0:25 may Allah have mercy upon him.

0:30 Simak Ibn Kharasha, may Allah be pleased with him.

0:47 This is the city of the Greatest Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

0:56 surging with activity,

0:58 in preparation for meeting the enemy.

1:00 These are the Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

1:04 moving to and fro in their iron armor like lions of the thicket,

1:09 glowing with a longing to attain martyrdom

1:12 and to win the pleasure of Allah.

1:15 And here is the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:18 emerging to the people, clad in his armor,

1:21 ready to meet the enemy of Allah and his own enemy.

1:25 No sooner did the eyes of the Muslims fall upon him

1:28 than their chests ignited with the fires of zeal,

1:32 and their hearts were kindled with determination and valor.

1:36 And here are those young, budding youths from among the Muhajirun and the Ansar,

1:41 approaching the noble Messenger, peace be upon him,

1:45 none of whom had passed their fifteenth year.

1:49 They were bracing their small frames,

1:52 puffing out their tender chests,

1:55 to appear as men before the Messenger, peace be upon him,

2:00 hoping that he would authorize them

2:03 and grant them the opportunity to fight under his banner

2:06 and to be martyred in the cause of Allah, close to him.

2:10 Once the crowds had gathered,

2:13 the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, raised his sword in his hand and said,

2:18 "Who will take this sword by its right?"

2:21 Many hands reached out toward him,

2:24 all of them wanting to win the sword of the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him,

2:29 and to be honored with it.

2:31 But the noble Messenger, peace be upon him, withheld it,

2:35 and said, "Who will take this sword by its right?"

2:39 Then men stood up to him, among them Umar Ibn al-Khattab,

2:43 al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awwam, and others.

2:46 He held it back,

2:48 until Simak Ibn Kharasha stood up to him,

2:51 a brother of the Banu Sa'ida,

2:53 known by the kunya Abu Dujana,

2:55 and said,

2:56 "And what is the right of your sword, O Messenger of Allah?"

2:59 He, peace be upon him, replied,

3:02 "That you fight with it in the cause of Allah

3:05 until Allah grants you victory or you are killed."

3:08 He said,

3:10 "I will take it by its right, O Messenger of Allah."

3:13 So he gave it to him.

3:15 At that, necks craned toward Abu Dujana,

3:19 to whom the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, had granted his sword,

3:24 preferring him over the elders of the Muhajirun and the knights of the Ansar.

3:29 Abu Dujana was not unknown in war

3:33 among the Companions of the Messenger, peace be upon him,

3:36 nor was his status obscure;

3:38 for they all acknowledged him as a brave warrior

3:42 who did not fear death.

3:44 They all knew his red bandana,

3:48 which he would tie around his head when the battle grew fierce.

3:51 The two armies met,

3:53 and they called it the "Bandana of Death."

3:56 They all marveled at the gait with which he strutted between the ranks

4:02 to challenge his peers.

4:04 Nevertheless, some of the noble Companions envied him for this distinction

4:10 which the Greatest Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, had granted him.

4:15 Let us leave the narration to one of them

4:18 to tell us the story of Abu Dujana

4:21 and the impact it had on him.

4:23 Al-Zubayr Ibn al-Awwam said,

4:25 "I felt a sense of grievance

4:27 when I asked the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, to give me his sword,

4:32 and he refused me,

4:34 but gave it to Abu Dujana.

4:36 I said to myself, 'I am the son of Safiyya bint Abd al-Muttalib,

4:40 the aunt of the Messenger, peace be upon him,

4:43 and I am at the pinnacle of Quraysh in lineage and glory.

4:48 I stood before him

4:50 and asked him to give me the sword before him,

4:53 yet he turned away from me and gave it to him.'

4:56 'By Allah, I will watch what he does with it.'

4:59 Then he set off, and I followed in his footsteps.

5:03 When he stood before the ranks of the polytheists,

5:06 he took out his red bandana and tied it around his head.

5:10 When the Ansar saw him,

5:12 they turned to one another and said,

5:15 'Abu Dujana has tied the Bandana of Death around his head.'

5:19 This is what they would say to him whenever he wore it.

5:24 Then he drew the sword of the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, with his right hand,

5:29 and began to walk with a strutting, proud gait between the ranks.

5:34 The Messenger, peace be upon him, looked at him and said,

5:38 'This is a gait that Allah and His Messenger detest,

5:42 except in this situation.'

5:44 Meaning the situation of meeting the enemies of Allah and His Messenger, peace be upon him.

5:49 Then Abu Dujana set off,

5:51 chanting a song that shook hearts,

5:55 and filled chests with zeal and chivalry.

5:59 Then he advanced toward the polytheists,

6:01 charging and maneuvering through their ranks,

6:04 and he would not encounter anyone but that he killed him.

6:07 There was a man in the army of the polytheists

6:11 who made it his habit to track the wounded Muslims

6:14 and finish them off one after another.

