Towards the end of the third year after the Hijrah,
0:50
there arrived in Yathrib
0:52
a delegation from Banu Khuzaymah feigning
0:54
Islam and outwardly professing
0:56
faith.
0:58
The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, warmly
1:00
welcomed them and generously hosted
1:02
their delegation, and
1:04
the Companions rejoiced over them immensely,
1:06
making them feel entirely at home
1:08
and extending to them utmost hospitality.
1:11
Before the men of the delegation prepared
1:13
to depart back to their people,
1:15
they said, "O Messenger of Allah,
1:17
indeed among our people are many
1:19
who believe in Allah and His Messenger,
1:21
yet they have not been fortunate enough
1:23
to gain knowledge of Islam,
1:25
nor have they been illuminated by the light of faith.
1:27
If only you would send with us
1:29
a group of your Companions to recite to us
1:31
the Qur'an
1:33
and teach us the laws of Islam,
1:35
instructing us in the religion of Allah."
1:37
So the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
1:39
granted their request
1:41
and selected for them
1:43
six of the Ansar:
1:45
Marthad al-Ghanawi,
1:47
Khalid al-Laythi,
1:49
'Abdullah Ibn Tariq,
1:51
Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,
1:53
Khubayb Ibn 'Adiy,
1:55
and 'Asim Ibn Thabit.
1:57
He instructed them to prepare to journey with them
1:59
and reside among them
2:01
until his further command reached them.
2:03
These six noble, righteous men
2:05
from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, rejoiced
2:08
in the mission entrusted to them,
2:10
and their brethren envied them
2:12
for the great reward decreed for them.
2:14
And how could they not rejoice,
2:16
or not be envied?
2:18
For prior to this day,
2:20
they had enjoyed the merit of supporting
2:22
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
2:24
and now added to that
2:26
the reward of emigrating
2:28
to propagate the religion of Allah.
2:30
The noble Messenger,
2:32
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, bade farewell
2:34
to the group of six of his Companions,
2:36
counseling them to remain conscious of Allah
2:38
in secret and in public,
2:40
and appointed Marthad
2:42
al-Ghanawi as their leader.
2:44
Then their families and loved ones bid them farewell,
2:46
urging them to take care of themselves
2:48
and treat their companions well.
2:50
The guiding callers to Allah set out
2:52
alongside the delegation of Banu Khuzaymah,
2:54
leaving behind family and home,
2:56
parting with kinsfolk and homeland.
2:58
Yet none of that
3:00
weighed heavily upon them;
3:02
rather, what grieved them was parting from
3:04
the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,
3:06
and being distant from him.
3:08
For they never imagined
3:10
they could endure
3:12
being away from him,
3:14
nor did they ever expect to part from him
3:16
as long as their lives endured.
3:18
The caravan pressed forward, hastening
3:21
its steps toward the settlements of Banu Khuzaymah,
3:23
situated near
3:25
'Usfan,
3:27
while the guiding callers traversed
3:29
the wilderness
3:31
to meet those eager to embrace the religion of Allah.
3:33
But when they reached the region of al-Raji',
3:35
they were ambushed by the most heinous
3:37
treachery—one so appalling
3:39
that hearts were torn to pieces by its atrocity
3:41
and souls were shattered
3:43
by its horror.
3:45
For the group from Banu Khuzaymah
3:47
that had come to the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah
3:49
be upon him,
3:51
had conspired with a clan from Banu Hudhayl
3:53
to lure into their trap
3:55
a number of the Companions of the Prophet,
3:57
peace and blessings be upon him,
3:59
and hand them over to them
4:01
in exchange for a handsome sum
4:03
they had agreed upon.
4:05
Banu Hudhayl
4:07
had two captives held by Quraysh,
4:09
and they resolved to ransom
4:11
with some of these Companions
4:13
their two captives detained in Makkah,
4:15
and then sell the remainder
4:17
to whoever among Quraysh desired them,
4:19
so they might execute them in revenge
4:21
for their fathers, sons,
4:23
or distinguished leaders who were slain
4:25
at Badr.
4:27
When the caravan drew near the region of al-Raji',
4:29
the six Companions,
4:31
may Allah be pleased with them, were shocked
4:33
to find their companions from Banu Khuzaymah
4:35
abandoning them,
4:37
while a band from Hudhayl closed in
4:39
upon them, brandishing
4:41
swords and spears,
4:43
encircling them as tightly as a shackle
4:45
around a wrist.
4:47
Thereupon, the six Companions
4:49
dismounted from the backs
4:51
of their riding beasts, drew
4:53
their swords from their scabbards,
4:55
and resolved to fight those
4:57
who had confronted them.
