0:11 An Abridgment of Sahih al-Bukhari.
0:17 Chapter: Concerning Whomever Among the Arabs Owns Slaves,
0:21 And Gifts, Sells,
0:22 Cohabits with, Ransoms,
0:24 Or Takes Their Offspring as Captives.
0:26 On the authority of Ibn 'Awn, who said:
0:29 I wrote to Nafi',
0:31 and he wrote back to me
0:33 that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
0:36 raided Banu al-Mustaliq
0:37 while they were heedless,
0:39 and their livestock was being watered at the water source.
0:42 He killed their fighting men,
0:44 captured their offspring,
0:47 and on that day gained Juwayriyah.
0:50 This was narrated to me by 'Abdullah ibn 'Umar,
0:53 who was in that army.
0:56 Commentary on the Hadith:
0:59 "Raided" (aghara)
1:01 means: he attacked his enemy and took spoils from them.
1:04 Banu al-Mustaliq
1:05 were a clan of the Khuza'ah tribe.
1:08 "Heedless" (gharun)
1:09 means: completely unaware;
1:11 that is, he took them by surprise and unawares.
1:14 "Their fighting men" (muqatilatahum)
1:16 refers to the combatants,
1:17 meaning the mature males capable of fighting.
1:21 Among the benefits of the hadith:
1:25 The apparent meaning of the hadith
1:26 indicates the permissibility of fighting disbelievers without a prior summons,
1:30 and it demonstrates the permissibility of taking the enemy by surprise in war.
1:35 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
1:38 I have never ceased to love Banu Tamim since three things
1:42 I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
1:46 saying about them;
1:47 I heard him say:
1:49 "They will be the sternest of my Ummah against the Dajjal."
1:53 He said:
1:54 And when their zakat arrived,
1:56 the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:
2:00 "This is the zakat of our people."
2:03 A captive woman from them was in the possession of 'A'ishah,
2:06 and he said:
2:08 "Manumit her,
2:09 for she is of the descendants of Isma'il."
2:13 Commentary on the Hadith:
2:17 Banu Tamim
2:18 are a major tribe belonging to Mudar.
2:21 "Since three things"
2:23 means: from the moment I heard these three virtues.
2:26 "The Dajjal"
2:27 is the False Messiah (al-Masih ad-Dajjal).
2:30 "Their sadaqat"
2:31 means: their zakat.
2:33 "The zakat of our people":
2:35 he attributed them to himself
2:37 because their lineage meets with his (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
2:41 in Ilyas ibn Mudar.
2:44 "A captive woman from them"
2:46 means: from Banu Tamim
2:48 "in the possession of 'A'ishah"
2:49 means: owned by 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
2:54 Among the benefits of the hadith:
2:58 It is derived from the hadith
3:00 that it is encouraged to offer the best in manumission and charity.
3:04 In the hadith is an immense virtue of Banu Tamim.
3:08 It also contains foretelling about the Dajjal,
3:11 as well as guiding one's family to noble matters.
3:16 Chapter: When a Slave Worships His Lord Well and Is Sincere to His Master.
3:22 On the authority of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both),
3:25 that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
3:29 "When a slave acts sincerely toward his master
3:32 and excels in worshipping his Lord,
3:34 he will have his reward twice over."
3:38 Commentary on the Hadith:
3:41 "Acts sincerely toward his master"
3:43 means: he is genuinely loyal and dutiful to him.
3:46 "Excels in worshipping his Lord":
3:48 excellence in worship is through sincerity and adhering to the Sunnah.
3:52 Among the benefits of the hadith:
3:56 The hadith guides toward giving every rightful person their due right.
4:01 It also contains an encouragement for the slave to act sincerely toward his master,
4:04 because he is a guardian over his master's wealth
4:06 and is accountable for what has been placed in his care.
4:09 It also highlights excelling in worship through sincerity and adherence to the Sunnah.
4:13 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
4:18 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
4:22 "The righteous enslaved servant receives a twofold reward.
4:26 By the One in Whose Hand is my soul,
4:28 were it not for jihad in the cause of Allah,
4:30 Hajj, and devotion to my mother,
4:33 I would have loved to die as a slave."
4:36 Commentary on the Hadith:
4:40 "The righteous enslaved servant":
4:43 that is, in worshipping his Lord and acting sincerely toward his master.
