0:24 Mention of the Virtues of Abu Bakr, the Ansar, and Usamah

0:34 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned in his sermon the virtue of Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, Usamah ibn Zayd, and his father (may Allah be pleased with them),

0:46 As well as the virtue of the Ansar (may Allah be pleased with them).

0:49 The two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) narrated in their *Sahih*s from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said:

0:56 The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) sat upon the pulpit

1:01 And said, "Allah has given a servant the choice between granting him whatever he wishes from the splendor of this world, and that which is with Him; and he chose that which is with Him."

1:12 Upon hearing this, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) wept

1:15 And said, "May our fathers and mothers be ransomed for you!" We were astonished at his reaction,

1:22 And the people said, "Look at this old man: the Messenger of Allah is informing us of a servant whom Allah gave a choice

1:31 Between granting him the splendor of this world and that which is with Him,

1:35 Yet he says, 'May our fathers and mothers be ransomed for you!'"

1:40 But it was the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) who was the servant given the choice,

1:45 And Abu Bakr was the most knowledgeable among us regarding him.

1:48 Then the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "Indeed, the person who has favored me most in his companionship and his wealth is Abu Bakr.

1:58 Were I to take an intimate friend (khalil) from my Ummah, I would have taken Abu Bakr,

2:04 But the brotherhood of Islam suffices. Let no private doorway (*khawkhah*) remain open into the mosque except the doorway of Abu Bakr."

2:11 Imam al-Bukhari narrated in his *Sahih* from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said:

2:18 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out during his fatal illness with a cloth wrapped around his head,

2:26 And he sat upon the pulpit, praised Allah, and extolled Him.

2:31 Then he said, "Indeed, there is no one among the people who has favored me more with his life and his wealth than Abu Bakr ibn Abi Quhafah.

2:40 Were I to take an intimate friend from mankind, I would have taken Abu Bakr as an intimate friend,

2:47 But the bond of Islam is superior.

2:50 Close every private doorway leading into this mosque except the doorway of Abu Bakr."

2:56 Imam al-Bukhari also narrated in his *Sahih* from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said:

3:03 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) came out during his fatal illness

3:09 Draped in a mantle, with an oily dark cloth wrapped around his head—

3:13 Meaning his head was bound with a black cloth—until he sat upon the pulpit.

3:19 He praised Allah and extolled Him, then said, "To proceed:

3:24 Indeed, the people will increase while the Ansar will decrease, until they become among mankind like salt in food.

3:33 So whoever among you is appointed to an authority whereby he can harm some people or benefit others,

3:39 Let him accept from their good-doers and overlook their wrongdoers."

3:43 That was the last gathering in which the Prophet (peace be upon him) sat.

3:49 Imam Ahmad narrated in his *Musnad* with an authentic chain of transmission

3:53 From a man among the Companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him):

3:58 The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood as a speaker that day,

4:03 Praised Allah and extolled Him,

4:06 And sought forgiveness for the martyrs who were slain on the day of Uhud.

4:10 Then he said, "O gathering of the Emigrants (Muhajirun), you will increase in number,

4:15 Whereas the Ansar will not increase.

4:18 The Ansar are indeed my innermost repository and sanctuary—

4:22 Meaning my close confidants and inner circle.

4:25 So honor the noble among them and overlook their wrongdoers,

4:29 For they have fulfilled their obligation, and there only remains that which is owed to them."

4:34 Ibn Ishaq said:

4:36 Muhammad ibn Ja'far ibn al-Zubayr narrated to me

4:39 From 'Urwah ibn al-Zubayr and other scholars

4:43 That the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

4:46 Noticed that the people were hesitating regarding the expedition of Usamah ibn Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him),

4:50 While he was in severe pain.

4:52 So he went out with a cloth bound around his head until he sat upon the pulpit.

4:56 The people had been criticizing Usamah's leadership, saying,

5:00 "He has appointed a young youth over the prominent Emigrants and Ansar!"

5:05 He praised Allah and extolled Him as He deserves,

5:10 Then said, "O people!

5:13 Dispatch the expedition of Usamah!

5:16 By my life, if you criticize his leadership,

5:19 You have indeed criticized the leadership of his father before him.

5:22 Yet he is truly worthy of leadership,

5:25 Just as his father was worthy of it."

5:28 The two Shaykhs narrated in their *Sahih*s,

5:31 As well as Imam Ahmad in his *Musnad*,

5:34 With the wording being Ahmad's,

5:36 From Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said:

5:39 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) stood up

5:42 Among the people and said,

5:44 "Behold! You are finding fault with Usamah

5:47 And criticizing his leadership,

5:49 Just as you did with his father before.

5:52 Yet he was truly worthy of leadership,

5:56 And he was among the most beloved of all people to me,

5:59 And this son of his after him

6:02 Is among the most beloved of people to me.

