0:06 Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him

0:09 Chapter: The Virtue of Jihad

0:16 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

0:20 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

0:24 "There is no one wounded in the way of Allah—

0:28 but he will come on the Day of Resurrection with his wound bleeding;

0:33 its color will be the color of blood,

0:35 and its scent will be the scent of musk."

0:37 Agreed upon.

0:40 On the authority of Mu'adh, may Allah be pleased with him,

0:43 from the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, who said:

0:47 "Whoever fights in the way of Allah, even for the time it takes to milk a she-camel,

0:53 Paradise becomes mandatory for him.

0:55 And whoever sustains a wound in the way of Allah or suffers a misfortune,

1:00 it will come on the Day of Resurrection as deep as it was at its inception,

1:05 its color will be saffron and its scent will be like musk."

1:10 Narrated by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi.

1:13 "The time it takes to milk a she-camel"

1:16 refers to the interval between two milkings.

1:20 The intended meaning is a small amount of Jihad.

1:23 "Misfortune"

1:25 means any calamity that befalls a person.

1:30 From the benefits of the hadith:

1:32 Jihad and its reward are specific to the Muslim Ummah, to the exclusion of others.

1:39 The title of martyrdom and its honor are not attained by anyone other than the monotheistic members of this Ummah.

1:46 The reward for the one who strives in the way of Allah is Paradise,

1:51 provided he does not mix his deeds with the desires of this worldly life.

1:55 Regarding the accidents and trials that befall the martyr:

2:00 Allah the Exalted rewards him for them and does not let his deeds go to waste.

2:05 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

2:10 A man from the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, passed by

2:14 a mountain pass containing a spring of fresh water.

2:19 He was impressed by it,

2:20 and said,

2:22 "If only I could withdraw from the people and reside in this pass,

2:26 but I will not do so until I ask the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him."

2:32 He mentioned this to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:37 who said, "Do not do it,

2:40 for the standing of one of you in the way of Allah is better than his prayer in his house for seventy years.

2:48 Do you not love for Allah to forgive you and admit you into Paradise?

2:54 Fight in the way of Allah.

2:57 Whoever fights in the way of Allah for the time it takes to milk a she-camel, Paradise becomes mandatory for him."

3:03 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.

3:05 "The time it takes to milk a she-camel" is the interval between two milkings.

3:10 From the benefits of the hadith:

3:13 Knowledge comes before action.

3:16 That is why this Companion asked the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, about the matter before acting upon it.

3:24 The believer's desires are subordinate to the Shari'ah.

3:28 The etiquette of the Companions toward the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:33 was such that none of them would make a decision, even regarding his own private affairs,

3:39 until he presented it to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

3:44 The concern of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, that his Ummah attain goodness and virtue,

3:53 and that they receive a great reward from Allah the Exalted.

3:57 Therefore, he guided this Companion to that which contains great reward,

4:02 abundant goodness, and the highest ranks.

4:06 Jihad in the way of Allah is superior to voluntary prayer by many degrees.

4:13 Allah the Exalted has guaranteed Paradise for the one who is killed in His way, seeking nothing but His Countenance,

4:20 and who fights only so that the word of Allah may be supreme.

4:26 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

4:31 It was said, "O Messenger of Allah, what is equivalent to Jihad in the way of Allah?"

4:37 He said, "You cannot do it." He repeated the question twice or three times,

4:44 and each time he said, "You cannot do it."

4:49 Then he said, "The likeness of the one who strives in the way of Allah

4:54 is like the one who fasts, stands in prayer, and is devoutly obedient to the verses of Allah,

4:59 never flagging in his fasting or prayer,

5:02 until the one who strives in the way of Allah returns."

5:06 Agreed upon, and this is the wording of Muslim.

5:11 In a narration by al-Bukhari, a man said, "O Messenger of Allah,

5:16 guide me to a deed that is equivalent to Jihad."

5:20 He said, "I do not find it."

