Riyadh Al-Salehin | Episode (110) | Chapter on the desirability of shaking hands

0:00 Riyadh al-Salihin, from the words of the Master of the Messengers, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:09 Chapter: The desirability of shaking hands upon meeting, having a cheerful face, kissing the hand of a righteous person, and kissing one's child out of affection.

0:22 And embracing one who has returned from a journey, and the dislike of bowing.

0:27 On the authority of Abu al-Khattab Qatadah, who said: I asked Anas, "Did the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, shake hands?"

0:40 He said, "Yes." Narrated by al-Bukhari. From the benefits of the hadith:

0:47 Shaking hands is a recommended Sunnah and a legislated custom that contains no harm and no opposition to the law.

0:57 Rather, it is a Sunnah upon which there is consensus when meeting.

1:03 On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: When the people of Yemen arrived, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

1:12 "The people of Yemen have come to you, and they are the first to introduce handshaking."

1:18 Narrated by Abu Dawud.

1:21 From the benefits of the hadith: The desirability of mentioning a Muslim's good qualities so that others may emulate them.

1:30 On the authority of al-Bara', may Allah be pleased with him, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

1:38 "There are no two Muslims who meet and shake hands but that they are forgiven before they part."

1:47 Narrated by Abu Dawud.

1:50 On the authority of Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: A man said, "O Messenger of Allah,

1:56 if one of us meets his brother or friend, should he bow to him?" He said, "No."

2:03 He asked, "Should he embrace him and kiss him?"

2:07 He said, "No."

2:09 He asked, "Should he take his hand and shake it?"

2:13 He said, "Yes."

2:15 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.

2:17 From the benefits of the hadith:

2:21 The obligation to ask about a legal ruling for one who is ignorant of it and fears falling into what is forbidden.

2:27 It teaches callers to the path of Allah not to become angry when asked about a ruling involving a prohibition.

2:32 Rather, one should answer the questioner according to the scope of his question.

2:36 A scholar should not become annoyed by the frequency of people's questions regarding legal rulings,

2:43 even if the question is repeated regarding the same ruling.

2:47 The prohibition of bowing to someone arriving, even if he is a leader of the people or otherwise.

2:52 Al-iltizam, which is embracing,

2:56 is not permissible except in situations exempted by the Shari'ah,

3:00 such as bidding farewell to a traveler or welcoming him.

3:03 The legitimacy of shaking hands, and that it is done with the hand.

3:09 On the authority of Safwan ibn 'Assal, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

3:14 A Jew said to his companion,

3:17 "Take us to this Prophet."

3:20 So they came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:24 and asked him about nine clear signs.

3:28 He mentioned the hadith until the point where he said:

3:31 "So they kissed his hand and his foot and said,

3:35 'We bear witness that you are a Prophet.'"

3:39 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.

3:41 The nine clear signs

3:44 are what were mentioned in the same hadith according to al-Tirmidhi:

3:47 "Do not associate anything with Allah,

3:50 do not steal, do not commit adultery,

3:53 do not kill a soul which Allah has forbidden except by right,

3:58 do not falsely accuse an innocent person to a ruler so that he may kill him,

4:02 do not practice sorcery, do not consume usury,

4:06 do not slander a chaste woman,

4:08 and do not flee from the battlefield."

4:11 "And specifically for you, O Jews,

4:15 do not transgress the Sabbath."

4:18 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, answered

4:21 regarding the nine things they asked about,

4:23 which were shared between the Muslims and the Jews,

4:27 and he added the tenth, which was specific to them.

4:30 They had kept it hidden in their hearts,

4:33 so he answered them regarding it as an increase in the evidence of his miracle.

4:38 From the benefits of the hadith:

4:41 The permissibility of kissing the hands or feet of those who are believed to be pious and righteous,

4:47 and from whom blessings are hoped for,

4:49 as this was done with him, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:53 and he did not disapprove of it.

4:55 On the authority of Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, there is a story in which he said:

5:01 "We drew near to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:05 and we kissed his hand."

5:07 Narrated by Abu Dawud.

5:09 The story

5:12 is what was narrated by Abu Dawud at the end of the Book of Jihad,

5:16 on the authority of Abu Layla,

5:18 that Ibn 'Umar narrated

5:20 that he was in one of the military expeditions of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

5:26 He said:

5:27 "The people fled in a panic,

5:30 and I was among those who fled."

5:32 This was during the Battle of Mu'tah.

5:35 "When we emerged, we said,

5:38 'What shall we do? We have fled from the battlefield

5:41 and incurred the wrath of Allah.'

5:43 So we said,

5:44 'Let us enter Medina and sneak into it so we can go,

5:48 and no one will see us.'"

5:50 He said:

5:51 "So we entered,

5:53 and we said,

5:54 'If we present ourselves to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:59 and if there is a repentance for us, we shall stay;

6:03 and if it is otherwise, we shall leave.'"

6:06 He said:

6:07 "So we sat for the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, before the dawn prayer.

6:13 When he came out, we stood up to him and said,

6:17 'We are the ones who fled.'

6:19 He turned to us and said,

6:22 'Rather, you are the ones who return to fight (al-'akkarun).'"

6:25 The rest of it is what was mentioned in the hadith.

6:28 From the benefits of the hadith:

6:31 The permissibility of kissing the hand of a godly scholar and one's parents,

6:37 provided it is not taken as a constant habit.

6:40 On the authority of 'A'ishah, may Allah be pleased with her, who said:

6:45 Zayd ibn Harithah arrived in Medina,

6:48 and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, was in my house.

6:52 He came to him and knocked on the door,

6:55 and the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, stood up to him, dragging his garment,

7:00 and embraced him and kissed him.

7:04 Narrated by al-Tirmidhi.

7:06 From the benefits of the hadith:

7:09 The permissibility of kissing and embracing one who has arrived from a journey,

7:13 unless there is a fear of temptation.

7:15 Hastening to meet those one loves

7:18 when one senses their arrival.

7:22 The virtue of Zayd ibn Harithah, may Allah be pleased with him,

7:25 and the love of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for him.

7:29 On the authority of Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

7:34 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said to me:

7:38 "Do not belittle any good deed,

7:41 even if it is meeting your brother with a cheerful face."

7:45 Narrated by Muslim.

7:47 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

7:52 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, kissed al-Hasan ibn 'Ali, may Allah be pleased with them both.

7:58 Al-Aqra' ibn Habis said,

8:01 "I have ten children,

8:03 and I have never kissed any of them."

8:06 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said,

8:10 "He who does not show mercy will not be shown mercy."

8:14 Agreed upon.
