0:38 The reason for my conversion was that a group from the tribe of Banu Malik decided to visit the Muqawqis, the King of Egypt.

0:46 They intended to present him with gifts to receive some wealth in return.

0:51 I decided to join them, hoping to gain something from him myself.

0:57 I traveled with them until we reached him.

1:01 He looked at the leader of the Banu Malik group, brought him close, sat him beside him, and asked him questions.

1:09 He asked, "Are you all from Banu Malik?" He replied, "Yes, except for one man," and pointed to me.

1:17 I was the least significant of the group to him, yet he was pleased with their gifts and gave them rewards.

1:24 He gave me only a trivial amount, not worth mentioning, and we left his presence.

1:30 My companions went to the market to buy gifts for their families, and none of them offered to help me.

1:40 They left with wine and began drinking, so I resolved to kill them.

1:48 I feigned illness, wrapped my head, and said, "I have no need for drink, but I will serve you."

1:57 They did not suspect anything, so I began serving them, filling their cups one after another.

2:04 They drank without realizing until they fell asleep, intoxicated.

2:09 I pounced on them and killed them all.

2:13 There were thirteen men, and I took what they had with them.

2:18 I could not return to my people after what I had done.

2:22 So I came to the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, in Medina.

2:27 I found him sitting in the mosque with his Companions.

2:31 I greeted him and informed him of what I had done.

2:35 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

2:39 "As for your Islam, we accept it."

2:42 "But we will not take any of their wealth."

2:45 "For this was treachery, and there is no good in treachery."

2:50 I was devastated and said:

2:53 "I only killed them while I was still following the religion of my people."

2:57 "I have only just embraced Islam."

3:00 The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:

3:03 "Indeed, Islam wipes away what came before it."

3:07 My uncle, 'Urwah ibn Mas'ud, paid:

3:11 The blood money for those people.

3:15 I was one of the most cunning of the Arabs.

3:17 And I never fell into a situation:

3:19 But that I found a way out of it.

3:22 Among these instances is when 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him:

3:26 Appointed me as governor of Bahrain.

3:28 The people there disliked me, so 'Umar dismissed me.

3:31 They feared he would send me back to them.

3:34 So their leader from the Ansar said:

3:37 "If you do what I command you:"

3:40 "He will not send him back to us."

3:43 They said, "We will do it."

3:45 "What do you command us?"

3:47 He said, "Collect one hundred thousand dirhams."

3:50 "So that I may take it to 'Umar."

3:53 "And say to him:"

3:55 "The governor you appointed over us:"

3:58 "Betrayed the trust."

4:00 "And paid me this amount from the public treasury."

4:04 They collected one hundred thousand for him.

4:06 He came to 'Umar.

4:08 And told him that.

4:10 'Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, summoned me.

4:13 And asked me.

4:14 I said:

4:16 "You lie, by Allah, O Commander of the Faithful!"

4:19 "It was actually two hundred thousand."

4:22 He asked:

4:23 "What drove you to do this?"

4:26 I said:

4:27 "Family obligations and need."

4:29 "And now:"

4:30 "Let them return it to the public treasury."

4:33 'Umar then said to the man:

4:35 "What do you say?"

4:37 He said:

4:38 "No."

4:39 "By Allah, I will tell you the truth."

4:41 "By Allah, he did not pay me a little or a lot."

4:45 "It was merely a ruse."

4:47 "So that he would not return to us."

4:50 'Umar looked at me and said:

4:53 "What did you intend by this action of yours?"

4:56 I said:

4:57 "The wicked man lied about me."

4:59 "So I wanted to disgrace him."