4:59
But the men of Hudhayl said to them,
5:01
"We are the masters of this territory;
5:03
our numbers are overwhelmingly
5:05
vast, whereas your band
5:07
is small and meager.
5:09
Moreover, by the Lord of the Ka'bah, we intend
5:11
you no harm, nor do we plan
5:13
to put you to death;
5:15
rather, we only wish
5:17
to gain something through you from the people of Makkah,
5:19
and for this you have
5:21
the covenant and pledge of Allah."
5:23
The six men from the Companions of the Messenger,
5:25
peace and blessings of Allah
5:27
be upon him, were cast into profound distress,
5:29
no longer knowing
5:31
what course to take.
5:33
Then Allah willed that they should take
5:35
two different paths in this ordeal:
5:37
for indeed,
5:39
'Asim Ibn Thabit al-Ansari,
5:41
Marthad al-Ghanawi,
5:43
and Khalid al-Laythi chose
5:45
certain death over surrendering
5:47
to the enemies of Allah and their own enemies.
5:49
They said to one another,
5:51
"By Allah, we shall never accept a pact from a polytheist,
5:53
nor shall we ever agree
5:55
to a pledge from him."
5:57
Then they sprang forward, fighting Hudhayl
5:59
with fierce determination
6:01
until they fell slain, one
6:03
after another,
6:05
passing away as martyrs within a few
6:07
numbered minutes.
6:09
As for the other three men
6:11
among the Companions of the Messenger, peace and blessings
6:13
be upon him—
6:15
namely, 'Abdullah Ibn Tariq,
6:17
Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah, and Khubayb Ibn 'Adiy—
6:19
they trusted the pledge of this treacherous
6:21
band of Hudhayl
6:23
and surrendered to them.
6:25
When Hudhayl realized
6:27
that one of the three slain
6:29
was 'Asim Ibn Thabit al-Ansari,
6:31
they rejoiced at his death with the greatest
6:33
joy; this was because
6:35
'Asim, may Allah be pleased with him,
6:37
had killed on the Day of Uhud
6:39
two brothers who were knights
6:41
of Quraysh.
6:43
Their mother, Sulafah bint Sa'd, had vowed
6:45
that if she ever gained power over 'Asim,
6:47
she would drink wine
6:49
from the skull of his head,
6:51
and she promised to whoever brought him to her alive
6:53
or dead whatever they wished
6:55
of precious wealth.
6:57
So the men of Hudhayl stepped toward 'Asim Ibn
6:59
Thabit to sever his head,
7:01
They were buoying themselves with hope
7:03
for a generous reward,
7:05
but they found that swarms of bees
7:07
and colonies of wasps
7:09
had surrounded his body on every
7:11
side.
7:13
When they attempted to approach him,
7:15
the insects fended them off.
7:17
Some said to others,
7:19
"Leave him until night falls,
7:21
when the bees
7:23
and wasps will depart from him.
7:25
Then, we will sever his head
7:27
and take it to Makkah."
7:30
No sooner had darkness descended
7:32
upon the region of al-Raji‘ and its surroundings
7:34
than the sky thundered,
7:36
surged,
7:38
and poured down rain like water from the mouths of skins.
7:40
A flood covered the valleys,
7:42
the likes of which had never been seen.
7:44
The flood carried ‘Asim away
7:46
and swept him to places
7:48
far away that had not been trodden
7:50
by their feet before.
7:52
They searched for him everywhere,
7:54
but could not find him.
7:56
They scoured every direction for him,
7:58
but could not track him down.
8:00
They returned, burning
8:02
with frustration at having lost him.
8:04
‘Asim,
8:06
may Allah be pleased with him,
8:08
had made a covenant with Allah, the Almighty and Majestic,
8:10
saying, "O Allah, may I not touch a polytheist,
8:12
for as long as I live."
8:14
And he asked Him, the Glorified,
8:16
not to allow any polytheist
8:18
a way to touch him.
8:20
Thus, Allah fulfilled for ‘Asim
8:22
what he had covenanted with Him,
8:24
and answered his prayer.
8:26
‘Umar Ibn al-Khattab,
8:28
may Allah be pleased with him, used to say,
8:30
"Allah protects the believing servant."
8:32
‘Asim had vowed
8:34
that no polytheist would touch him,
8:36
and that he would not touch a polytheist in his life;
8:38
Allah protected him even after his death,
8:40
just as he had remained protected from them during his life.
8:42
The Hudhayl tribe set off
8:44
with their three captives toward
8:46
Makkah, after
8:48
they had snatched away the swords
8:50
that they were wearing,
8:52
and seized the spears
8:54
that were in their hands.
8:56
Then they loosened their bowstrings
8:58
and bound them with them.
9:00
‘Abdullah Ibn Tariq looked
9:02
at the bonds with which the Hudhayl had bound them
9:04
and said,
9:06
"This is the first act of treachery."
