is, firstly, that they might gain practice through tending them

because in interacting with them, they acquire forbearance and compassion.

For when they patiently endure tending them,

gathering them after they have scattered in the pasture,

moving them from one grazing ground to another,

and defending them against predators and the like,

and learning their varying temperaments and their tendency to scatter,

despite their weakness and need for constant care,

they become accustomed to patience with the Ummah.

They learn the differences in their temperaments and the variations in their intellects,

so they mend their brokenness and are gentle with the weak among them,

and they provide them with excellent care.

Thus, their endurance of the hardship involved in that

becomes easier than if they had been tasked with it from the very first moment,

due to the gradual training they received through tending sheep.