4:46 "By the One in Whose Hand is my soul"
4:49 is from the speech of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him).
4:53 "And devotion to my mother":
4:55 the name of Abu Hurayrah's mother
4:57 was Umaymah, in the diminutive form;
4:59 it is also said to be Maymunah,
5:01 and she was one of the female Companions whose Islam was established.
5:04 "Mamluk" means a slave.
5:07 Among the benefits of the hadith:
5:11 In the hadith is an indication that an enslaved person
5:14 is not obligated to perform jihad,
5:16 unless it becomes an individual obligation.
5:18 It also demonstrates the permissibility of swearing an oath without being asked to do so.
5:22 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
5:28 The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:
5:31 "How excellent is the state of one of them
5:33 who worships his Lord well
5:35 and acts sincerely toward his master!"
5:37 Commentary on the Hadith:
5:40 "Worships his Lord well":
5:43 excellence in worship is through sincerity and following the Sunnah.
5:47 Among the benefits of the hadith:
5:50 It is derived from the hadith
5:53 that one who fulfills all rights is commended.
5:56 It also highlights the virtue of a slave acting sincerely toward his master.
6:00 Chapter: Disapproval of Overbearing Conduct Toward Slaves,
6:06 And Saying:
6:07 "My Male Slave" or "My Female Slave."
6:10 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him),
6:14 who narrated from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)
6:17 that he said:
6:19 "None of you should say:
6:21 'Feed your lord,'
6:23 'Help your lord perform ablution,'
6:24 or 'Give drink to your lord.'
6:26 Rather, let him say:
6:27 'My master' or 'my patron.'
6:30 And none of you should say:
6:32 'My male slave' or 'my female slave';
6:34 rather, let him say:
6:36 'My young lad,' 'my young maid,' or 'my boy.'"
6:39 Commentary on the Hadith:
6:42 "Feed" is an imperative verb derived from feeding.
6:45 "Your lord":
6:47 "al-rabb" denotes the owner and master.
6:50 Among the benefits of the hadith:
6:54 It is derived from the hadith
6:56 that overbearing conduct toward slaves is disliked.
6:59 It also conveys the dislike of using the term "rabb" (lord) for a human master,
7:03 since man is a created servant who is required
7:06 to dedicate pure monotheism to his Creator,
7:08 so it is disliked for him to rival Him in this designation.
7:11 It also indicates the obligation of venerating Allah, the Exalted and Majestic,
7:14 and declaring His transcendence.
7:16 It also conveys the prohibition of words that lead to unlawful connotations.
7:22 Chapter: When One's Servant Brings Him His Food.
7:27 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah,
7:29 from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him),
7:31 who said:
7:33 "When the servant of one of you brings him his food,
7:35 then if he does not seat him with him,
7:37 let him give him a morsel or two morsels,
7:40 or a bite or two bites,
7:43 for he has taken upon himself its heat and preparation."
7:47 Commentary on the Hadith:
7:50 "If he does not seat him with him"
7:52 means: at his dining table.
7:54 "Let him give him"
7:55 means: let him hand over to him
7:57 "a morsel,"
7:58 meaning a small portion of the food that was prepared.
8:02 "He has taken upon himself its heat and preparation"
8:04 means: he undertook its preparation
8:06 and was exposed to the heat and hardship of cooking it.
8:11 Among the benefits of the hadith:
8:15 It is derived from the hadith
8:17 that noble manners are strongly encouraged.
8:20 It also shows the recommendation of sharing food,
8:23 especially with the person who prepared and carried it,
8:26 because he bore its heat and smoke,
8:29 his soul longed for it, and he smelled its aroma.
8:34 Chapter: When Striking a Slave,
8:36 One Must Avoid the Face.
8:39 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him),
8:42 from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said:
8:46 "When one of you fights,
8:48 let him avoid the face."
8:50 Commentary on the Hadith:
8:54 "Fights" means strikes.
8:56 "Let him avoid the face"
8:58 means: let him beware of striking the face.
9:01 Among the benefits of the hadith:
9:05 It is derived from the hadith
9:07 that avoiding striking the face in disciplinary measures, chastisement, and prescribed legal punishments applies a fortiori.
9:13 It also indicates the legitimacy of disciplining a servant and the like.
