1:47 and 'Amr ibn al-'As ibn Wa'il al-Sahmi.
1:50 They gave them their instructions, saying:
1:54 "Give every patriarch his gift before you speak to the Negus about them."
2:00 "Then present the Negus with his gifts."
2:04 "Then ask him to surrender them to you before he speaks to them."
2:09 She, may Allah be pleased with her, said:
2:11 So they departed and arrived at the Negus.
2:15 We were with him in the best of homes and under the best of neighbors.

2:22 to whom they did not give his gift before speaking to the Negus.
2:27 Then they said to each of the patriarchs:
2:31 "Some foolish youths from among us have fled to the King’s land."
2:36 "They have abandoned the religion of their people and have not entered into your religion."
2:40 "They have brought a novel religion that neither we nor you recognize."
2:46 "We have been sent to the King regarding them by the nobles of their people to return them to them."
2:52 "So when we speak to the King about them,"
2:54 "advise him to surrender them to us and not to speak to them,"
2:59 "for their people are more observant of them,"
3:02 "and more knowledgeable about what they have criticized them for."

5:28 He asked them, saying:

5:39 She, may Allah be pleased with her, said:
5:42 The one who spoke to him was Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him.
5:47 He said to him:
5:48 "O King,"
5:50 "we were a people of ignorance (Jahiliyyah),"
5:53 "worshipping idols, eating dead meat,"
5:56 "committing indecencies, severing ties of kinship, and mistreating our neighbors."
6:01 "The strong among us would devour the weak."
6:04 "We were in that state,"
6:05 "until Allah sent to us a Messenger from among ourselves,"
6:09 "whose lineage, truthfulness, trustworthiness, and chastity we know."
6:14 "He called us to Allah, to affirm His Oneness and worship Him,"
6:18 "and to cast aside the stones and idols that we and our fathers used to worship besides Him."
6:25 "He commanded us to speak the truth, to fulfill trusts,"
6:28 "to maintain ties of kinship, and to be good neighbors."
6:31 "He commanded us to refrain from forbidden things and bloodshed."
6:34 "He forbade us from indecencies, speaking falsehoods,"
6:37 "consuming the wealth of orphans,"
6:39 "and slandering chaste women."
6:41 "He commanded us to worship Allah alone, associating nothing with Him."
6:46 "He commanded us to pray, to give zakat, and to fast."
6:49 He enumerated for him the matters of Islam.
6:53 "So we believed in him and trusted him,"
6:55 "and we followed him in what he brought."
6:58 "We worshipped Allah alone,"
7:00 "associating nothing with Him."
7:03 "We declared forbidden what he forbade for us,"
7:05 "and we declared lawful what he permitted for us."
7:08 "Then our people turned against us,"
7:10 "persecuting us and trying to force us away from our religion,"
7:14 "to return us to the worship of idols from the worship of Allah,"
7:18 "and to make us consider lawful the evil things we used to consider lawful."
7:22 "When they oppressed us, treated us unjustly,"
7:25 "and made life difficult for us,"

8:08 And his bishops wept until they soaked their scriptures,
8:12 when they heard what he recited to them.

8:17 "Indeed, this and what Musa (Moses) brought"

8:25 "for by Allah, I will never surrender them to you."

8:44 'Abdullah ibn Abi Rabi'ah said to him,

8:57 "By Allah, I will tell him that they claim 'Isa ibn Maryam is a servant."

9:10 "O King,"
9:11 "they say a grave thing about 'Isa ibn Maryam."
9:16 "Send for them and ask them what they say about him."
9:20 So he sent for them to ask them about him.
9:23 Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, said:
9:26 Never had we been in such a difficult situation.
9:28 The people gathered,
9:30 and they said to one another:
9:32 "What will you say about 'Isa when he asks you about him?"
9:36 They said:
9:38 "We will say, by Allah, what Allah has said,"
9:41 "and what our Prophet, peace be upon him, has brought,"
9:45 "whatever the outcome may be."
9:49 When they entered upon him, he said to them:
9:52 "What do you say about 'Isa ibn Maryam?"
9:55 Ja'far ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said to him:
9:59 "We say about him what our Prophet, peace be upon him, brought:"
10:04 "He is the servant of Allah and His Messenger,"
10:07 "His spirit and His word, which He cast into Maryam, the chaste virgin."
10:13 She said:
10:14 The Negus struck his hand against the ground,
10:17 picked up a twig, and said:
10:20 "'Isa ibn Maryam does not exceed what you have said by even this twig."
10:25 His patriarchs began to murmur around him when he said what he said.
10:30 He said, "Even if you murmur, by Allah!"
10:33 "Go, for you are safe in my land."
10:37 "And 'suyum' means the safe ones."
10:39 "Whoever insults you will be fined,"
10:42 "whoever insults you will be fined,"
10:44 "whoever insults you will be fined."
10:47 "I would not like to have a mountain of gold"
10:50 "and have harmed one of you."
10:53 "And 'dabar' in the Abyssinian language means a mountain."

11:02 "For by Allah, Allah did not take a bribe from me when He restored my kingdom to me,"
11:07 "so I will not take a bribe regarding them."
11:09 "And the people did not obey me regarding Him, so I will not obey them regarding Him."
11:13 She said:
11:14 They both departed from his presence in disgrace.
11:17 Everything they had brought with them was rejected.
11:21 We remained with him in the best of homes and with the best of neighbors.
11:28 The stay of the Companions in Abyssinia.
11:32 Ja'far Ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) remained.
