0:30 I dedicated my poetry to the defense of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and Islam.

0:36 I participated in all the military expeditions.

0:39 Except for Badr.

0:40 For there was no firm command for us to go out.

0:43 And at Uhud.

0:45 I was the first to recognize the location of the Prophet, peace be upon him, after the rumor of his death spread.

0:51 So I brought the good news of his safety to the people.

0:53 And I fought fiercely in his defense.

0:57 Until I sustained seventeen wounds.

1:00 And I was on the verge of death.

1:04 I was one of the three who were left behind during the expedition of Tabuk.

1:08 Then Allah accepted their repentance.

1:10 My failure to join it was due to nothing but procrastination.

1:15 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had informed us of his intention to set out for Tabuk.

1:22 At that time, I was in a state of ease and possessed ample wealth.

1:26 So I said to myself:

1:27 "I will set out tomorrow and purchase my equipment."

1:30 Then I would enter my garden.

1:32 And I would become preoccupied with the pleasant fruits and the abundant shade.

1:36 Until the day would pass.

1:38 And I had not prepared anything for my equipment.

1:41 I continued to procrastinate in this manner.

1:44 Until the people set out.

1:46 I said:

1:47 "Tomorrow I will buy my equipment and then catch up with them."

1:50 But I did not cease in that behavior.

1:52 Until the army had moved far away.

1:55 When the Prophet, peace be upon him, returned to Medina.

1:59 The hypocrites came to him offering their excuses.

2:02 He accepted their excuses.

2:04 And entrusted their affairs to Allah the Exalted.

2:07 When I came to him.

2:09 He saw me and smiled the smile of one who is displeased.

2:13 And he said:

2:14 "What kept you behind?"

2:16 I said:

2:17 "By Allah, if I were sitting before anyone other than you.

2:20 I would have escaped his wrath with an excuse.

2:23 For I have been gifted with eloquence.

2:25 But I procrastinated, O Messenger of Allah.

2:28 Until I became entangled in the sin."

2:31 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

2:34 "As for this man, he has spoken the truth.

2:37 Rise until Allah decides your case."

2:40 So I rose.

2:42 Then the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

2:45 Forbade the people from speaking to me.

2:48 I would go out to the market.

2:50 And no one would speak to me.

2:52 The people acted as strangers toward me.

2:54 To the point that they were not the people I knew.

2:57 The earth, vast as it is, became constrained for me.

3:00 I would come to the mosque.

3:02 I would enter and pray in it.

3:04 And I would come to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

3:07 And greet him with peace.

3:09 I would look at his face and say to myself:

3:12 "Did he move his lips to return the greeting?"

3:15 One day.

3:18 While I was walking in the market.

3:21 A Christian came to me with a letter.

3:24 From the King of Ghassan.

3:26 It read: "To proceed.

3:29 It has reached me that your master.

3:32 Has treated you harshly and cast you aside.

3:34 You are not in a place of humiliation or neglect.

3:37 So come join us, and we will comfort you."

3:39 I said: "This too is a trial."

3:43 So I stoked the oven for it.

3:45 And burned it.

3:47 And I remained in this state.

3:49 For fifty nights.

3:51 Then Allah revealed.

3:53 His acceptance of my repentance.

3:55 I set out to the Prophet, peace be upon him.

3:58 And he was sitting in the mosque.

4:01 With the Muslims around him.

4:03 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to me:

4:06 "Rejoice at the best day that has come upon you."

4:09 I said: "O Prophet of Allah.

4:12 Is it part of my repentance that I shall not speak.

4:15 Except the truth?

4:17 And that I shall divest myself of all my wealth.

4:19 And give it as charity for the sake of Allah?"

4:21 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

4:24 "Keep some of your wealth for yourself.

4:27 It is better for you."

4:29 I said: "Then I shall keep my share.

4:32 The one in Khaybar."

4:35 I said one day to the Prophet, peace be upon him:

4:39 "O Messenger of Allah.

4:41 Allah has revealed what He has revealed regarding poets."

4:45 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

4:47 "The mujahid fights with his sword and his tongue.

4:51 By Him in whose hand is my soul.

4:53 It is as if you are striking them with arrows."

4:57 The tribe of Daws embraced Islam.

5:00 Out of fear of a verse I had composed:

5:03 "We have settled every doubt from Tihama.

5:06 And Khaybar, then we rested our swords.

5:09 We test them, and if they could speak.

5:12 Their blades would say: 'Daws or Thaqif'."

5:16 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said to me:

5:20 "Your Lord has not forgotten for you.

5:22 “We (angels) come not down save by commandment of thy Lord. Unto Him belongeth all that is before us and all that is behind us and all that is between those two, and thy Lord was never forgetful -” (19:64)

5:25 A verse you composed."

5:27 I said: "And what is it?"

5:29 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said:

5:32 "Recite it, O Abu Bakr."

5:34 So Abu Bakr said:

5:36 "Sukhayna claimed that she would overcome her Lord.

5:40 But no one who seeks to overcome can overcome the Overcomer."

5:44 So, who am I?
