0:26 My brother, Unays, was killed on the day of Badr while he was a disbeliever.

0:29 At that time, I was still a young boy.

0:32 I embraced Islam on the day of the conquest of Makkah.

0:35 I was sixteen years old.

0:37 I was among those with the most resonant and pleasant voices.

0:41 The Prophet, peace be upon him, commanded me.

0:44 To perform the call to prayer (adhan) in Makkah.

0:47 I was the first muezzin of the Sacred Mosque (Masjid al-Haram).

0:51 I remained so until my death.

0:53 The adhan remained with my children and my children’s children.

0:56 For many years.

0:58 I went out with a group from the Quraysh after the conquest of Makkah.

1:03 When we were on the road,

1:06 We caught sight of the Muslim army.

1:08 They were returning from Hunayn.

1:11 We heard the voice of the muezzin of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

1:16 Calling to prayer.

1:18 We stood there mocking them.

1:20 I began to call out in a loud voice, ridiculing their muezzin.

1:25 The Muslims heard my voice.

1:28 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, ordered,

1:31 That we be brought to him.

1:33 We were brought and stood before him.

1:37 He asked, "Which of you is the one whose voice I heard raised in the adhan?"

1:43 The group all pointed to me.

1:46 And they spoke the truth.

1:47 He let them all go but kept me detained.

1:50 I feared for my life.

1:53 He said to me, "Stand and call the adhan for prayer."

1:57 I stood before him.

1:59 There was nothing more hateful to me than the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him,

2:04 Nor anything he commanded me to do.

2:07 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, dictated the adhan to me himself.

2:12 He taught it to me phrase by phrase.

2:16 Then, when I finished the adhan, he called me.

2:19 He gave me a pouch containing some silver.

2:23 Then he placed his hand on my forehead.

2:26 Then he passed it over my face.

2:28 Then over my chest.

2:30 Until the hand of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, reached my navel.

2:35 Then he said,

2:37 "May Allah bless you and shower His blessings upon you."

2:41 Every bit of hatred I had for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, left my heart.

2:48 And it was all replaced by love for the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

2:54 I said, "O Messenger of Allah,

2:57 Command me to perform the adhan in Makkah."

3:00 He replied, "I have already done so."

3:02 So I went to 'Attab Ibn Asid, may Allah be pleased with him,

3:06 Who was the governor of Makkah.

3:08 I informed him of my affair with the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him.

3:13 He responded accordingly.

3:15 From that moment on, I became the muezzin of the Sacred Mosque.

3:19 Until I passed away.

3:22 I did not migrate to Madinah,

3:24 Because of my commitment to the adhan in the Sacred House of Allah.

3:28 I never shaved the hair on my forehead,

3:32 Because the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, had wiped his hand over it.

3:39 The Commander of the Faithful, 'Umar Ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, came to Makkah.

3:44 When the time for prayer arrived,

3:46 I stood and performed the adhan.

3:48 When 'Umar heard my adhan,

3:51 He summoned me and said,

3:53 "How resonant your voice is!

3:55 Do you not fear that your veins might burst from the intensity of your voice?"

4:00 I said, "O Commander of the Faithful,

4:03 You have come to us,

4:05 And I wanted you to hear my voice."
