0:13 An Abridgment of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah),

0:17 Authored by Sheikh Musa ibn Rashid al-'Azimi,

0:23 May Allah preserve him.

0:25 The Expedition of al-Raji'.

0:33 This expedition took place in Safar,

0:36 In the fourth year of the Hijrah.

0:39 Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih,

0:42 On the authority of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

0:45 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) dispatched ten scouts,

0:51 Appointing 'Asim ibn Thabit al-Ansari as their commander,

0:55 The maternal grandfather of 'Asim ibn 'Umar ibn al-Khattab.

0:58 When they reached al-Hadah, between 'Usfan and Makkah,

1:02 Their presence was mentioned to a clan of Hudhayl,

1:05 Called Banu Lihyan.

1:08 So they mobilized nearly one hundred archers against them,

1:12 Who tracked their footprints,

1:14 Until they found date stones they had eaten at an encampment where they had rested,

1:19 And said, "These are the dates of Yathrib."

1:21 So they followed their trail.

1:24 When 'Asim and his companions noticed them,

1:27 They took refuge on high ground,

1:29 And the enemy surrounded them,

1:31 Saying to them,

1:33 "Come down and surrender,

1:36 And you have our solemn covenant and pledge that we will not kill any of you."

1:41 Thereupon 'Asim ibn Thabit (may Allah be pleased with him) said,

1:44 "O people!

1:46 As for me,

1:47 I will never descend under the protection of a disbeliever."

1:50 Then he supplicated,

1:51 "O Allah, inform Your Prophet (peace be upon him) about us."

1:56 So they shot them with arrows,

1:58 And killed 'Asim.

2:00 Then three men went down to them, accepting their covenant and pledge,

2:05 Among whom were Khubayb,

2:06 Zayd ibn al-Dathinah,

2:08 And another man.

2:10 It is stated in the narration of Ibn Ishaq in the Seerah

2:13 That he was 'Abdullah ibn Tariq al-Balawi (may Allah be pleased with him).

2:18 When they overpowered them,

2:21 They untied the strings of their bows

2:23 And bound them with them.

2:25 The third man—

2:27 Namely 'Abdullah ibn Tariq—said,

2:29 "This is the first act of treachery!

2:32 By Allah, I will not accompany you.

2:34 Indeed, I have an example in these fallen companions,"

2:36 Meaning those who were slain.

2:38 So they dragged him and struggled with him,

2:41 But he refused to accompany them.

2:43 So they set off with Khubayb and Zayd ibn al-Dathinah,

2:46 Until they sold them [in Makkah] after the Battle of Badr.

2:50 The sons of al-Harith ibn 'Amir ibn Nawfal bought Khubayb,

2:55 For it was Khubayb who had killed al-Harith ibn 'Amir on the day of Badr.

3:00 So Khubayb remained imprisoned among them,

3:02 Until they resolved to kill him.

3:05 He then borrowed a razor from one of al-Harith's daughters to shave his pubic hair,

3:10 And a little boy of hers toddled over to him while she was inattentive,

3:13 Until he reached him.

3:14 She then found him seating the boy on his thigh with the razor in his hand.

3:19 She said,

3:20 "I was terrified with a fright that Khubayb noticed,

3:24 So he said,

3:25 'Do you fear that I might kill him?

3:27 I would never do that.'"

3:30 She said,

3:31 "By Allah, I never saw a captive better than Khubayb!

3:36 By Allah, I found him one day eating from a bunch of grapes in his hand,

3:41 Even though he was bound in iron chains,

3:44 And there was no fruit to be found in Makkah."

3:47 And she used to say,

3:49 "It was nothing but provision that Allah had granted Khubayb."

3:53 When they took him outside the sacred precinct to kill him in the profane territory,

3:57 Khubayb said to them,

3:59 "Allow me to pray two rak'ahs."

4:02 So they let him, and he prayed two rak'ahs,

4:05 And then said,

4:06 "By Allah, were it not that you might think I was anxious [about death], I would have prayed longer."

4:12 Then he said,

4:13 "O Allah, count their numbers,

4:16 Slay them one by one,

4:18 And do not spare a single one of them!"

4:21 Then he began to recite:

4:23 "I care not, when I am killed as a Muslim,

4:27 Upon which side my death for Allah shall be;

4:31 For that is for the sake of the Divine, and if He wills,

4:35 He will bless the severed joints of a dismembered body."

4:40 Then Abu Sirwa'ah,

4:42 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith, stepped forward to him

4:44 And killed him.

4:45 Ibn Ishaq narrated in the Seerah with an authentic chain of transmission

4:49 On the authority of 'Uqbah ibn al-Harith, who said,

4:51 "By Allah, I did not kill Khubayb,

4:55 For I was too young for that;

4:57 Rather, Abu Maysarah, a brother of Banu 'Abd al-Dar,

5:01 Took the spear and placed it in my hand,

5:05 Then grabbed my hand along with the spear,

5:07 And thrust it into him until he killed him."

5:11 Thus, Khubayb was the one who instituted for every Muslim executed in captivity

5:15 The performance of prayer.

5:17 Some people from Quraysh sent messengers to the body of 'Asim ibn Thabit,

5:21 When they were informed that he had been killed,

5:23 To bring back a recognizable part of his body,

5:26 For he had killed one of their prominent leaders.

5:31 Al-Hafiz [Ibn Hajar] said in al-Fath:

5:33 Perhaps that mentioned leader was

5:35 'Uqbah ibn Abi Mu'ayt,

5:37 For 'Asim had executed him in captivity by command of the Prophet (peace be upon him)

5:43 After they departed from Badr.

5:46 But Allah sent over 'Asim what resembled a canopy of wasps—

5:50 That is, a cloud of hornets

5:53 Or bees—

5:54 Which protected him from their emissaries,

5:56 So they were unable to cut off any part of him.

6:00 Ibn Ishaq added:

6:02 When the hornets stood as an obstacle between them and his body,

6:06 They said, "Leave him until evening,

6:09 When they will depart from him, and then we will take him."

6:12 But Allah sent a torrent down the valley,

6:15 Which carried 'Asim away and bore him off.

6:20 An Abridgment of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah).

6:23 Though the longing of people for one another may last long,

6:30 The longing for you transcends all bounds.

6:37 May Allah send blessings upon you whenever the call to prayer is raised,

6:44 And lips move with enduring praise.
