0:26 I was his close companion before his mission began.

0:30 I was among those who resembled him most in appearance.

0:34 However, when the Prophet, peace be upon him,

0:37 was sent with the message,

0:39 and called his people to Islam,

0:42 I hated him and showed him hostility.

0:45 I satirized him and his companions with my poetry.

0:48 When the Prophet, peace be upon him, migrated

0:51 to Medina,

0:53 I did not miss any of the battles

0:56 that Quraysh waged against the Muslims.

1:00 The Prophet, peace be upon him, was angry with me,

1:04 and ordered my execution.

1:06 I remained in Mecca until the Conquest took place.

1:11 I realized then that there was no escape for me but to embrace Islam,

1:15 and place my hand in the hand of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

1:20 So I went out to him before he reached Mecca with his army,

1:25 accompanied by my son and a man from our kin.

1:29 We met the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:32 at Thaniyat al-Iqab,

1:34 between Mecca and Medina.

1:37 We sought permission to enter upon him,

1:40 and Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, spoke to him on our behalf.

1:44 He, peace be upon him, said:

1:47 "I have no need of them."

1:50 When we learned of that,

1:52 I said:

1:53 "By Allah, the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, will either grant me permission,

1:58 or I will take my son by the hand,

2:01 and we will wander the earth

2:04 until we die of thirst or hunger."

2:07 When this reached the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

2:12 his heart softened toward us, and he granted us permission.

2:15 We entered upon him and embraced Islam.

2:18 From the very first moments of my Islam,

2:22 I set out to make up for the goodness I had missed.

2:25 I became a worshiper, a prostrator, and a warrior.

2:29 I went out with the Messenger, peace be upon him, in the Conquest of Mecca,

2:34 and the battles that followed.

2:37 On the day of Hunayn,

2:39 I was among those who stood firm with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

2:44 I was with him and did not leave his side for a moment.

2:47 I held the bridle of the Prophet’s mule with my left hand,

2:53 and wielded my sword against the throats of the polytheists with my right.

2:58 until the Muslims returned to the battlefield,

3:02 surrounding their Prophet, peace be upon him,

3:06 and Allah decreed for them a clear victory.

3:09 When the dust of battle settled,

3:13 the Messenger, peace be upon him, turned to me and said:

3:18 "Who is this, my brother?"

3:21 No sooner had I heard the word "my brother" from him, peace be upon him,

3:26 than my heart soared with joy.

3:30 I threw myself at his feet, kissing them.

3:34 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, praised me,

3:38 and testified that I would enter Paradise.

3:41 He gave me the glad tidings that I would be the master of the youth of the people of Paradise.