5:23 Then he said, "Are you able, when the one who strives goes out,

5:28 to enter your mosque, stand in prayer without flagging,

5:32 and fast without breaking your fast?"

5:35 He replied, "Who is able to do that?"

5:40 "Standing in prayer" means the one who exerts himself.

5:45 "Devoutly obedient" means the one who is submissive and obedient.

5:48 "Never flagging" means he does not become heedless or weak.

5:53 From the benefits of the hadith:

5:57 The glorification of the matter of Jihad,

5:59 because it is equivalent to all the virtuous deeds mentioned.

6:04 The virtues of deeds are not grasped by analogy;

6:09 rather, they are a grace and favor from Allah the Exalted to whom He wills.

6:16 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him:

6:19 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

6:23 "Among the best of people's livelihoods for them

6:26 is a man holding the reins of his horse in the way of Allah,

6:31 flying upon its back;

6:33 whenever he hears a cry or a call for alarm, he flies upon it,

6:38 seeking death and being killed where it is expected.

6:42 Or a man with his sheep on a mountain peak among these peaks,

6:47 or in the bottom of a valley among these valleys,

6:51 establishing prayer, giving zakat,

6:54 and worshipping his Lord until certainty (death) comes to him.

6:58 He is not among the people except in goodness."

7:02 Narrated by Muslim.

7:04 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him:

7:08 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

7:12 "Indeed, in Paradise there are one hundred levels

7:15 which Allah has prepared for those who strive in the way of Allah;

7:19 the distance between two levels is like the distance between the heaven and the earth."

7:24 Narrated by al-Bukhari.

7:27 From the benefits of the hadith:

7:30 A clarification of the virtue of Jihad in the way of Allah.

7:35 A clarification of the greatness of Paradise and the bliss within it,

7:39 which Allah has prepared for those who strive.

7:42 An indication that this level

7:45 might be attained by a servant who is not a fighter,

7:49 either through intention,

7:52 or through righteous deeds.

7:54 Because he, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded everyone

7:58 to pray to enter the highest Firdaws,

8:02 and this was after informing them that He had prepared it for those who strive.

8:07 A clarification of the stations of Paradise and that they are levels;

8:12 every person takes his place therein according to his deeds.

8:17 On the authority of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him:

8:22 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

8:26 "Whoever is pleased with Allah as Lord,

8:29 with Islam as a religion,

8:31 and with Muhammad as a Messenger,

8:34 Paradise becomes mandatory for him."

8:36 Abu Sa'id was amazed by this,

8:39 and said,

8:40 "Repeat it for me, O Messenger of Allah."

8:43 He repeated it for him,

8:45 then said,

8:47 "And another thing by which Allah raises the servant

8:50 one hundred levels in Paradise,

8:52 the distance between every two levels

8:55 is like the distance between the heaven and the earth."

8:58 He said,

9:00 "And what is it, O Messenger of Allah?"

9:03 He said,

9:04 "Jihad in the way of Allah,

9:07 Jihad in the way of Allah."

9:10 Narrated by Muslim.

9:12 From the benefits of the hadith:

9:16 The love of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

9:20 for knowing goodness, its doors, and its causes.

9:24 The glorification of the matter of Jihad in the way of Allah.

9:28 On the authority of Abu Bakr ibn Abi Musa al-Ash'ari, who said:

9:33 I heard my father, may Allah be pleased with him,

9:36 while in the presence of the enemy, saying:

9:39 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

9:43 "Indeed, the gates of Paradise are under the shadows of swords."

9:47 A man in tattered clothes stood up and said,

9:52 "O Abu Musa,

9:54 did you hear the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, say this?"

10:00 He said, "Yes."

10:02 He returned to his companions and said,

10:05 "I bid you peace."

10:09 Then he broke the scabbard of his sword and threw it away,

10:12 then walked with his sword toward the enemy and struck with it until he was killed.

10:18 Narrated by Muslim.

10:20 "Tattered clothes"

10:23 means old garments.

10:25 "Scabbard of his sword"

10:27 means its sheath.

