1:14 On the authority of Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

1:17 "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood before me

1:22 While lice were dropping from my head,

1:25 And he said,

1:26 'Are your vermin troubling you?'

1:28 I said, 'Yes.'

1:30 So he said,

1:31 'Then shave your head,'

1:33 Or he said,

1:34 'Shave it.'

1:35 Ka'b said,

1:36 'It was concerning me that this verse was revealed,'

1:39 “Perform the pilgrimage and the visit (to Makka) for Allah. And if ye are prevented, then send such gifts as can be obtained with ease, and shave not your heads until the gifts have reached their destination. And whoever among you is sick or hath an ailment of the head must pay a ransom of fasting or almsgiving or offering. 1:44 To the end of the verse.

1:46 The Prophet (peace be upon him) then said:

1:49 'Fast for three days,

1:51 Or give in charity a Faraq [of food] distributed among six people,

1:54 Or sacrifice whatever offering is easily attainable.'

1:57 In another narration in the two Sahihs,

2:00 Ka'b ibn 'Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

2:03 'I was brought to the Prophet (peace be upon him)

2:06 While lice were scattering across my face,

2:09 So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:

2:13 "I did not think that your suffering had reached such an extent.

2:17 Can you find a sheep [to sacrifice]?"

2:19 I said, "No."

2:20 So the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

2:24 "Fast for three days,

2:26 Or feed six poor people,

2:29 Giving each poor person half a Sa' of food,

2:32 And shave your head."'

2:34 Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said:

2:36 "The position of the four Imams

2:38 And the majority of scholars

2:40 Is that he is given a choice in this situation:

2:43 If he wishes, he may fast;

2:45 If he wishes, he may give a Faraq in charity,

2:48 Which is equivalent to three Sa's,

2:50 Giving half a Sa' to each poor person,

2:52 Which equals two Mudds;

2:54 And if he wishes, he may slaughter a sheep and give it in charity to the poor.

2:59 Whichever of these he performs will suffice him."

3:02 Being Prevented [from Completing] the 'Umrah of al-Hudaybiyyah

3:09 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

3:14 And his noble Companions were unable to perform the 'Umrah

3:17 Because the Quraysh prevented them,

3:20 Which is known in fiqh as being prevented (Ihsar) during 'Umrah.

3:23 Imam Muslim recorded in his Sahih

3:26 On the authority of al-Bara' ibn 'Azib (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:

3:30 "When the Prophet (peace be upon him) was prevented from reaching the Sacred House,

3:35 The people of Mecca concluded a treaty with him allowing him to enter it

3:39 In the following year,

3:41 And remain therein for three days."

3:43 Imam al-Bukhari recorded in his Sahih

3:46 On the authority of Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), who said:

3:50 "The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was indeed prevented,

3:54 So he shaved his head, was intimate with his wives,

3:57 And slaughtered his sacrificial animal,

3:59 Until he performed 'Umrah the following year."

4:02 Concerning this, the words of Allah the Exalted were revealed:

4:53 "...and seven when you return [home];

4:56 Those are ten complete [days]..."

5:06 "And fear Allah, and know that Allah is severe in penalty."

5:14 Imam al-Suhayli said, speaking about the Compensatory 'Umrah (Umrat al-Qada'),

5:19 Which took place a year after the 'Umrah of al-Hudaybiyyah:

5:23 "It was named the Compensatory 'Umrah

5:26 Because the Prophet (peace be upon him) settled the treaty with Quraysh upon it,

5:31 Not because he was making up an 'Umrah that had been spoiled when he was barred from the House,

5:36 For it had not been invalidated by their turning him away from the House;

5:39 Rather, it was a complete, accepted 'Umrah.

5:43 Thus, it is counted among the Prophet's 'Umrahs (peace be upon him),

5:48 Which were four: the 'Umrah of al-Hudaybiyyah, the Compensatory 'Umrah,

5:53 The 'Umrah from al-Ji'ranah,

5:55 And the 'Umrah he combined with his Hajj during the Farewell Pilgrimage."

6:03 The Muslims' Grief over This Treaty

6:07 Al-Miswar ibn Makhramah and Marwan ibn al-Hakam said:

6:11 "The Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had set out

6:16 Having no doubt whatsoever of victory and entry [into Mecca],

6:18 Due to a vision the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had seen.

6:23 But when they witnessed the treaty, the obligation to return,

6:26 And what the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) had conceded on his own part,

6:31 The people were overcome by tremendous distress,

6:34 To the point that they were nearly ruined [with grief]."

6:40 On the authority of Sahl ibn Hunayf (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:

6:44 "'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

6:50 And said, 'O Messenger of Allah!

6:53 Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood?'

6:56 He replied, 'Yes, indeed.'

6:58 'Umar said, 'Are not our slain in Paradise

7:01 And their slain in the Fire?'

7:03 He replied, 'Yes, indeed.'

7:05 'Umar said, 'Then why should we accept humiliation in our religion

7:09 And turn back before Allah has judged between us and them?'

7:13 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

7:18 'O Ibn al-Khattab!

7:20 I am truly the Messenger of Allah,

7:22 And Allah will never forsake me.'

7:25 Thereupon, 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) departed,

7:28 Unable to contain his simmering anger,

7:30 And came to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).

7:33 He said, 'O Abu Bakr!

7:36 Are we not upon the truth and they upon falsehood?'

7:39 He replied, 'Yes, indeed.'

7:41 'Umar said, 'Are not our slain in Paradise and their slain in the Fire?'

7:46 He replied, 'Yes, indeed.'

7:48 'Umar said, 'Then why should we accept humiliation in our religion,

7:52 Turning back before Allah has judged between us and them?'

7:56 Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

7:58 'O Ibn al-Khattab!

8:00 He is truly the Messenger of Allah,

8:02 And Allah will never forsake him.'

8:05 In another narration in Sahih al-Bukhari,

8:08 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:

8:11 'Did you not tell us

8:13 That we would go to the House and circumambulate it?'

8:16 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

8:20 'Yes,

8:21 But did I tell you that we would go to it this year?'

8:24 'Umar said, 'I said, "No."'

8:26 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said:

8:30 'You will certainly go to it and circumambulate it.'

8:34 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) later said:

8:36 'I continued to fast, give charity,

8:39 Pray, and free slaves to atone for what I had done,

8:43 Out of dread for the words I had spoken that day,

8:47 Until I hoped that it would turn out well for me.'

8:50 Imam al-Nawawi said:

8:52 'The scholars said:

8:54 'Umar's questioning (may Allah be pleased with him)

8:57 And his spoken words were not out of doubt,

9:00 But rather seeking clarification of what was hidden from him,

9:03 And an eager desire to humble the disbelievers and manifest the supremacy of Islam,

9:07 As was well known of his character (may Allah be pleased with him),

9:10 His strength in championing the religion,

9:13 And his zeal in abasing the proponents of falsehood.'"

9:20 Though the longing of creation for one another may endure,

9:26 The longing for you transcends all bounds.

9:33 May Allah shower blessings upon you whenever the call to prayer is raised,

9:40 And whenever lips move in reciting the enduring words.