9:20 The Book of Gifts, Their Virtue, and Encouragement Toward Them.
9:24 "Gift" (al-hibah) means transferring ownership without compensation,
9:27 and "encouragement" (at-tahrid) means urging.
9:30 Chapter on Gifts, Their Merit, and Encouragement Towards Giving Them
9:36 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him),
9:40 from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said:
9:43 "O Muslim women,
9:46 let no female neighbor look down upon a gift from her neighbor,
9:49 even if it is merely the trotter of a sheep."
9:51 Commentary on the Hadith:
9:54 "Let her not look down upon," meaning: do not belittle it or deem it insignificant.
9:59 "Trotter" refers to the bone that carries very little meat.
10:03 Key Benefits of the Hadith:
10:07 Derived from this hadith is:
10:09 Encouragement to exchange gifts, even if modest in value,
10:11 because of how it fosters affection and removes rancor.
10:15 It also emphasizes avoiding extravagance or burdening oneself in gift-giving.
10:18 It furthermore provides guidance on maintaining good neighborly relations.
10:21 On the authority of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her),
10:26 that she said to 'Urwah,
10:28 "O my nephew,
10:30 we used to sight the crescent moon, then the next crescent moon,
10:34 three crescents across two full months,
10:37 without a single fire ever being kindled in the homes of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)."
10:42 I said, "O maternal aunt,
10:45 on what did you sustain yourselves?"
10:47 She replied, "The two black staples:
10:50 dates and water;
10:52 though in another narration: 'unless we were gifted some modest meat.'
10:56 Except that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had neighbors among the Ansar
11:02 who owned milch animals,
11:04 and they would send the Messenger of Allah some of their milk."
11:11 Commentary on the Hadith:
11:15 "Three crescents across two full months":
11:18 this is counted by sighting the crescent at the start of the first month,
11:22 then sighting it at the start of the second month,
11:25 and then sighting it at the start of the third month.
11:29 Thus, three crescents were truly sighted,
11:32 though the total duration elapsed was sixty days.
11:35 "Without a single fire ever being kindled"
11:38 is a metonymy for not cooking any food.
11:40 "On what did you sustain yourselves?"
11:42 Meaning: what was your sustenance and nourishment?
11:45 "Milch animals" (*mana'ih*):
11:46 a *manihah*
11:48 is a she-camel or a ewe
11:49 that a man lends to another to milk and then return.
11:53 "They would send" (*yamnahun*),
11:55 meaning: they would give.
11:57 Key Benefits of the Hadith:
12:00 Derived from this hadith is:
12:02 An illustration of the Prophet's asceticism (*zuhd*) regarding worldly life,
12:06 his contentment with mere bare subsistence,
12:08 and his preference for the Hereafter over this world.
12:11 The hadith also serves as proof for those who deem poverty preferable to wealth.
12:15 It illustrates the virtue of lending milch animals (*al-manihah*).
12:18 It provides guidance on caring for one's neighbors
12:21 and checking upon their welfare.
12:23 Chapter on Modest Gifts
12:29 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him),
12:31 from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), who said:
12:35 "If I were invited to a meal of a shoulder or a trotter,
12:38 I would surely accept;
12:39 and if a shoulder or a trotter were gifted to me, I would surely accept it."
12:44 Commentary on the Hadith:
12:47 "Shoulder" refers to the shoulder of a sheep,
12:51 and the shoulder is among the prime cuts of meat.
12:53 "Trotter" refers to the lower extremity of the sheep's leg,
12:58 which has very little meat on it.
13:00 Key Benefits of the Hadith:
13:04 Derived from this hadith is:
13:06 A demonstration of his remarkable humility (peace be upon him).
13:09 It also highlights the recommendation to accept an invitation,
13:12 even if it is for a modest amount of food.
13:14 It furthermore demonstrates the recommendation to accept gifts.
13:17 Chapter on Accepting Gifts of Game Meat
13:21 On the authority of Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
13:25 "We flushed a hare at Marr al-Zahran,
13:29 and the people pursued it until they grew exhausted.
13:31 I caught up with it and captured it,
13:34 then brought it to Abu Talhah.
13:37 He slaughtered it
13:38 and sent its haunch—or its two thighs—
13:42 to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
13:45 and he accepted it."
