0:25 Appointing Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) as Leader of the Hajj.

0:34 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) appointed Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) as leader of the Hajj,

0:41 And that was in the ninth year of the Hijrah,

0:44 So that he might lead and establish the pilgrimage for the Muslims.

0:47 Meanwhile, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) remained in the Prophet's City (Madinah),

0:53 Overseeing the propagation of Islam and attending to the delegations arriving to declare their faith.

0:58 Thus, Abu Bakr al-Siddiq set out with three hundred men from Madinah,

1:04 And the Messenger of Allah sent twenty sacrificial camels along with him,

1:10 Having garlanded and marked them with his own noble hands,

1:13 Putting Najiyah ibn Jundub al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) in charge of them.

1:19 Abu Bakr also brought along five sacrificial camels of his own.

1:23 The two Shaykhs recorded in their Sahihs,

1:26 On the authority of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her), who said:

1:30 "I twisted the garlands for the sacrificial animals of the Messenger of Allah with my own hands;

1:35 Then the Messenger of Allah garlanded them with his own hands,

1:40 And then dispatched them with my father.

1:43 Yet nothing that Allah had made lawful became prohibited for the Prophet until the sacrificial animals were slaughtered."

1:52 Dispatching 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with Surah Bara'ah (al-Tawbah).

1:58 After Abu Bakr al-Siddiq had departed,

2:02 The opening verses of Surah al-Tawbah were revealed to the Prophet (peace be upon him).

2:09 Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah dispatched 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him)

2:15 To publicly proclaim its newly revealed rulings to the people.

2:19 Al-Hafiz said in al-Fath:

2:21 "The scholars stated:

2:22 The wisdom behind sending 'Ali after Abu Bakr

2:29 Lay in the established Arab custom that a covenant could only be dissolved by the person who concluded it,

2:34 Or by a closely related member of his own household.

2:38 Therefore, he addressed them in accordance with their customary norms."

2:42 Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir stated:

2:44 "The beginning of this noble surah—

2:47 Meaning Surah al-Tawbah—

2:49 Was revealed to the Messenger of Allah upon his return from the Battle of Tabuk,

2:55 When he had intended to perform Hajj.

2:57 But he then recalled that the polytheists would still attend the pilgrimage season that year as was their custom,

3:03 And that they would circumambulate the House completely naked,

3:06 So he disliked mingling with them,

3:09 And instead appointed Abu Bakr al-Siddiq as the leader of the Hajj that year,

3:15 So that he might lead the people in performing their rites."

3:18 Imam al-Tirmidhi in his Jami' and al-Hakim in his Mustadrak narrated with an authentic chain,

3:24 On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

3:28 "The Messenger of Allah dispatched Abu Bakr

3:34 And commanded him to proclaim these declarations publicly;

3:38 Then he sent 'Ali to follow him.

3:41 While Abu Bakr was en route,

3:46 He suddenly heard the grunting of the camel of the Messenger of Allah.

3:51 Abu Bakr came out alarmed,

3:54 Thinking it might be the Prophet himself,

3:57 But found that it was 'Ali.

4:00 'Ali then handed him the letter of the Prophet,

4:05 In which he confirmed him as leader of the pilgrimage season—

4:07 That is, confirming Abu Bakr's leadership over the Hajj—

4:12 And instructed that 'Ali should publicly proclaim these declarations."

4:16 So 'Ali stood up during the days of Tashriq

4:21 And proclaimed: "Allah and His Messenger are disassociated from the polytheists;

4:26 “Travel freely in the land four months, and know that ye cannot escape Allah and that Allah will confound the disbelievers (in His Guidance).” (9:2)

4:30 No polytheist shall perform Hajj after this year,

4:33 No naked person shall circumambulate the House,

4:36 And none shall enter Paradise except a believer."

4:40 'Ali would repeatedly proclaim these declarations,

4:44 And whenever his voice grew hoarse, Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) would stand up and proclaim them in his stead.

4:50 The two Shaykhs recorded in their Sahihs,

4:52 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah, who said:

4:56 "Abu Bakr al-Siddiq dispatched me

4:59 During the Hajj over which the Messenger of Allah had appointed him as leader,

5:05 Prior to the Farewell Pilgrimage,

5:07 Among a group tasked with announcing to the people on the Day of Sacrifice:

5:11 'No polytheist shall perform Hajj after this year,

5:14 And no naked person shall circumambulate the House.'"

5:17 Al-Hafiz said in al-Fath:

5:20 "In conclusion, Abu Hurayrah's direct involvement in making this proclamation

5:25 Was carried out by order of Abu Bakr,

5:28 Whereby he would call out that which 'Ali conveyed to him

5:33 From among the matters he had been commanded to deliver."

5:36 Imam Ahmad narrated in his Musnad and al-Tirmidhi in his Jami' with an authentic chain,

5:42 On the authority of Zayd ibn Yuthay', who said:

5:44 "We asked 'Ali:

5:47 'With what instructions were you sent on that Hajj?'

5:50 He replied:

5:52 'I was sent with four instructions:

5:54 That no naked person shall circumambulate the House;

5:57 That whoever has a covenant with the Prophet,

6:02 It remains valid until its appointed term;

6:04 While whoever has no covenant,

6:06 Has a respite of four months;

6:09 That no soul shall enter Paradise except a believing soul;

6:13 And that the polytheists and Muslims shall never gather again after this year of theirs.'"

6:19 Abridged Prophetic Biography (Seerah).

6:23 Though the longing of mortals for one another may endure,

6:30 The depth of yearning for you knows no bounds.

6:37 May Allah send blessings upon you as long as the call to prayer is raised,

6:44 And as long as lips move in enduring remembrance.