9:08
He began to wait for an opportunity
9:10
to be able to free himself
9:12
from them.
9:14
When he saw them distracted,
9:16
he pulled his hands from his bonds
9:18
and attempted to release his companions,
9:20
Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah
9:22
and Khubayb Ibn ‘Adi, from their bonds.
9:24
However, the Hudhayl
9:26
noticed him,
9:28
and they did not approach him for fear of
9:30
his strength and ferocity.
9:32
They did not let him escape,
9:34
but instead began pelting him with stones
9:36
until they killed him.
9:38
They left him where he lay
9:40
and then moved on
9:42
with Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah and Khubayb
9:44
Ibn ‘Adi until they reached
9:46
Makkah and presented them
9:48
to the people.
9:50
The vengeful, hateful ones
9:52
among the disbelievers of Quraysh rushed forward,
9:54
each wanting to secure the two captives,
9:56
no matter how high the price,
9:58
to use them to spite
10:00
Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
10:02
and to take revenge on them
10:04
for those killed at Badr.
10:06
They competed in offering exorbitant
10:08
prices for them.
10:10
Then one of the leaders of Quraysh stood up
10:12
and said, "O people of
10:14
Quraysh, do not compete
10:16
over these two captives
10:18
and drive up their price.
10:20
Rather, leave them for those
10:22
who have a blood feud against them,
10:24
for they are more entitled to them than others
10:26
and more deserving of taking them
10:28
than anyone else."
10:30
Safwan Ibn Umayyah bought Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,
10:32
may Allah be pleased with him,
10:34
for a high price,
10:36
to kill him in retaliation for his father, Umayyah Ibn Khalaf.
10:38
The sons of
10:40
al-Harith Ibn ‘Amir bought Khubayb,
10:42
may Allah be pleased with him,
10:44
to kill him in retaliation for their father,
10:46
whom he had killed at Badr.
10:48
They paid the Hudhayl
10:50
an exorbitant price.
10:52
Safwan Ibn Umayyah did not wait
10:54
long with his captive,
10:56
because of the hatred burning within his heart
10:58
for Muhammad,
11:00
may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.
11:02
He hastened to satisfy
11:04
the thirst of Quraysh for revenge
11:06
against the noble Messenger, peace be upon him,
11:08
through his person,
11:10
and to gladden the eyes of his people
11:12
with the spectacle of his execution.
11:14
He had resolved to kill him in the area of
11:16
al-Tan‘im
11:18
and cast his body there
11:20
for the stray dogs to maul
11:22
and the birds of prey
11:24
to feast upon.
11:26
He set a time for this and announced it in Makkah.
11:31
No sooner had the morning of that appointed day
11:33
dawned in the valley of Makkah
11:35
than the vengeful ones
11:37
among the disbelievers of Quraysh,
11:39
those who hated Muhammad,
11:41
may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and his message,
11:43
and the rabble of men,
11:45
women, and children
11:47
were swarming in groups
11:49
toward the area of al-Tan‘im,
11:51
outside the boundaries of the Haram.
11:53
They were driving
11:55
their captive before them, shackled
11:57
in chains,
11:59
to kill him there in the sight
12:01
of the people.
12:03
At the head of all these people
12:05
was Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb.
12:07
They prepared Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,
12:09
may Allah be pleased with him, for execution
12:11
and raised him on a high piece
12:13
of ground so that both old and young
12:15
could witness his death.
12:17
He faced death
12:19
with a steadfast heart and a
12:21
cheerful face.
12:23
Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb approached him
12:25
and said,
12:27
"I adjure you by Allah, O Zayd,
12:29
would you not love for Muhammad
12:31
to be in your place now,
12:33
and for his neck to be struck instead of yours,
12:35
so that we might set you free
12:37
to go safely and securely
12:39
to your family?"
12:41
Zayd smiled and said,
12:43
"By Allah, I would not love for even a thorn
12:45
to prick Muhammad and harm him,
12:47
while he is in the place
12:49
where he is now,
12:51
even if that meant I were set free
12:53
to be safe and secure
12:55
among my family."
12:57
The people’s anger intensified at his words,
12:59
and their shouting increased:
13:01
"Kill him!"
13:03
Abu Sufyan said,
13:05
"By Allah, I have never seen
13:07
anyone among the people love
13:09
anyone else as
13:11
the companions of Muhammad
13:13
love Muhammad." Then
13:15
they rushed upon him and broke his neck,
13:17
while he was testifying
13:19
that there is no god but Allah,
13:21
and that His Prophet and chosen one,
13:23
Muhammad, is the Messenger of Allah.
13:25
That was what happened
13:27
regarding the affair of Zayd Ibn al-Dathinah,
13:29
may Allah be pleased with him and grant him satisfaction.
