0:13 An Abridgment of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah),

0:25 The Delegation of Banu Hanifah

0:31 The delegation of Banu Hanifah came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

0:37 Among them was Musaylimah ibn Habib al-Hanafi, the Arch-Liar.

0:41 The two Shaykhs recorded in their Sahih collections,

0:44 On the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, who said:

0:48 Musaylimah the Arch-Liar arrived during the lifetime of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

0:54 And began saying,

0:56 "If Muhammad gives me authority after him, I will follow him."

1:00 He arrived accompanied by a large crowd of his people.

1:04 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, walked toward him,

1:08 Accompanied by Thabit ibn Qays ibn Shammas, may Allah be pleased with him.

1:13 In the hand of the Prophet, peace be upon him, was a piece of a palm branch.

1:17 He stood before Musaylimah among his followers and said:

1:22 "If you were to ask me for even this piece of palm, I would never give it to you.

1:26 You shall never exceed what Allah has decreed for you.

1:29 And if you turn your back, Allah will surely destroy you.

1:32 Indeed, I believe you are the very person shown to me in my dream.

1:36 And this is Thabit; he will answer you on my behalf."

1:39 Then he turned away and left him.

1:41 Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, said:

1:45 "I later inquired about the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him:

1:49 'I believe you are the very person shown to me in my dream.'

1:53 So Abu Hurayrah, may Allah be pleased with him, informed me

1:56 That the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

2:00 'While I was asleep,

2:02 I saw two gold bracelets placed on my wrists,

2:05 Which troubled me greatly.

2:08 Then it was revealed to me in my sleep that I should blow upon them.

2:12 So I blew upon them, and they flew away.

2:14 I interpreted them as two impostors who would appear after me:

2:18 One of them is al-Ansi, and the other is Musaylimah.'"

2:22 Imam al-Nawawi said:

2:24 "Musaylimah the Arch-Liar, the enemy of Allah,

2:28 Gathered large crowds from Banu Hanifah and others,

2:32 From among the foolish and rabble of the Arabs.

2:35 He intended to fight the Companions, may Allah be pleased with them,

2:38 In the aftermath of the passing of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him.

2:42 So Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, dispatched the armies against him,

2:47 Under the command of Khalid ibn al-Walid, may Allah be pleased with him,

2:51 In the eleventh year of the Hijrah.

2:54 They fought him,

2:56 Overcame Musaylimah,

2:58 And killed him while he was an unbeliever."

3:00 An Important Note:

3:02 Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated in *al-Fath*:

3:04 "The context of this account differs from what Ibn Ishaq related,

3:09 Namely that he arrived with his tribe's delegation,

3:12 But they left him behind with their mounts to guard them,

3:16 And then mentioned him to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

3:20 And collected his share of the gifts,

3:22 And that the Prophet said to them: 'He is not the worst among you';

3:26 And that when Musaylimah later claimed partnership in prophethood with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

3:34 He used this very statement as an argument.

3:36 Yet this narrative, along with its anomaly (*shudhudh*), has a weak chain due to interruption (*inqita'*).

3:41 Moreover, Musaylimah's standing among his people was far greater than that;

3:45 For he was called 'the Rahman of al-Yamamah'

3:49 Because of his exalted status among them.

3:51 How can this weak report be reconciled

3:54 With what is stated in this authentic hadith:

3:57 That the Prophet, peace be upon him, met him and addressed him directly,

4:02 Stating explicitly to him in the presence of his people

4:05 That had he asked him for even a piece of a palm branch, he would never give it to him?"

4:15 There came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

4:18 In the Prophet's city of Madinah, the Christian delegation of Najran,

4:22 Consisting of sixty riders,

4:24 Among whom were fourteen of their most prominent nobles,

4:28 Including the 'Aqib and the Sayyid.

4:31 They engaged in debate with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

4:35 Concerning the matter of Jesus, peace be upon him,

4:37 And verses of Surah Al 'Imran were revealed concerning them in that regard.

