0:39 “And what aileth you that ye spend not in the way of Allah when unto Allah belongeth the inheritance of the heavens and the earth? Those who spent and fought before the victory are not upon a level (with the rest of you). Such are greater in rank than those who spent and fought afterwards. Unto each hath Allah promised good. And Allah is Informed of what ye do.” (57:10)

1:21 "The conquest intended here is unanimously the Conquest of Mecca."

1:29 The Date of the Supreme Conquest:

1:33 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, set out on the expedition against Mecca in Ramadan,

1:38 in the eighth year of the Hijrah, without any disagreement among scholars.

1:42 For the two Shaykhs [al-Bukhari and Muslim] narrated in their Sahihs,

1:44 and the wording is that of al-Bukhari,

1:46 from Ibn 'Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said:

1:50 "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

1:53 went on the campaign of the Conquest in Ramadan."

1:57 Al-Hafiz said in *Fath al-Bari*:

1:59 "What the scholars of the Seerah have unanimously agreed upon

2:02 is that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:05 set out on the tenth of Ramadan,

2:08 and entered Mecca when nineteen nights of it had passed."

2:15 The Cause of the Supreme Conquest:

2:19 Quraysh and Banu Bakr breached one of the terms of the Treaty of al-Hudaybiyyah.

2:24 Ibn Hibban narrated in his Sahih with a sound chain

2:29 from Ibn 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with them both, who said:

2:32 "Khuza'ah were allies of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:38 while Banu Bakr, a clan of Banu Kinanah,

2:42 were allies of Abu Sufyan.

2:45 He said: There was a truce between them during the days of al-Hudaybiyyah,

2:50 but Banu Bakr raided Khuza'ah during that period.

2:55 So they sent word to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, asking him for help,

3:00 whereupon the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, set out

3:03 to reinforce them in the month of Ramadan."

3:07 Ibn Ishaq narrated in the Seerah, and al-Bayhaqi in *Dala'il al-Nubuwwah* with a sound chain,

3:14 from Marwan ibn al-Hakam and al-Miswar ibn Makhramah, who said:

3:18 "Among the terms of the treaty of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, on the day of al-Hudaybiyyah between him and Quraysh,

3:26 was that whoever wished to enter into the covenant and pact of Muhammad could do so,

3:31 and whoever wished to enter into the covenant and pact of Quraysh could do so.

3:36 Thereupon, Khuza'ah leapt up and said, 'We enter into the covenant and pact of Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.'

3:44 And Banu Bakr leapt up and said, 'We enter into the covenant and pact of Quraysh.'

3:51 They remained under that truce for about seventeen or eighteen months.

3:57 Then Banu Bakr, who had entered into the covenant and pact of Quraysh,

4:03 attacked Khuza'ah, who had entered into the covenant and pact of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:11 by night at a watering place of theirs called al-Watir, near Mecca.

4:17 Quraysh said, 'Muhammad will not know about us; it is nighttime and no one can see us.'

4:25 So they aided them against them with cavalry and weapons—

4:29 and *al-kura'* refers to all horses—

4:32 and they fought them alongside Banu Bakr out of malice toward the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him."

4:41 The News Reaches the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him:

4:48 When Banu Bakr and Quraysh joined together against Khuza'ah and inflicted upon them what they did,

4:55 and breached the treaty and covenant that stood between them and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

5:02 by transgressing against Khuza'ah while they were under his alliance and pact,

5:07 'Amr ibn Salim al-Khuza'i set out until he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Medina—

5:15 and that was among the events that provoked the Conquest of Mecca.

5:19 He stood before him while he was seated in the mosque among the people

5:24 and said: "O Lord! I implore Muhammad by the ancient alliance of our fathers and his!

5:33 You were once children and we were like fathers, then we embraced Islam and never withdrew our hand.

5:40 So grant aid, may Allah guide you, with an inescapable victory, and call upon the servants of Allah to come as reinforcements!

5:47 Among them is the Messenger of Allah, who has divested himself of all hesitation;

5:51 if he is subjected to indignity, his face clouds with wrath,

5:54 at the head of a surging army that rolls like a foaming sea!

5:58 Truly, Quraysh have broken the promise made to you,

6:02 and have violated your binding covenant!

6:05 They have set an ambush for me at Kada',

6:09 and claimed that I would not call upon anyone for help,

6:12 though they are more abject and fewer in number!

6:15 They attacked us by night at al-Watir while we were asleep,

6:19 and killed us while bowing and prostrating!"

6:23 Thereupon, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

6:27 "You have been granted victory, O 'Amr ibn Salim!"

6:30 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent word to Quraysh

6:35 demanding that they disassociate themselves from Banu Bakr,

6:37 or pay the blood money for the slain of Khuza'ah,

6:40 or else he would declare war upon them.