13:31
As for his companion, Khubayb
13:33
Ibn ‘Adi, here is
13:35
his story. The family of
13:37
al-Harith kept Khubayb Ibn ‘Adi
13:39
in the darkness of a prison in their house,
13:41
And extended his imprisonment,
13:43
so he spent his days among them,
13:45
alternating between fasting and night prayers.
13:47
Whenever they looked at him,
13:49
the daughters and slave-girls of Al-Harith,
13:51
during the night or the day,
13:53
they found him to be either
13:55
bowing or prostrating,
13:57
or reciting the Book of Allah,
13:59
with his eyes overflowing
14:01
with tears, so their hearts softened
14:03
toward him,
14:05
and they almost forgot that he had killed
14:07
their father at Badr.
14:10
One of them narrated about him
14:12
after she embraced Islam,
14:14
saying, "Khubayb was detained
14:16
in our home,
14:18
and when the people resolved to kill him,
14:20
he asked me to give him a razor
14:22
to shave what is customary
14:24
for a Muslim to shave of his hair,
14:26
and to groom himself before being killed.
14:28
So I granted his request.
14:30
Then I became distracted from
14:32
a young toddler of mine,
14:34
who crawled toward him and sat
14:36
in his lap.
14:38
I was suddenly terrified to see the razor
14:40
in his hand while the boy
14:42
was sitting on his thigh!
14:44
What had I done?
14:46
Khubayb Ibn 'Adi could easily exact
14:48
his revenge by killing my child
14:50
before he himself was killed!
14:52
I panicked, and he saw the terror on my face,
14:54
so he turned to me
14:56
with tenderness and gentleness,
14:58
and said, 'Do you fear that
15:00
I would harm this child of yours?
15:02
By Allah, I would never do
15:04
such a thing.'
15:06
Then he added, saying,
15:08
'We, the community of Muslims, do not inflict
15:10
harm upon a young child,
15:12
or an elderly old man,
15:14
or a monk who has devoted himself
15:16
to worship.
15:18
Rather, we only fight those who aggress against us
15:20
and strive to drive us out
15:22
from our religion.'
15:24
She then said, 'By Allah,
15:26
I do not think there was ever a prisoner on the face
15:28
of the earth better than Khubayb.
15:30
By Allah, I saw him
15:32
eating from a large cluster
15:34
of grapes, the likes of which my eyes
15:36
had never seen before,
15:38
while there were no grapes to be eaten
15:40
anywhere in the land of Allah at that time!
15:42
And Khubayb at that time was
15:44
bound in iron chains,
15:46
so these grapes were nothing less than
15:48
sustenance that Allah had granted
15:50
him.'
15:52
And when the sons of Al-Harith resolved to
15:54
execute Khubayb Ibn 'Adi,
15:56
and announced it among the people,
15:58
all of Mecca marched out,
16:00
every last one of them, to the area of Al-Tan'im
16:02
to witness the execution
16:04
of their second captive.
16:06
When Quraysh brought him forward for execution,
16:08
he said to their leaders,
16:10
'If you see fit to allow me
16:12
to pray two rak'ahs, then do so.'
16:14
One of them felt pity
16:16
for him and said,
16:18
'Go ahead and pray two rak'ahs.'
16:20
So Khubayb performed two rak'ahs,
16:22
completing them fully and perfectly.
16:24
Then he turned to
16:26
the people and said,
16:28
'By Allah, were it not that you might think
16:30
I only prolonged my prayer out of dread
16:32
of being killed,
16:34
I would have prayed much more.'
16:36
The people raised Khubayb Ibn 'Adi
16:38
up to the crucifixion pole
16:40
and bound him securely to it.
16:42
When they prepared to kill him,
16:44
he said, 'O Allah,
16:46
we have conveyed the message
16:48
of Your Prophet, so convey to him
16:50
this morning what is being done to us.'
16:52
Then he supplicated against the polytheists
16:54
of Quraysh, saying:
16:56
'O Allah, count the disbelievers
16:58
of Quraysh in number,
17:00
destroy them piecemeal,
17:02
and leave not a single one of them.'
17:04
When Abu Sufyan heard
17:06
his supplication,
17:08
he threw his son Mu'awiyah to the ground
17:10
out of fear of his invocation,
17:12
as the Arabs used to do
17:14
in the Jahiliyyah.
17:16
Then they executed him,
17:19
and Khubayb joined his five brothers
17:21
who had preceded him,
17:23
passing on to his Lord,
17:25
well-pleased and pleasing to Him.
17:29
'May Allah send blessings upon those who
17:31
followed one another
17:33
on the day of Al-Raji',
17:35
so they were honored and rewarded.'
17:37
Hassan Ibn Thabit.
