0:16 I am one of the Companions from the Ansar and one of the leaders present on the night of al-'Aqabah.

0:26 I embraced Islam because of a woman.

0:29 I had proposed to Umm Sulaym after the death of her husband.

0:34 She said, "A man like you cannot be turned away."

0:38 "But you are a disbeliever."

0:41 "If you embrace Islam, I will be pleased to have you as a husband."

0:44 "I will make your Islam my dowry."

0:47 So I embraced Islam, and then I married her.

0:51 The Muslims used to say,

0:54 "We have never heard of a dowry,"

0:56 "more noble than the dowry of Umm Sulaym."

0:59 For she made her dowry the acceptance of Islam.

1:02 Then, one day,

1:05 a son of ours fell ill.

1:07 I went out to attend to some of my needs,

1:09 and the boy passed away.

1:11 When I returned,

1:13 I asked, "What has become of the boy?"

1:15 My wife, Umm Sulaym, replied,

1:18 "He is quieter than he was before."

1:21 She then brought me my dinner,

1:23 and I ate.

1:25 Then I was intimate with her.

1:27 When I had finished,

1:29 she asked, "What do you think of a family,"

1:32 "who were lent something,"

1:35 "by another family?"

1:37 "When the owners asked for their loan back,"

1:39 "they refused to return it."

1:41 I said, "That is not right for them to do."

1:44 She said, "Well, your son,"

1:47 "was a loan from Allah the Exalted."

1:50 "He let you enjoy him for as long as He willed,"

1:53 "and He took him back when He willed."

1:55 This weighed heavily upon my soul.

1:58 When morning came,

2:00 I went to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:03 and informed him of what my wife, Umm Sulaym, had done.

2:07 The Prophet, peace be upon him, said,

2:10 "Did you consummate your marriage last night?"

2:12 I said, "Yes."

2:14 He said, "May Allah,"

2:16 "bless you both,"

2:18 "in your night."

2:20 Allah then blessed me with nine children,

2:23 all of whom had memorized the Qur'an.

2:26 One day, I said to Umm Sulaym,

2:30 "I heard the voice of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, sounding weak,"

2:35 "and I could detect hunger in it."

2:38 "Do you have anything?"

2:40 She said, "Yes."

2:42 She brought out some barley loaves,

2:45 and prepared some bread.

2:47 Then I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

2:51 and found him in the mosque with people around him.

2:55 I said to him, "O Messenger of Allah,"

2:58 "I have prepared some food for you."

3:00 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, said to those with him,

3:05 "Rise."

3:06 He set off, and I walked ahead of them,

3:09 until I reached Umm Sulaym.

3:12 I said to her,

3:13 "The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, and the people have come,"

3:18 "and we do not have enough to feed them all."

3:21 She said,

3:22 "Allah and His Messenger know best."

3:25 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, arrived,

3:29 and said,

3:31 "Bring what you have, Umm Sulaym."

3:34 She brought him that bread.

3:37 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, prayed over it.

3:41 Then he said to me,

3:45 "Give permission for ten men to enter."

3:48 I gave them permission.

3:50 They ate until they were full and then left.

3:54 Then he said,

3:55 "Give permission for ten more."

3:58 I gave them permission.

4:00 They ate until they were full and then left.

4:03 And so it continued,

4:05 until all the people had eaten.

4:08 The group consisted of seventy or eighty men.

4:12 After the passing of the Messenger, peace be upon him,

4:17 I fasted continuously for over twenty years.

4:21 I would only break my fast on the days of Eid or in times of illness,

4:26 until my time came.

4:29 So, who am I?

4:51 They followed the Messenger wherever he led or spoke.

4:56 They were here, watering our lives like rain.

5:01 Their memory lives on within us, exalted.

5:16 They filled life with pride through their deeds,

5:21 and the world of the people flourished because of them.
