0:16 I am one of the senior Companions of the Prophet, peace be upon him, from the Ansar, and I was among those closest to him.

0:26 I was a merchant known for my bravery and horsemanship since the days of the Jahiliyyah.

0:33 The Prophet, peace be upon him, appointed me as his deputy over Medina when he departed for the great Battle of Badr.

0:41 He then granted me a share of the reward and the spoils, and for this reason, I am counted among the veterans of Badr.

0:48 I witnessed all the subsequent battles alongside him.

0:54 After the Battle of the Trench concluded, the Prophet, peace be upon him, set out with three thousand Muslims toward the Banu Qurayza.

1:03 They were the ones who had broken their covenants and conspired with the confederates against the Muslims.

1:09 He laid siege to them, and after several days, they surrendered.

1:15 However, they wished to consult with one of the Muslims.

1:20 They sent word to the Prophet, peace be upon him, requesting that he send me to them for consultation.

1:28 I had been an ally of theirs before Islam, and my wealth and children were in their territory.

1:36 When they saw me, the men stood up, and they brought the women and children before me, weeping in my face.

1:45 I felt deep sorrow for them, and they asked me, "Do you think we should submit to the judgment of Muhammad?"

1:52 I said, "Yes," but I gestured with my hand toward my throat, signaling slaughter—meaning that you will be slaughtered.

2:02 I immediately realized that I had betrayed Allah and His Messenger, and I was horrified by what I had done.

2:09 I left them in haste and did not return to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

2:16 Instead, I went to the mosque, tied myself to one of its pillars, and swore that no one would untie me,

2:24 except for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, with his own hand.

2:28 When the news of my situation reached the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, he said, "Had he come to me, I would have sought forgiveness for him."

2:38 "But since he has done what he has done, I am not the one to release him from his place,"

2:44 "until Allah accepts his repentance."

2:47 I remained tied to the pillar for six nights.

2:50 My wife would come at every prayer time,

2:53 and she would untie my bonds for the prayer.

2:56 I would perform my ablution, then return and tie myself back to the pillar.

3:00 And so it continued.

3:01 Until one night, in the early hours of the morning, Umm Salamah, may Allah be pleased with her, heard

3:07 the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, laughing.

3:12 She asked, "What are you laughing at, O Messenger of Allah?"

3:16 He gave her the glad tidings that Allah had accepted my repentance.

3:19 Umm Salamah said, "Shall I not give him the good news, O Messenger of Allah?"

3:25 He replied, "Yes, if you wish."

3:28 So she stood at the door of her chamber, may Allah be pleased with her,

3:32 and said to me, "Rejoice, for Allah has accepted your repentance."

3:37 And Allah the Almighty revealed regarding me the verse:

3:40 "And [there are] others who have confessed their sins,"

3:44 "having mixed a righteous deed"

3:48 "with another that was evil."

3:50 “And (there are) others who have acknowledged their faults. They mixed a righteous action with another that was bad. It may be that Allah will relent toward them. Lo! Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.” (9:102)

3:54 "Indeed, Allah is Forgiving and Merciful."

3:59 The people rushed to untie me,

4:04 but I said, "No, by Allah,"

4:06 "until the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,"

4:10 "is the one who unties me with his own hand."

4:13 When the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, passed by me,

4:17 while he was going out for the dawn prayer,

4:20 he undid my bonds and released me.

4:23 This pillar remains known in the Prophet’s Mosque to this day.

4:30 It bears my name, serving as a witness to the sincerity of my repentance.