6:18 I saw Abu Dujana heading toward him,

6:21 and I saw the man drawing near to Abu Dujana,

6:24 so I prayed to Allah to bring them together,

6:27 and to make the death of this disbeliever at the hands of Abu Dujana.

6:32 It was not long before they met,

6:34 and they exchanged two blows with their swords in less than the blink of an eye.

6:39 Abu Dujana caught his opponent's blow with his shield,

6:43 which split the shield in two.

6:45 As for the blow of Abu Dujana,

6:47 it struck the polytheist in a fatal spot,

6:50 and he left him behind, swimming in his own blood.

6:54 He continued to charge through the ranks,

6:56 defending the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with his sword,

7:01 confronting his enemies.

7:03 I would see him at times to his right,

7:06 and at times to his left,

7:08 and at times in front of him or behind him.

7:12 Then Abu Dujana saw a person maneuvering among the ranks of the polytheists,

7:17 inciting their enthusiasm

7:19 and urging them to kill the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him.

7:24 He approached him and swung his sword at his head,

7:28 but he soon turned the sword away from him.

7:31 I approached him and asked him about that,

7:34 and he said,

7:36 'I realized that it was one of the women

7:39 whom Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb had brought with him to the battle,

7:44 so I honored the sword of the Greatest Messenger, peace be upon him,

7:48 too much to kill a woman with it.'

7:50 At that moment, I knew that the Messenger, peace be upon him,

7:54 had placed his sword in its rightful place,

7:57 and I said, 'Allah and His Messenger know best.'"

8:01 Abu Dujana continued to defend Islam and the Muslims

8:05 with the sword of the Prophet, peace be upon him,

8:08 as long as the noble Messenger, peace be upon him,

8:11 was alive.

8:13 When the Greatest Messenger, peace be upon him,

8:17 joined the Highest Companion,

8:19 Abu Dujana placed himself and his sword

8:22 in obedience to Abu Bakr al-Siddiq,

8:24 the Caliph of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

8:28 When the Banu Hanifa apostatized with the apostates,

8:31 and they began to leave the religion of Allah in droves,

8:35 and followed the false prophet Musaylima the Liar,

8:38 al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, prepared a large army for them,

8:43 in which he gathered the prominent Companions from the Muhajirun and the Ansar.

8:48 At their forefront was Abu Dujana,

8:51 the bearer of the sword of the Messenger of Allah, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him.

8:55 Then he entrusted the banner of the army to the Sword of Allah, Khalid Ibn al-Walid.

9:00 The soldiers of the Muslims poured upon the enemies of Allah with the force of a calamity,

9:05 and Musaylima and those with him stood against them like mountains.

9:09 Battles raged between the two parties that would turn the hair of children gray from their horror,

9:15 and the killing increased between the two sides.

9:18 Yet the high number of casualties only increased them

9:21 in zeal, unity, and ferocity.

9:24 Then it was not long before the tide turned in favor of the Muslims against their enemy,

9:29 after a long trial and intense hardship.

9:32 Musaylima the Liar and thousands upon thousands of his soldiers retreated

9:37 to the garden that became known thereafter as the Garden of Death.

9:42 They fortified themselves behind its impregnable walls,

9:46 and took cover behind its locked doors.

9:49 When the Muslims were exhausted by strategies,

9:52 al-Bara' Ibn Malik al-Ansari performed

9:55 the most daring heroic act known to the history of sacrifice on the face of the earth,

10:01 as he managed to open the gates of the garden to the Muslim soldiers.

10:06 The Companions of the Messenger, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him, surged

10:10 into the Garden of Death like a flood,

10:14 and descended upon those within it like the hand of fate.

10:18 Some of them entered the garden through its gates,

10:21 while others threw themselves over its walls.

10:26 Abu Dujana was one of them.

10:30 Abu Dujana threw himself into the garden from over one of its high walls,

10:36 and when he fell to the ground, his leg was broken.

10:40 He did not care about it, nor did he pay it any mind,

10:43 but rather he drew the sword of the Messenger of Allah, may the blessings and peace of Allah be upon him,

10:48 and began to cut through the ranks,

10:50 relying on his sound leg,

10:53 until he reached Musaylima the Liar.

10:56 He swung at him with a blow of his sword,

10:59 at the very moment that Wahshi Ibn Harb aimed

11:03 a strike at him with his spear.

11:05 The false prophet fell between them, slain and wallowing in his blood.

11:11 At that point,

11:12 the companions of Musaylima turned upon the knight who was fighting with one leg,

11:17 wanting to finish him off.

11:20 He continued to fight them, and they fought him,

11:23 until his strength failed,

11:25 and the sword blows and spear thrusts multiplied upon him,

11:29 and he fell as a martyr.

11:32 But Abu Dujana

11:34 did not close his eyes for the final time

11:37 until he saw the soldiers of the Muslims

11:40 raising the banners of Islam on the land of Yamama.

11:45 The Messenger, peace be upon him, gave him his sword,

11:53 and preferred him over the elders of the Muhajirun and the knights of the Ansar.