6:04 So treat him well,

6:06 For he is among the best of you."

6:12 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) Leading the People in Prayer

6:17 The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) never ceased

6:21 Being eager to lead the people in prayer,

6:24 Despite the intense pain he was experiencing,

6:27 Until the illness overcame him and rendered him unable to go out.

6:31 At that point, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) ordered

6:35 Abu Bakr al-Siddiq to lead the people in prayer.

6:40 The two Shaykhs narrated in their *Sahih*s

6:43 From 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdillah ibn 'Utbah,

6:46 Who said: I entered upon 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her)

6:50 And asked, "Will you not tell me about the illness of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)?"

6:57 She (may Allah be pleased with her) replied,

6:59 "Certainly.

7:00 The Prophet (peace be upon him) grew heavy with illness,

7:04 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?'

7:07 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you.'

7:10 He said, 'Put water in the basin for me.'

7:14 She said: We did so,

7:16 And he bathed, then attempted to stand up with effort,

7:19 Meaning to rise with exertion,

7:21 But he fainted.

7:23 Then he regained consciousness

7:25 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?'

7:28 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.'

7:33 He said, 'Put water in the basin for me.'

7:37 She said: He sat and bathed,

7:40 Then attempted to stand up,

7:42 But he fainted again.

7:44 Then he regained consciousness

7:46 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?'

7:49 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.'

7:54 He said,

7:56 'Put water in the basin for me.'

7:58 So he sat and bathed,

8:00 Then attempted to stand up,

8:02 But he fainted.

8:04 Then he regained consciousness

8:05 And asked, 'Have the people prayed?'

8:08 We said, 'No, they are waiting for you, O Messenger of Allah.'

8:12 The people were remaining in the mosque,

8:14 Waiting for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)

8:17 For the late night ('Isha') prayer.

8:20 So the Prophet (peace be upon him) sent word

8:23 To Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)

8:26 Instructing him to lead the people in prayer.

8:28 The messenger came to him—

8:30 Meaning Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him)—

8:32 And said,

8:34 'Indeed, the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)

8:37 Orders you to lead the people in prayer.'

8:40 Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him),

8:43 Who was a tender-hearted man, said,

8:47 'O 'Umar, lead the people in prayer!'

8:49 But 'Umar replied to him, 'You have the greater right to it.'

8:51 So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led the prayers during those days.

8:56 Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt some lightness in his condition,

9:01 So he came out supported between two men—one of them being al-'Abbas—for the Zuhr prayer.

9:07 The author noted in the margin: and the other was 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him).

9:13 Abu Bakr was leading the people in prayer,

9:17 And when Abu Bakr noticed him, he began to step back,

9:23 But the Prophet (peace be upon him) gestured to him not to step back,

9:28 And said to the two men, "Seat me beside him."

9:32 So they seated him beside Abu Bakr.

9:35 Abu Bakr continued praying standing, following the prayer of the Prophet (peace be upon him),

9:42 And the people followed the prayer of Abu Bakr,

9:45 While the Prophet (peace be upon him) was seated.

9:49 The Number of Prayers Led by Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)

9:58 Imam al-Bayhaqi said: What is indicated by the hadith of Umm al-Fadl bint al-Harith,

10:06 Then the hadith of 'Ubaydullah ibn 'Abdillah ibn 'Utbah

10:09 From 'A'ishah and Ibn 'Abbas,

10:12 And then the hadith of 'Abd al-'Aziz ibn Suhayb

10:15 From Anas ibn Malik,

10:17 Is that Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him)

10:19 Led the people in the 'Isha' prayer on the night of Friday,

10:24 Then led them in five prayers on Friday,

10:28 Then five prayers on Saturday,

10:31 Then five prayers on Sunday,

10:34 Then led them in the Fajr prayer on Monday,

10:37 And the Prophet (peace be upon him) passed away on that day.

10:42 In between those days, when he felt some lightness, he had come out for the Zuhr prayer—

10:49 Either on Saturday or on Sunday—

10:53 After Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had already begun the prayer with them.

10:57 So the Prophet began his prayer, and they aligned their prayer with his,

11:02 While he was seated and they were standing.

11:05 He also once prayed behind Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him),

11:10 According to the narration of Nu'aym ibn Abi Hind and those who followed him.

11:14 Thus, the total number of prayers Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) led

11:18 During the lifetime of the Prophet (peace be upon him),

11:21 Including the one he commenced before the Prophet came out,

11:24 Was seventeen prayers.

11:28 *An Abridgment of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah)*

11:32 Though long may be the yearning of creations for one another,

11:38 The yearning for you knows no bound.

11:44 May Allah bestow blessings upon you as long as the call to prayer is raised,

11:51 And lips move with enduring remembrance.
