

5:10 The Prophet, peace be upon him,

5:13 was distracted by the army of Mecca and those who came with them,

5:16 until the sun had set.

5:18 He said,

5:20 "They have distracted us from the middle prayer, the ‘Asr prayer;

5:24 may Allah fill their graves and their houses with fire."

5:28 Thus, he invoked [Allah] against them, peace be upon him.

5:32 Treasures of the Seerah.

5:38 Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him,

5:41 and the night of the Confederates (al-Ahzab).

5:45 Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

5:49 "We were with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

5:52 on the night of the Confederates.

5:54 A severe wind and extreme cold struck us.

5:57 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said,

6:01 'Is there a man who will bring me news of the people,

6:04 and Allah will make him my companion on the Day of Resurrection?'

6:07 We remained silent, and none of us answered him.

6:10 Then he said,

6:12 'Is there a man who will bring us news of the people,

6:15 and Allah will make him my companion on the Day of Resurrection?'

6:18 We remained silent.

6:20 Then he said,

6:21 'Stand up, O Hudhayfah,

6:23 go and bring me news of the people.'

6:26 He said,

6:27 'I found no way out,

6:29 since he called me by my name, but to stand up.'

6:32 He said,

6:33 'Go and bring me news of the people,

6:36 and do not alarm them against me.'

6:38 When I turned away from him,

6:40 I felt as if I were walking in a warm bath;

6:43 I did not feel the cold.

6:45 This was a strengthening from Allah, the Almighty and Majestic.

6:48 He said,

6:49 'Until I came to them.

6:51 Abu Sufyan was warming his back by the fire.

6:54 I placed an arrow in the notch of my bow,

6:57 and I wanted to shoot him,

6:59 but I remembered the words of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

7:03 'Do not alarm them against me.'

7:05 Had I shot him, I would have hit him.'

7:08 Glory be to Allah!

7:10 Allah willed for Abu Sufyan to embrace Islam and be safe.

7:14 He said,

7:15 'I returned, and I was still walking as if in a warm bath.'

7:20 When I arrived, I informed him of their news.

7:23 When I finished, I felt the cold again.

7:27 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, covered me

7:31 with the edge of a cloak he was wearing while he prayed.

7:35 I remained asleep until morning.

7:38 When morning came, he said,

7:41 'Get up, O sleepyhead!'"

7:43 Treasures of the Seerah.

7:48 The Prophet, peace be upon him, invokes [Allah] against the Confederates.

7:56 Here, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prayed, saying:

8:01 "O Allah, Revealer of the Book,

8:04 Swift in reckoning,

8:06 defeat the Confederates.

8:08 O Allah, defeat them and shake them."

8:11 So Allah sent against them soldiers from His soldiers,

8:14 which was a cold wind.

8:16 It extinguished their fires,

8:18 uprooted their tents,

8:19 and overturned their cooking pots.

8:21 Cold, hunger, and fear.

8:24 And Allah is over all things competent.

8:27 Their unity was shattered,

8:29 and Abu Sufyan announced the retreat in shame,

8:33 and ordered the Quraysh to depart.

8:36 That is why the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

8:40 "There is no god but Allah alone;

8:43 He honored His soldiers,

8:45 gave victory to His servant,

8:46 and defeated the Confederates alone;

8:48 there is nothing after Him."

8:51 Treasures of the Seerah.

8:54 The expulsion of the Banu Qurayzah.

8:59 Jibril, peace be upon him, came

9:03 to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

9:06 and said,

9:07 "Have you laid down your weapons?"

9:09 He said, "Yes."

9:11 Jibril said,

9:13 "As for us, we have not yet laid down our weapons.

9:16 Set out toward the people.

9:18 Allah commands you to do this.

9:21 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out,

9:24 and he commanded the people, saying,

9:26 "Let no one among you pray the Asr prayer except at Banu Qurayza."

9:31 The Muslims went out in response to the command of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

9:36 toward Banu Qurayza.

9:38 He hastened them,

9:39 and he gave the banner to Ali Ibn Abi Talib.

9:42 He appointed Ibn Umm Maktum as his deputy over Medina.

9:46 He arrived and camped by the fortresses of Banu Qurayza,

9:50 and he besieged them for 25 nights.

9:53 Their leader, Ka'b Ibn Asad, presented them with options,

9:56 saying,

9:58 "Either you embrace Islam and enter into the religion of Muhammad, peace be upon him,"

10:04 "or you kill your own offspring,"

10:07 "and go out to fight until you are all killed to the last man,"

10:11 "or you attack the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and his Companions on the Sabbath,"

10:18 "at a time when the Muslims least expect your treachery."

10:21 They rejected all of these options.

10:23 He said to them,

10:25 "By Allah, you are fools,"

10:27 "and you will accept nothing."

10:30 At that point, one of them came out and said,

10:33 "O Messenger of Allah,"

10:35 "we will submit to the judgment of Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh."

10:37 This was because Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul,

10:40 as mentioned previously,

10:42 had interceded on behalf of Banu Qaynuqa',

10:44 and the Prophet, peace be upon him, had spared them for his sake.

10:48 So, these people wanted the judgment of Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh,

10:52 because he had been their ally during the pre-Islamic period (Jahiliyyah),

10:56 and they said, "Perhaps he will defend us,"

10:59 "just as Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul"

11:02 "defended Banu Qaynuqa'."

11:04 They did not realize the difference between Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul,

11:07 the head of the hypocrites,

11:09 and Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh,

11:11 one of the leaders of the righteous, may Allah be pleased with him.

11:14 So they said, "We will submit to the judgment of Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh,"

11:18 "just as our brethren submitted to the judgment of Abdullah Ibn Ubayy Ibn Salul."

11:23 The Prophet, peace be upon him, ordered

11:26 that Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh be brought to him.

11:29 He had been wounded in his arm, may Allah be pleased with him.

11:33 When he arrived,

11:34 the Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

11:38 "Stand up for your leader,"

11:40 meaning Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him,

11:43 "and help him down from the donkey he arrived on."

11:47 The Prophet, peace be upon him, then said,

11:50 "Pass judgment on your allies."

11:52 They began to call out to him,

11:55 "Be lenient, Abu 'Amr, regarding your allies,"

11:58 "just as others have been lenient."

12:00 Sa'd Ibn Mu'adh replied,

12:02 "The time has come for Sa'd not to fear the blame of any critic for the sake of Allah."

12:07 He then said, "My judgment regarding them is"

12:10 "that their fighting men be killed,"

12:13 "and their offspring be taken captive."

12:15 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said,

12:19 "You have judged them with the judgment of Allah."

12:22 The Prophet, peace be upon him, then ordered

12:25 the execution of their men,

12:27 and the taking of their offspring and women as captives.
