1:05 And said to them:

1:07 'Which of you is Muhammad?'

1:09 The Prophet (peace be upon him) was

1:11 Reclining among them.

1:13 So we said:

1:15 'This fair-complexioned man who is reclining.'

1:17 The man said to him:

1:19 'O Son of Abd al-Muttalib!'

1:21 The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied:

1:25 'I am listening to you.'

1:27 The man said to the Prophet (peace be upon him):

1:31 'I am going to ask you, and I will be harsh in questioning you,

1:35 So do not harbor any resentment against me.'

1:37 The Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

1:41 'Ask whatever seems fit to you.'

1:43 He said:

1:45 'I ask you by your Lord and the Lord of those before you:

1:47 Did Allah truly send you to all mankind?'

1:51 The Prophet (peace be upon him) answered:

1:55 'By Allah, yes!'

1:57 He said:

2:00 'I adjure you by Allah:

2:02 Did Allah command you that we perform the five daily prayers throughout the day and night?'

2:08 The Prophet (peace be upon him) answered:

2:12 'By Allah, yes!'

2:14 He said:

2:16 'I adjure you by Allah:

2:18 Did Allah command you to fast this month of the year?'

2:22 The Prophet (peace be upon him) answered:

2:24 'By Allah, yes!'

2:26 He said:

2:28 'I adjure you by Allah:

2:30 Did Allah command you to collect this zakat from our wealthy

2:35 And distribute it among our poor?'

2:38 The Prophet (peace be upon him) answered:

2:42 'By Allah, yes!'

2:44 The man then said:

2:46 'I believe in all that you have brought,

2:48 And I am an emissary of those whom I left behind of my people.

2:51 I am Dimam ibn Tha'labah,

2:54 A brother of the clan of Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr.'"

2:56 And in another narration in the Musnad of Imam Ahmad with a good chain of transmission,

3:01 On the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said:

3:06 "Banu Sa'd ibn Bakr dispatched Dimam ibn Tha'labah as an emissary to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

3:14 He arrived before him,

3:16 Made his camel kneel at the gate of the mosque, tethered it,

3:20 And then entered the mosque

3:22 While the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was sitting among his Companions.

3:27 Dimam was a sturdy, hairy man with two braids.

3:32 He approached until he stood over the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who was surrounded by his Companions,

3:38 And asked, 'Which of you is the son of Abd al-Muttalib?'

3:43 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied,

3:46 'I am the son of Abd al-Muttalib.'

3:49 He said, 'O Muhammad!'

3:52 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied,

3:55 'Yes.'

3:57 He said, 'O son of Abd al-Muttalib!

4:00 I am going to question you and be stringent in my questioning,

4:04 So do not hold any offense in your heart.'

4:06 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said,

4:10 'I feel no offense;

4:12 Ask whatever you wish.'

4:15 He said, 'I adjure you by Allah, your God,

4:18 The God of those before you,

4:20 And the God of whoever shall come after you:

4:23 Did Allah truly dispatch you to us as a messenger?'

4:27 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) answered,

4:30 'By Allah, yes!'

4:33 He said, 'I adjure you by Allah, your God,

4:36 The God of those before you,

4:38 And the God of whoever shall come after you:

4:41 Did Allah command you to enjoin upon us

4:44 That we worship Him alone without associating anything with Him,

4:48 And that we cast off these false rivals that our forefathers used to worship beside Him?'

4:53 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) replied,

4:57 'By Allah, yes!'

4:59 He said, 'I adjure you by Allah, your God,

5:04 The God of those before you,

5:06 And the God of whoever shall come after you:

5:09 Did Allah command you that we perform these five daily prayers?'

5:13 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) answered,

5:17 'By Allah, yes!'

5:19 He [Ibn Abbas] said:

5:21 Then he proceeded to mention the obligatory duties of Islam, one by one:

5:25 Zakat, fasting, Hajj,

5:28 And all the ordinances of Islam,

5:31 Adjuring him concerning each obligation just as he had adjured him regarding the previous one.

5:37 When he had finished, he declared:

5:39 'I bear witness that there is no god but Allah,

5:43 And I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah.

5:46 I shall fulfill these obligatory duties

5:49 And shun whatever you have forbidden me,

5:52 Adding nothing and omitting nothing.'

5:55 He then turned around to return to his camel.

5:58 As he turned away, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

6:03 'If the one with the two braids has spoken the truth, he will surely enter Paradise.'

6:07 He [the narrator] said:

6:09 So he went to his camel, untied its tether,

6:12 And departed until he returned to his people.

6:15 They gathered around him,

6:17 And the very first words he uttered were:

6:21 'Vile are al-Lat and al-Uzza!'

6:24 They cried:

6:25 'Stop, O Dimam!

6:27 Beware of leukoderma and leprosy!

6:29 Beware of madness!'

6:31 He replied:

6:33 'Woe unto you!

6:34 By Allah, they can neither cause harm nor bring benefit.

6:38 Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, has indeed sent a Messenger

6:42 And revealed to you a Book through which He has rescued you from your former state.

6:47 I bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, having no partner,

6:52 And that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.

6:55 I have brought you from him that which he has commanded you to do and that which he has forbidden you.'

7:01 He [the narrator] said:

7:02 By Allah, evening had not fallen upon that very day

7:05 Before every single man and woman in his settlement had embraced Islam.

7:10 Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:

7:14 'We never heard of an emissary of any people who was more noble than Dimam ibn Tha'labah.'"

7:20 The Abridged Prophetic Biography (Seerah).

7:24 Though the longing of mortals for one another may endure,

7:31 The longing toward you knows no bound nor measure.

7:38 May Allah shower blessings upon you as long as the call to prayer is raised,

7:44 And as long as lips move in enduring remembrance.