10:30 From the benefits of the hadith:

10:32 The Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

10:36 are those who convey knowledge from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

10:41 just as they heard it.

10:44 The encouragement and incitement to Jihad in the way of Allah, both in word and deed.

10:49 The belief of the people of Islam in the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

10:55 and what they reported from him without dispute.

10:58 This indicates the acceptance of the report of a single narrator in matters of creed and legal rulings.

11:05 He was certain of entering Paradise based on a description,

11:08 so he hastened to apply it and did not hesitate in his action.

11:12 The permissibility of showing courage and boldness,

11:15 either by breaking the sword's scabbard,

11:18 as a sign of his fighting until death,

11:21 or by wearing a headband,

11:23 like Abu Dujanah.

11:25 An indication of his lack of fear of death.

11:31 On the authority of Abu 'Abs,

11:33 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jabr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

11:36 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

11:40 "A servant whose feet are covered with dust in the way of Allah will not be touched by the Fire."

11:45 Narrated by al-Bukhari.

11:48 From the benefits of the hadith:

11:51 Whoever gets dust on his feet in the way of Allah, the Fire will not touch him.

11:57 An indication of the great status of Jihad in the way of Allah.

12:01 If the mere touching of dust to the feet makes the Fire forbidden for them,

12:06 then what of the one who exerted his effort and exhausted his capacity?

12:10 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

12:15 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

12:19 "A man who wept out of fear of Allah will not enter the Fire

12:23 until the milk returns to the udder.

12:26 And the dust of the way of Allah and the smoke of Hell will never gather on a servant."

12:32 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.

12:36 On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said:

12:40 I heard the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, saying:

12:45 "Two eyes will not be touched by the Fire:

12:48 an eye that wept out of fear of Allah,

12:51 and an eye that spent the night keeping watch in the way of Allah."

12:55 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.

12:59 From the benefits of the hadith:

13:02 The virtue of standing guard in the cause of Allah to protect the frontiers of the Muslims.

13:07 And repelling the enemy lying in wait for the Muslims.

13:11 The virtue of weeping out of fear of Allah.

13:14 On the authority of Zayd Ibn Khalid, may Allah be pleased with him.

13:20 That the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

13:24 "Whoever equips a warrior in the cause of Allah has himself fought."

13:29 "And whoever looks after the family of a warrior in his absence with kindness has himself fought."

13:34 Agreed upon.

13:36 On the authority of Abu Umamah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

13:40 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

13:44 "The best of charities is..."

13:46 "...providing a tent in the cause of Allah,"

13:49 "...or gifting the service of a servant in the cause of Allah,"

13:52 "...or the loan of a breeding stallion in the cause of Allah."

13:56 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.

13:59 A 'fustat' is...

14:01 ...a tent made of hair.

14:03 A 'taruqah' is...

14:06 ...a she-camel that has reached the age to be covered by a stallion.

14:10 Among the benefits of the hadith:

14:14 The obligation of cooperation among Muslims to equip the armies of the Muslims for fighting in the cause of Allah.

14:21 So that the word of Allah may be supreme.

14:24 The best of charities, the greatest of acts of drawing near to Allah, and the most sublime of acts of obedience...

14:29 ...are those performed in the cause of Allah.

14:31 Because it is a benefit that extends to the entire Muslim community.

14:36 On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him:

14:40 A man from the Aslam tribe said:

14:42 "O Messenger of Allah,"

14:44 "I wish to go on a military expedition, but I do not possess the means to equip myself."

14:49 He said:

14:51 "Go to such-and-such a person,"

14:53 "For he had equipped himself but then fell ill."

14:56 So he went to him and said:

14:58 "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, sends you his greetings and says,"

15:04 "'Give me the equipment you prepared.'"

15:07 He said:

15:08 "O so-and-so,"

15:09 "Give him what I had prepared."

15:12 "And do not withhold anything from him."

15:15 "For by Allah, if you do not withhold anything from it,"

15:18 "Allah will bless it for you."

15:20 Narrated by Muslim.