13:46 I asked, "And did he eat from it?"
13:49 He said, "Yes, he ate from it,"
13:51 and then confirmed after that: "He accepted it."
13:54 Commentary on the Hadith:
13:58 "We flushed," meaning: we startled it and roused it from its place.
14:02 "At Marr al-Zahran":
14:04 this is a valley in the Hijaz
14:06 located twenty-two kilometers north of Mecca.
14:11 "Until they grew exhausted," meaning: they became fatigued from running.
14:14 "I caught up with it," meaning: I overtook it.
14:18 "And captured it," meaning: I caught it while it was still alive.
14:22 "Its haunch" (*warik*): the haunch is the part above the thigh.
14:27 Key Benefits of the Hadith:
14:31 Derived from this hadith is:
14:34 The permissibility of pursuing game,
14:36 provided that the pursuit of game does not distract one so much
14:39 that it leads to missing the prayer or neglecting other religious and worldly obligations.
14:44 When a group pursues game,
14:47 whichever individual reaches it and captures it
14:50 becomes its sole owner,
14:51 and those who merely participated in the chase have no share in it.
14:55 It is entirely permissible for a person to gift a modest item to a companion,
15:00 even if the recipient is of high stature,
15:03 provided it is known that the recipient would welcome it from him.
15:07 It also establishes the permissibility of eating hare meat.
15:10 Chapter on Accepting Gifts
15:14 On the authority of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her),
15:17 that the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)
15:20 were divided into two groups:
15:22 one group comprised 'A'ishah, Hafsah,
15:25 Safiyyah, and Sawdah;
15:27 while the other group
15:29 comprised Umm Salamah
15:30 and the rest of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him).
15:34 The Muslims were well aware of the Messenger of Allah's deep love for 'A'ishah,
15:40 so whenever any of them had a gift
15:43 that he wished to present to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
15:48 he would hold it back until the Messenger of Allah was at 'A'ishah's house;
15:54 then the owner of the gift would send it to the Messenger of Allah while he was at 'A'ishah's house.
16:01 In another narration:
16:04 "The people used to choose 'A'ishah's day for sending their gifts,
16:09 seeking thereby the pleasure of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)."
16:16 Thereupon, the group of Umm Salamah spoke and said to her,
16:20 "Speak to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) so that he may tell the people:
16:25 'Whoever wishes to present a gift to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
16:31 let him send it to him wherever he may be among the homes of his wives.'"
16:35 So Umm Salamah spoke to him as they had requested,
16:39 but he said nothing to her.
16:41 They asked her, and she replied, "He said nothing to me."
16:45 They said to her, "Speak to him again."
16:48 She said: "So I spoke to him again when his turn brought him back to my room,
16:53 but he said nothing to me."
16:55 They asked her, and she replied, "He said nothing to me."
17:00 They said to her, "Keep speaking to him until he gives you an answer."
17:04 So when his turn brought him to her again, she spoke to him,
17:07 and he said to her, "Do not distress me concerning 'A'ishah,
17:11 for revelation has never descended upon me while under the garment of any woman except 'A'ishah."
17:17 In another narration: "For by Allah, revelation has never descended upon me
17:21 while under the blanket of any woman among you other than her."
17:25 She replied, "I repent to Allah from distressing you, O Messenger of Allah."
17:31 Then they summoned Fatimah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
17:37 and she sent word to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), saying:
17:42 "Your wives adjure you by Allah to maintain equity regarding the daughter of Abu Bakr."
17:47 She spoke to him, and he said,
17:50 "O my dear daughter, do you not love what I love?"
17:54 She replied, "Yes, indeed."
17:56 So she returned to them and informed them,
17:59 but they said,
18:00 "Go back to him!"
18:02 However, she refused to go back.
18:04 So they sent Zaynab bint Jahsh,
18:06 who came to him and spoke harshly,
18:08 saying:
18:10 "Your wives adjure you by Allah to maintain equity regarding the daughter of Ibn Abi Quhafah!"
18:15 She raised her voice until she turned upon 'A'ishah, who was sitting there,
18:19 and reviled her,
18:21 to the point that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) began looking at 'A'ishah
18:26 to see whether she would respond.
18:28 She said:
18:29 "So 'A'ishah spoke, answering Zaynab until she silenced her."