4:42 Allah the Exalted said:

4:44 “This (which) We recite unto thee is a revelation and a wise reminder.” (3:58)

4:51 “Lo! the likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, then He said unto him: Be! and he is.” (3:59)

4:58 “Lo! the likeness of Jesus with Allah is as the likeness of Adam. He created him of dust, then He said unto him: Be! and he is.” (3:59)

5:07 “(This is) the truth from thy Lord (O Muhammad), so be not thou of those who waver.” (3:60)

5:14 "Then whoever disputes with you concerning him after the knowledge that has come to you,

5:23 Say: 'Come, let us call our sons and your sons, our women

5:37 And your women, ourselves and yourselves,

5:43 Then let us humbly invoke and lay the curse of Allah upon the liars.'"

5:53 So they feared the mutual imprecation (*mubahalah*) and declined it.

5:58 Imam al-Qurtubi said:

6:00 "This verse is among the signs of the prophethood of Muhammad, peace be upon him;

6:06 For he challenged them to the mutual imprecation, but they refused it,

6:10 Consenting instead to pay the jizyah after their leader, the 'Aqib, informed them

6:15 That had they engaged in mutual imprecation, the valley would have blazed with fire upon them;

6:19 For Muhammad is indeed a sent Messenger,

6:23 And you well know that he has brought you the decisive truth concerning Jesus."

6:27 So they abandoned the mutual imprecation and returned to their land.

6:32 Imam al-Bukhari recorded in his Sahih,

6:35 On the authority of Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, who said:

6:38 "The 'Aqib and the Sayyid, the leaders of Najran, came to the Prophet, peace be upon him,

6:44 Intending to engage in mutual imprecation with him.

6:47 But one of them said to his companion: 'Do not do it!

6:51 For by Allah, if he is indeed a prophet and we engage in mutual imprecation with him,

6:55 Neither we nor our descendants after us will ever prosper.'"

6:59 Imam Ahmad recorded in his *Musnad* with an authentic chain,

7:03 On the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, who said:

7:07 "Had those who sought to invoke against the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, gone forth,

7:12 They would have returned to find neither wealth nor family remaining."

7:16 So the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, accepted that from them,

7:21 And then concluded a peace treaty with them on the condition of paying the jizyah.

7:24 Abu Dawud recorded in his *Sunan* with a weak chain—

7:29 Yet supported by corroborating transmissions—

7:31 On the authority of Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with both of them, who said:

7:35 "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, made peace with the people of Najran for two thousand garments:

7:41 Half to be delivered in the month of Safar,

7:43 And half in the month of Rajab,

7:45 Handing them over to the Muslims;

7:48 Along with the loan of thirty coats of mail,

7:51 Thirty horses,

7:53 Thirty camels,

7:55 And thirty of every type of weapon

7:59 With which to fight in battles;

8:01 And the Muslims would guarantee their return to them,

8:06 In the event of any treachery or betrayal in Yemen;

8:09 On the condition that none of their churches be demolished,

8:12 None of their priests be expelled,

8:14 Nor that they be coerced away from their faith,

8:16 So long as they do not commit a transgression or consume usury."

8:22 The Prophet's Dispatch of Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him, with Them:

8:29 When they prepared to return to their homeland,

8:32 They said to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him:

8:35 "We will grant you what you have asked of us;

8:38 But send with us a trustworthy man,

8:41 And do not send anyone with us except someone truly trustworthy."

8:44 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, replied:

8:48 "I will surely send with you a man who is trustworthy in the truest sense."

8:53 Thereupon the Companions of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, eagerly aspired to it.

8:58 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

9:01 "Stand, O Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah!"

9:05 When he stood, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said:

9:10 "This is the trustworthy man of this Ummah."

9:13 Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar stated in *al-Fath*:

9:15 "In this hadith is a manifest virtue of Abu Ubaydah ibn al-Jarrah, may Allah be pleased with him."

9:22 An Abridgment of the Prophetic Biography (Seerah).

9:28 Though the longing of mortals for one another may endure,

9:34 The yearning for you extends beyond all measure.

9:41 May the blessings of Allah be upon you whenever the call to prayer is raised,

9:47 And whenever lips move in everlasting remembrance.
