0:25 The Mutiny of 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy and His Companions.

0:33 Before daybreak on Saturday,

0:35 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out in the last part of the night.

0:39 When he reached ash-Shawt,

0:41 he led the Fajr prayer,

0:43 being very close to the enemy.

0:46 It was there that 'Abdullah ibn Ubayy ibn Salul withdrew

0:49 with roughly a third of the army,

0:51 consisting of three hundred men,

0:55 "O people, we do not see why we should get ourselves killed here!"

1:00 So he returned with those of his people who followed him, the hypocrites and doubters.

1:04 'Abdullah ibn 'Amr ibn Haram, may Allah be pleased with him, pursued them,

1:09 and said to them:

1:11 "O my people,

1:12 I remind you of Allah!

1:14 Do not abandon your people and your Prophet when their enemy has arrived."

1:19 They replied:

1:21 "If we knew that you were going to fight, we would not have surrendered you,

1:25 but we do not believe there will be any fighting."

1:29 When they defied him

1:31 and insisted upon leaving them,

1:34 he, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

1:36 "May Allah banish you, O enemies of Allah!

1:39 Allah will surely make His Prophet, peace be upon him, independent of you."

1:45 And concerning these hypocrites, Allah revealed His saying:

1:50 “That which befell you, on the day when the two armies met, was by permission of Allah; that He might know the true believers;” (3:166)

1:58 “And that He might know the hypocrites, unto whom it was said: Come, fight in the way of Allah, or defend yourselves. They answered: If we knew aught of fighting we would follow you. On that day they were nearer disbelief than faith. They utter with their mouths a thing which is not in their hearts. Allah is Best Aware of what they hide.” (3:167)

2:07 “And that He might know the hypocrites, unto whom it was said: Come, fight in the way of Allah, or defend yourselves. They answered: If we knew aught of fighting we would follow you. 2:26 And concerning them, His saying was revealed:

2:29 “What aileth you that ye are become two parties regarding the hypocrites, when Allah cast them back (to disbelief) because of what they earned? Seek ye to guide him whom Allah hath sent astray? He whom Allah sendeth astray, for him thou (O MUhammad) canst not find a road.” (4:88)

2:36 The two Sheikhs reported in their Sahihs

2:39 on the authority of Zayd ibn Thabit, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

2:43 "When the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out for the Battle of Uhud,

2:48 some of those who had gone out with him turned back.

2:51 The Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, were split into two groups regarding them:

2:56 one group said, 'We should fight them,'

2:59 while the other said, 'We should not fight them.'

3:03 Thereupon, it was revealed:

3:05 “What aileth you that ye are become two parties regarding the hypocrites, when Allah cast them back (to disbelief) because of what they earned? Seek ye to guide him whom Allah hath sent astray? He whom Allah sendeth astray, for him thou (O MUhammad) canst not find a road.” (4:88)

3:12 Al-Hafiz said in al-Fath: "This is the sound explanation for the occasion of its revelation."

3:17 The Swaying of Banu Salimah and Banu Harithah by the Hypocrites.

3:23 Banu Salimah and Banu Harithah were swayed by the words of Ibn Salul,

3:28 and both clans contemplated turning back,

3:30 but Allah protected them from doing so and kept them firm.

3:35 Allah Almighty said:

3:37 “When two parties of you almost fell away, and Allah was their Protecting Friend. In Allah let believers put their trust.” (3:122)

3:43 "and Allah was their protector,

3:45 and upon Allah let the believers rely."

3:49 Imam al-Qurtubi said:

3:51 "The two groups were

3:53 Banu Salimah of al-Khazraj

3:55 and Banu Harithah of al-Aws,

3:58 and they formed the two flanks of the army on the day of Uhud."

4:02 The two Sheikhs reported in their Sahihs

4:05 on the authority of Jabir ibn 'Abdullah, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said:

4:09 "Concerning us was revealed:

4:11 “When two parties of you almost fell away, and Allah was their Protecting Friend. In Allah let believers put their trust.” (3:122)

4:16 'and Allah was their protector.'

4:18 We are the two groups:

4:20 Banu Harithah and Banu Salimah,

4:23 and we would not have liked it had it not been revealed,

4:26 — and Sufyan once said: 'it would not have pleased me' —

4:30 on account of Allah's words: 'and Allah was their protector.'"

4:36 The Messenger's Resumption, peace be upon him,

4:40 of his march toward Uhud.

4:42 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, advanced

4:47 after the hypocrites turned back, with the remainder of the army,

4:51 who numbered seven hundred fighters.

4:54 Opinions differ

4:55 as to whether they had any cavalry with them or not.

4:59 He continued until he reached the mountain pass of Uhud,

5:02 encamping at the edge of the valley toward the mountain.

5:05 He deployed his army facing Madinah,

5:08 keeping the mountain of Uhud to his back,

5:12 and placing the Mount of 'Aynayn on his left.

5:15 In this manner,

5:17 the enemy army became positioned between the Muslims and Madinah.

5:24 The Prophet's Deployment of His Army

5:29 and His Instructions to the Archers.

5:32 On the morning of Saturday,

5:35 the fifteenth of Shawwal,

5:37 the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, arrayed his Companions for battle.

5:43 He selected the most skilled archers from among them,

5:46 fifty archers in number,

5:48 and placed 'Abdullah ibn Jubayr ibn an-Nu'man

5:52 al-Ansari al-Awsi, the veteran of Badr, may Allah be pleased with him, in command over them.

5:56 He ordered them to take their position on a small hill

6:00 known later as the Mount of the Archers.

6:03 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, gave them

6:07 clear and unambiguous orders,

6:10 saying: "Protect our backs.

6:13 If you see us being killed, do not come to our aid,

6:17 and if you see that we have taken spoils,

6:20 do not join us."

6:22 Imam al-Bukhari and Abu Dawud reported

6:25 on the authority of al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said:

6:29 "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, appointed over the archers on the day of Uhud

6:35 — and they were fifty men —

6:37 'Abdullah ibn Jubayr,

6:39 and said:

6:40 'If you see birds snatching us,

6:43 do not leave this position of yours until I send for you;

6:48 and if you see that we have defeated the enemy and routed them,

6:52 do not leave until I send for you.'"

6:56 In another narration in Sahih al-Bukhari,

6:59 on the authority of al-Bara' ibn 'Azib, may Allah be pleased with them both, he said:

7:03 "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

7:07 'Do not leave your post.

7:09 If you see us victorious over them, do not leave your post;

7:13 and if you see them prevailing over us, do not come to our aid.'"

7:17 By positioning this detachment upon the mountain,

7:21 accompanied by these strict military orders,

7:24 the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, sealed the only gap

7:29 through which the polytheist cavalry

7:32 could infiltrate behind the Muslim ranks

7:36 to execute an outflanking maneuver and encircle them.

7:41 An Abridgment of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah).

7:46 Though the longing mortals feel for one another may endure,

7:52 the longing directed toward you knows no bounds.

7:59 May Allah send blessings upon you as long as the call to prayer is raised,

8:06 and lips move with words that remain.