18:34 She said:
18:36 "Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) looked at 'A'ishah
18:40 and said,
18:41 'She is indeed the daughter of Abu Bakr!'"
18:44 Commentary on the Hadith:
18:49 "Wives," meaning his spouses.
18:51 "Two groups," meaning two factions,
18:54 each faction rallying in support of its members.
18:58 The other group consisted of five women:
19:02 Umm Salamah and the rest of the wives of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him),
19:06 namely: Zaynab bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her),
19:10 Maymunah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her),
19:14 Umm Habibah Ramlah bint Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with her),
19:19 and Juwayriyah bint al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with her).
19:23 "He would hold it back," meaning: he deferred it until that intended time.
19:27 "He said nothing to her," meaning: he gave no reply.
19:31 "When his turn brought him back to her,"
19:33 meaning: on her assigned day in her house.
19:36 "They used to choose" (*yataharrawna*), meaning: they deliberately aimed for.
19:39 *Taharrī* signifies deliberate intent, striving towards an aim,
19:43 and resolving to single out a matter in deed and word.
19:47 "Until he gives you an answer," meaning: until he delivers a response.
19:51 "Then they," referring to the other group among the wives of the Prophet (peace be upon him),
19:58 "summoned," meaning: they called upon her.
20:01 "She sent word," meaning: she dispatched a message.
20:04 "Your wives," referring to Umm Salamah and those with her.
20:09 "Adjure you by Allah," meaning: they entreat you by Allah.
20:13 "Equity," meaning: equal treatment between them and 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in all matters.
20:20 "O my dear daughter" (*yā bunayyah*):
20:22 this is a diminutive of affection and endearment.
20:24 "However, she refused to go back,"
20:26 meaning: she declined to return to the Prophet (peace be upon him)
20:30 to ask him for that again.
20:32 "So she came," meaning: she arrived.
20:35 "And spoke harshly," meaning: she was severe in her words and in demanding equal treatment.
20:40 "She turned upon," meaning: she confronted.
20:44 "So she verbally attacked her," meaning she scolded and refuted her.
20:48 "Indeed, she is the daughter of Abu Bakr."
20:50 Meaning that she is noble, intelligent, and insightful just like her father.
20:55 And it was said:
20:56 Its meaning is that she possesses a sharper understanding and a keener insight than her.
21:01 Among the benefits of the hadith:
21:05 It is derived from the hadith:
21:07 The permissibility of seeking out occasions and places pleasing to the recipient to offer gifts,
21:13 In order to increase their joy through that.
21:16 And in it is a clarification of the virtue of 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her.
21:20 And in it is that jealousy is a natural disposition, so long as it does not lead to something unlawful.
21:25 And in it is the recommendation of treating women gently,
21:28 And being considerate of a woman in her state of jealousy.
21:31 And the hadith indicates that a jealous woman is not held accountable for what she says in such moments.
21:37 And in it is that a man may remain silent when his wives argue with one another,
21:42 And he should not take sides against any of them.
21:45 And in it is the permissibility of voicing a grievance and sending messengers regarding it.
21:49 And in it is the permissibility of sending an intercessor and intermediary to convey a grievance.
21:53 And in it is what the wives of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, maintained
21:58 Of deep reverence and modesty before him,
22:01 To the extent that they sent the dearest of people to him,
22:04 Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her.
22:07 And in it is the boldness of Zaynab bint Jahsh, may Allah be pleased with her,
22:11 With the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
22:13 Because she was his cousin,
22:16 As her mother was Umaymah bint 'Abd al-Muttalib.
22:20 And the hadith indicates the Prophet's excusing
22:24 Zaynab, may Allah be pleased with her,
22:27 For he did not hold her to account for the jealousy that overtook her.
22:31 And in it is that justice between wives pertains to actions;
22:35 As for love, it is beyond religious obligation,
22:38 Because one has no control over it.
22:41 And the hadith indicates the virtue of Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with him.
22:45 And in it is the permissibility of retaliating in kind,
22:48 Just as 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, did.
22:51 And the hadith points to giving precedence to the love of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,
22:56 Above all else.
22:58 On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, who said:
23:03 Umm Hufayd—

24:41 If it was said, "Charity,"
24:43 He would say to his Companions:
