was a young man in the full vigor of his youth,

robust in stature,

handsome in appearance, soft-spoken,

enjoying abundant blessings and living a life of luxury,

named Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr.

One day, this fresh young man made his way to the house of Al-Arqam ibn Abi al-Arqam,

fragrance wafting from his sleeves,

affluence evident on his face,
1:34
and his precious garment attesting to the vast wealth in which he lived.

The gentle, refined youth knocked lightly on the door,

and it was opened for him.

He entered the house shyly,

greeted the people with warmth and affability,

and then sat down where the assembly ended.

The people's eyes fixed upon him,

unable to believe what they were seeing;

for how often had they wished that Allah would guide this young man and his peers to what He had guided them to,

spare this radiant youth the punishment of the grave,

and protect him from the fierce heat of Hellfire.

The Noble Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set about warning and giving glad tidings;

whenever he issued a warning,

the hearts of his Companions were almost torn apart by the horror and blazes of the Fire,

and whenever he gave glad tidings,

their hearts soared with joy over Paradise and its eternal delights.

The noble Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

would recite to his Companions from time to time some of Allah's clear verses,

wherewith their hearts found happiness,

their souls attained tranquility,

and they would ask Allah for the triumph of Paradise's bliss and salvation from the torment of the Fire.

No sooner had the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, finished his exhortation

than the Qurayshite youth rose toward him unhurriedly,

drew near him gently, and said:

"I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah."

Then he extended his hand to the Supreme Prophet, peace be upon him,

and pledged allegiance to him to hear and obey in times of ease and hardship.

The youth concealed the news of his conversion from the people,

for he did not wish to distress his mother—who was devotedly fond of him—with the news of his abandoning her religion,

knowing full well her severe stubbornness and the extent of her persistence in disbelief.

Nor did he want Quraysh to find out about his acceptance of Islam,

knowing their determination to inflict harm on anyone who entertained the thought of renouncing their gods,

especially when it concerned a youth like him, who stood at the pinnacle of their nobility

and belonged to the most opulent of their elite.

The youth continued to frequent the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in secret,

finding joy in meeting him and drawing deep inspiration from his exhortations,

until 'Uthman ibn Talhah saw him praying one day

and spread the news among the people.

From that day, the ordeal of Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr began.

His parents disowned him

after failing to return him to the religion of his forefathers,

and they cut off their financial support from him,

until he became poorer than the poorest

and plunged into misery more severe than that of the destitute.

Quraysh confronted him,

imprisoning him for a long period,

mistreating him, and persisting relentlessly in his oppression.

They thought that by doing so they could turn him away from his religion,

but how could they achieve that

when the youth had already tasted the sweetness of faith?

When the Muslims migrated to Abyssinia

to escape the harm of Quraysh,

the Qurayshite youth was among the ranks of the emigrants.

Mus'ab fled with his religion to Abyssinia,

leaving behind the playgrounds of his childhood,

the haunts of his youth, and his noble lineage,

for a distant home, the loneliness of exile, and the hardship of poverty.

Yet all of that was trivial and light to him

compared to seeking the pleasure of Allah and the pleasure of His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

When Mus'ab returned from his first migration,

people did not recognize him,

to the point that they could barely identify him.

For the handsome, radiant youth

had been touched by severe hardship:

his clothes were now tattered

after having been vibrant and fine,

his skin had turned rough

after having been soft and tender,

and his face had grown emaciated

after having been smooth and luminous.

The Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, saw him approaching,

wearing a worn-out ram's skin

wrapped around his waist,

and he said to his Companions:

"Look at this youth whose heart Allah has illuminated.

I saw him between parents who fed him the finest food and drink,

but the love of Allah and His Messenger called him to what you see."

Then the earth constrained the Muslims once again,

and they suffered harm from Quraysh beyond their endurance,

so they migrated to Abyssinia in their second migration,

and Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr was also among the emigrants.

However, Mus'ab could not bear being separated from the noble Prophet, peace be upon him,

preferring to return to Makkah and endure the persecution of Quraysh over being away from the Prophet, peace be upon him.

Mus'ab attached himself to the Prophet, peace be upon him, like a shadow to its master,

drinking deeply of his guidance as Allah willed,

until he became one of the noble Companions who had memorized the Book of Allah best,

possessed the deepest understanding of Allah's law, and had gathered the most of the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

Then the first Pledge of 'Aqabah took place,

and the righteous pledgers returned to their people in Madinah,

calling them to the religion of guidance and truth.

Soon, however, they felt they needed an emissary

who was more knowledgeable than them in the Book and the Sunnah,

and better versed in the teachings of Islam.

So they sent word asking the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him,

to send them a man to teach them their religion.

He sent Mus'ab to them, may Allah be pleased with him,

who thus became the first emissary of Islam on the face of the earth.

Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr settled in Madinah

and began calling the people to Islam and instructing them in its rulings.

Mus'ab ibn 'Umayr was tireless and unceasing,

energetic and relentless,

and many people embraced Islam at his hands,

until there remained no household in Yathrib without a Muslim man or woman,

and he was even granted the honor of leading the very first Friday prayer in Madinah

before the Noble Messenger, peace be upon him, arrived there.

When the Hajj season arrived,

Mus'ab set out for Makkah accompanied by seventy Muslim men,

and they met the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, at 'Aqabah,

pledging to him their famous pledge.

The righteous pledgers then returned to their homes,

while Mus'ab remained with his Prophet, peace be upon him,

until Allah granted permission to the Muslims to migrate to Madinah,

whereupon he and 'Abdullah ibn Umm Maktum were the very first emigrants.

When the Messenger, peace be upon him, resolved

to battle Quraysh at Badr,

he organized his battalions and marshaled his forces:

he placed 'Ali ibn Abi Talib over the battalion of the Emigrants,

Al-Zubayr ibn al-'Awwam on the right wing of the army,

and Al-Miqdad al-Kindi on its left wing.

As for the white banner of the Messenger, peace be upon him,

handing it to him with his own noble hands.

Mus'ab received it with great honor,

carrying it at the forefront of the army with his head held high and his brow radiant,

defending it with the valor of true heroes.

Mus'ab carried it and marched with it before the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

The onslaught of Quraysh grew fierce against the Muslims,

to the point that they broke ranks and scattered away from their standard.

But Mus'ab stood his ground firmly beside his Prophet, peace be upon him,

neither wavering nor faltering.

one of the horsemen of the polytheists, charged at him

and struck him with his sword,

severing his hand, and the banner fell.

Mus'ab grasped it with his other hand,

whereupon the wretched horseman returned to the pious fighter

So he embraced it with his upper arms,

His brother, Abu al-Rum, then caught the banner and raised it,

Quraysh departed from the battlefield victorious,

and the Muslims returned to their martyrs to lay them to rest in the earth.

There lay Mus'ab, fallen on his face, both hands severed.

When the Muslims set out to bury the martyr,

they found nothing to shroud him with except a small garment:

if they covered his face, his feet were exposed,

and if they covered his feet, his face was exposed.

So the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, ordered

that his face be covered with the garment,

and that his feet be covered with wild sweet rush grass.

Then he stood over him and recited the words of Allah, the Mighty and Sublime:

"Among the believers are men who have been true to what they pledged to Allah. Some of them have fulfilled their vow..."

“Of the believers are men who are true to that which they covenanted with Allah. Some of them have paid their vow by death (in battle), and some of them still are waiting; and they have not altered in the least;” (33:23)
