0:16 I am one of the Companions, among the first of the Emigrants.

0:24 I embraced Islam along with my parents, and we migrated to Medina.

0:28 I was known for my strength, intensity, and prowess.

0:32 I possessed a powerful physique combined with agility.

0:36 Because of this, I used to undertake a dangerous mission.

0:40 It was the task of transporting Muslim captives and the vulnerable.

0:44 From Mecca to Medina in secret.

0:47 On one occasion,

0:49 I promised a man among the Muslim captives in Mecca

0:53 that I would carry him to Medina.

0:55 I arrived and reached the shade of a wall in Mecca.

1:00 It was a moonlit night.

1:02 A woman from the prostitutes of Mecca caught sight of me.

1:05 She was called 'Anaq.

1:09 This 'Anaq had been a friend of mine during the Pre-Islamic era.

1:13 She recognized me and invited me to spend the night with her.

1:18 I refused and said to her,

1:21 "O 'Anaq, Allah, the Almighty,

1:25 has forbidden adultery."

1:27 'Anaq became angry with me,

1:29 and she cried out at the top of her voice.

1:32 Her voice echoed throughout the place.

1:34 She said,

1:36 "O people of Mecca!

1:38 This is the man who carries your captives away!"

1:41 The people were alerted,

1:43 and eight of them pursued me.

1:46 I fled until I entered a cave in a mountain.

1:50 The men came searching for me,

1:53 until they stood right above me at the entrance of the cave.

1:57 But Allah blinded their sight from seeing me.

2:00 So they turned back.

2:03 After two nights, I returned to my companion.

2:07 I carried him, and he was a heavy man.

2:10 I removed his shackles,

2:13 and we traveled until we reached Medina.

2:16 I came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him,

2:20 and I mentioned to him what had happened to me.

2:23 Then I said,

2:25 "O Messenger of Allah,

2:27 may I marry 'Anaq?"

2:29 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, remained silent,

2:32 and did not answer me at all,

2:35 until this verse was revealed:

2:38 “The adulterer shall not marry save an adulteress or an idolatress, and the adulteress none shall marry save an adulterer or an idolater. All that is forbidden unto believers.” (24:3)

2:44 The Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, recited it to me,

2:48 and said,

2:50 "Do not marry her."

2:52 So I turned away from her.

2:54 In the third year of the Hijra,

2:58 I went out on a military expedition to scout the news of the polytheists.

3:03 We were mentioned to a tribe from Hudhayl,

3:06 known as Banu Lihyan.

3:08 They followed us with nearly a hundred archers and a hundred foot soldiers,

3:13 until they caught up with us and surrounded us.

3:16 They said,

3:18 "You have our pledge and covenant that if you descend to us,

3:22 we will not kill a single man among you."

3:25 Three of us surrendered,

3:27 but as for me and the rest, we said,

3:30 "As for us, we will not descend under the protection of a disbeliever."

3:35 We fought them until we were killed,

3:38 in an event known as the Day of al-Raji'.