6:42 Musaddad narrated in his Musnad with an authentic mursal chain

6:47 from Muhammad ibn 'Abbad ibn Ja'far, who said:

6:51 "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, sent word to Quraysh:

6:55 'To proceed:

6:57 Either you disassociate yourselves from the alliance with Banu Bakr,

7:01 or you pay the blood money for the slain of Khuza'ah;

7:03 otherwise, I declare war upon you.'

7:06 Then Qardhah ibn 'Abd 'Amr ibn Nawfal ibn 'Abd Manaf,

7:11 the brother-in-law of Mu'awiyah, said:

7:13 'Banu Bakr are an ill-omened folk!

7:16 We will not pay the blood money for those they killed,

7:18 for that would leave us with neither small nor great—

7:21 that is, it would leave us with neither little nor much.

7:25 Nor will we disassociate ourselves from their alliance,

7:27 for no one remains upon our religion besides them!

7:31 Rather, we declare war upon him!'"

7:37 The Preparation of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

7:41 for the Campaign of Mecca,

7:43 and His Concealment of the Matter:

7:46 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, began

7:49 making preparations for the campaign against Mecca, may Allah ennoble it,

7:53 and he asked Allah, Glorious and Exalted,

7:55 to conceal the news from Quraysh,

7:58 and his Lord, Glorious and Exalted, answered his prayer.

8:01 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, commanded

8:05 the people to prepare for war,

8:07 but he did not disclose to them his intended destination,

8:10 except to the senior Companions, may Allah be pleased with them.

8:14 And he sent word to the tribes to prepare to march with him,

8:18 so there gathered to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

8:21 ten thousand fighters, as will be mentioned.

8:28 The Letter of Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah, may Allah be pleased with him,

8:33 to the People of Mecca:

8:36 Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah, may Allah be pleased with him, wrote

8:39 a letter to the people of Mecca,

8:42 informing them therein of what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, intended

8:47 by way of marching to fight them.

8:50 For the two Shaykhs narrated in their Sahihs

8:53 from 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

8:57 "The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, dispatched me,

9:01 along with al-Zubayr and al-Miqdad,

9:04 and said:

9:05 'Proceed until you reach Rawdat Khakh,

9:09 for there is a woman traveling in a litter who carries a letter;

9:12 take it from her.'

9:14 He said:

9:16 So we rode off, our horses galloping at full speed, until we reached the meadow,

9:21 and there we found the woman in the litter.

9:23 We said to her,

9:25 'Produce the letter!'

9:27 She replied,

9:28 'I have no letter with me.'

9:30 So we said,

9:31 'You will either bring forth the letter,

9:33 or we will strip off your garments!'

9:36 He said:

9:37 Thereupon, she brought it out from her braids—

9:40 that is, from the plaits of her hair.

9:43 We then brought it to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

9:47 and behold, it read:

9:49 'From Hatib ibn Abi Balta'ah to certain people among the polytheists of Mecca,'

9:54 informing them of some of the plans of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

9:59 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

10:03 'O Hatib, what is this?'

10:06 He, may Allah be pleased with him, replied:

10:08 'O Messenger of Allah, do not be hasty with me!

10:11 I was merely attached to Quraysh'—

10:14 meaning:

10:16 'I was an ally and not from among their own kin;

10:20 and the Emigrants who are with you have kinfolk in Mecca who protect their families and properties.

10:27 Since I lacked such lineage among them, I wished

10:31 to do them a favor so they might protect my relatives,

10:35 and I did not do it out of apostasy from my religion, nor out of choosing disbelief over Islam.'

10:40 The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

10:44 'As for him, he has told you the truth.'

10:47 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said:

10:50 'O Messenger of Allah, let me strike the neck of this hypocrite!'

10:55 But the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

10:59 'He indeed attended Badr!

11:01 And what would make you know?

11:03 Perhaps Allah looked upon the people of Badr

11:06 and said:

11:08 "Do whatever you wish, for I have forgiven you."'

11:12 Thereupon Allah, Glorious and Exalted, revealed:

11:14 “O ye who believe! Choose not My enemy and your enemy for allies. Do ye give them friendship when they disbelieve in that truth which hath come unto you, driving out the messenger and you because ye believe in Allah, your Lord? If ye have come forth to strive in My way and seeking My good pleasure, (show them not friendship). Do ye show friendship unto them in secret, when I am Best Aware of what ye hide and what ye proclaim? And whosoever doeth it among you, he verily hath strayed from the right way.” (60:1)

11:21 'You extend to them affection while they have disbelieved in what came to you of the truth...'

11:32 up to His words:

11:34 '...has certainly strayed from the right path.'

11:37 Al-Hafiz Ibn Kathir said:

11:40 'Thus Allah revealed that to His Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

11:45 in response to his supplication.'"

11:53 Though all creation's yearning for each other may span wide,

11:59 the longing felt for you outstrips all bounds and measure.

12:07 May Allah shower blessings upon you as long as the call to prayer is raised,

12:13 and as long as the enduring words of praise

12:19 stir upon human lips.
